Peace and Freedom in the Midst of Crisis

By | Total Wellness | One Comment

When we lost our baby we had no insurance. YIKES. I know my mom is going to freak out. It was just a choice we made at that time due to risk ratio and what the insurance would cover with my midwife. I do believe in insurance. I recommend people have it.

But did you know that hospitals, laboratories, and doctors give discounts for immediate payments? That’s right. Because we paid at time of service for our diagnostic testing, doctor’s fees, and hospital visits we saved almost $10,000 compared to what the insurance bill would have been.

If I had insurance to cover the visits and only had to pay the insurance fee, co-pays and deductibles I still would have saved almost $3000 because I could pay immediately.

What’s my point?

We are unique because we had the money to cover our medical expenses. What about you? What would a bill for $7000 do to your family’s household budget, savings, or debt load?

We are unique because we have freedom. We have freedom to grieve, heal and rest more than a month without losing income, using up vacation days, having to cut our lifestyle.

What would happen to your savings, your family’s lifestyle, your vacation days if you had to take 3 weeks of time off? What about 3 months?

Don’t get me wrong. My family still has debt we are working on, we don’t live in a beautiful mansion, and we actually only have one car we lease. I am not at a place I would call perfection but I am at a place I can call PEACEFUL.

A place where my husband could leave a very stressful job that was killing him. A place where we can hire a home helper to assist us with the kids, errands, cleaning, cooking etc. A place where we can pack up and move near our family living where we want to live and not where a job tells us we have to be.

I am here to tell you that you can have that PEACE & FREEDOM too. My heart hurts for the people who don’t have the resources and support and go through what Jay and I have gone through four times losing our babies. Each time it gets worse on our hearts but each time we are at a better and better place to deal with the loss. That is from creating more and more FREEDOM in our lives.

The freedom we have in our life wasn’t FREE. In fact for the first 10 years we learned, grew, failed, and worked to so hard we burned out many times. Then we got smarter utilized what we learned and have worked the past 5 years without so much burn out. We still must work, but we have and continue to learn how to work SMART.

Tell me where do you want to be the next time tragedy hits your family. In a place where you are just getting by or do you want to be FREE…

If your answer is YES and if you are serious about learning more about our journey and if it is the right thing for you, call our office at 1888-351-6850 or email us at info@starrhealth.com.

I don’t know if what our family did to create FREEDOM in our lives is right for you. What I do know is we have helped hundreds of people live a better lives and if we can help you we will.

That is our commitment. Helping Families live Better Lives. God Bless you.

5 Ways Grieving Affects the Whole Family

5 Ways Grieving Affects the Whole Family

When a family has a loss of a baby, the whole family grieves. You would think it would be just the mom and maybe the dad, but really it’s the whole family. Maybe your family has been through difficult times. Divorce, death of a loved one, a move away from loved ones, loss of a job and downgrade of your lifestyle. I guess all these things could cause grief for family members.

Here are my observations and my opinions of what may transpire due to the loss:

1. Illness – I watched my good friend and neighbor Debbie lose several loved ones in a row followed by our move to Florida. She had a constant cold and illness for more than 9 months.

Immune System: Grief weakens the immune system. Stress associated with months of turmoil before or after a loss causes our cortisol “stress hormone” to pump out. The adrenal glands that pump out the stress hormone called cortisol can literally burn out… which can leave us with an even bigger problem of chronic fatigue.

Recognize that your family members may start to get sick weeks or months after the loss. If you see repetitive illness, you may want to focus on building the immune system of the entire family.

2. Lack of Energy –  “I walk around the block and I need to come in and take a nap.” “I barely can get through the day without falling asleep.” “I need stimulants like coffee, soda, or energy drinks to do my job.”

Do these things sound familiar?

Some people need these things regardless. But after a loss we can become more and more dependent on “energy aides”. The burning out of the adrenal glands is many times a culprit. And this is much more common in our population than you think. This can also result in one good day of energy and doing things followed by a bad day.

For me I found myself having a good day of energy where I cared for the kids, decorated for Christmas, and took a short walk. The following day I found myself so exhausted I literally had to sleep for 4 hours in the middle of the day.

Adrenal exhaustion will put you on a roller coaster until you get on track for healing it. To learn more about Adrenal Exhaustion and if you have it, visit this page.

3. Fogginess – After the loss, your body and brain may be in a state of shock for weeks or months afterwards. You may forget names, appointments, where you left things and the common “what was I looking for” when you enter a room. Concentration is difficult. I have ruined several meals trying to cook, wasted expensive supplements by accidentally flushing them down the drain, put my clothing on wrong and the list goes on.

How about you? Have you just chalked your “mistakes” up to age, carelessness, or disorganization? What really may be going on is your body’s healing and grieving process.

4. Appetite – This can seem to go either way for loss. In many cases initially there is a loss of appetite. Weight loss is common when grieving but so is weight gain. We comfort ourselves with foods we love or crave. Our eating patterns can become irregular going all day without food and then bingeing on a dozen cookies or a cake at night. The problem with poor eating patterns is this can contribute to adrenal fatigue even more. YIKES… and that can lead to a poorer immune system.

So eating healthy at least eventually after a loss will be important for your healing. But I will admit as soon as we left the hospital I made my husband get me a large peppermint ice cream chocolate dipped cone. Sometimes you need the comfort. But if you do it daily, you will wreck your health and put on the pounds, no matter if that’s all you eat all day.

5. Behavior – Each person may react differently based on the kind of trauma or loss they had. For women who lose babies, we deal with a huge hormone shift which many times can result in Post Partum Depression. This can result in anxiety, moodiness, depression and the list goes on. For me I recognize it through lack of patience with my children, husband or employees. The roller coaster of despair, crying, anxiety, and even happiness.

When you have illness involved with your grief, you will have even more lack of patience. When I heard about a sick single mom swearing at her kids after a great loss, I had more pity on her then disgust. It’s really hard to get through the day without yelling when you have small children and your body is hurting and your heart is hurting. I can’t imagine doing it without support.

Our family members… acute or chronic illness can affect our family members in a variety of ways. Young children may exhibit behavior to get attention, or outbursts, nightmares, bed wetting, withdrawals, anxieties, fears and so on. Teenage children may show similar characteristics but they may also seek attention in others outside the family who may not be the best influence. Alcohol and drugs, sexual attention, bad influences, and even cutting are behaviors that may be seeded from trauma.

Sadly a year ago we lost a baby early on in my pregnancy. I thought I was really the only one affected but looking back I can see it with new eyes. A year ago my husband a strong man who allows me to grieve first it seems, then when I am better you see it affect him. We lost our baby in February and by April he had gained 15 more pounds, had been struggling with repetitive colds, and lack of patience. My son was acting out, refused to work with his new therapist, and pooped his pants almost daily.

This year I see my husband still trying to be strong but his immune system has crashed and he has been sick for weeks. My son has broken out in terrible eczema and sores on his face, he has been bed wetting, and today I got a report that he is not obeying and even hitting in his gym class. At first I was really upset and worried but then I looked beyond it and realized what was really going on with him. I wrote to the gym and coaches and let them know what was going on with our family, asked for some grace and came up with a few solutions to help with his behavior next time.

A new awareness gives me some hope during this difficult time and I hope it does to you too. I hope this article can give you some ideas and things to look for when dealing with loss. As I go through more of the healing process myself, I will share things that helped our family and our health.

God Bless you and your family,

Losing Gabe and Matters of the Heart

By | Total Wellness | 8 Comments

I know many of you have been praying for my family and I since I put out the prayer request early last Wednesday morning on Facebook. We are grateful for your prayers. They gave us and continue to give us a huge peace through all this.

For those of you who haven’t heard, we lost our un-born baby Gabrielle Daniel Carter. After a routine ultrasound where we hoped to find out the baby’s sex we were informed that the baby was only 16 1/2 weeks in growth not 20 weeks. Later that day our midwife called to inform us the baby had no heartbeat. After another ultrasound and a consultation with an OB we were admitted to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast.

I was induced on Tuesday December 2nd at 7pm. I peacefully passed the baby a little after 3am by myself, then the doctor came and helped to deliver the placenta. The doctor and nurses were quite surprised that I delivered so quickly and without the use of additional doses of inducement drugs, pain killers, or an epidural. They don’t understand the power of prayers and God’s medicine – essential oils… we do and we used them.

We were able to hold our son. We named him Gabriel Daniel a name that God gave me with several signs in the last couple of weeks. Several weeks ago my mother called and told me she had a dream that her grandmother Mary, (my name sake who passed several weeks before I was born) was holding a baby boy. At the time we thought it was a sign she was holding him until he was born but now looking back we believe it was when he passed. By his size and measurements Gabe had passed several weeks ago. From his appearance Gabe was not developing normally and this was most likely determined at conception. We believe God took Gabe early to spare him and us further pain.

I got to anoint Gabe with Frankincense and speak “heaven talk” over him before we had to leave him. It was the most beautiful and special thing. We know without a doubt where our son is. We know without a doubt that your prayers have and continue to have a wall of protection over us.

They allowed us to leave the hospital Wednesday but I was on bed rest. We choose to stay on the Emerald Coast and got a beautiful room on the ocean. Although I couldn’t put my feet in the sand, it was still beautiful to look outside and see it.

BeachWater

We have lost 3 other babies back to Heaven before they were born. The process is difficult. With Gabe it has been most difficult in many ways. If you have had early miscarriages you know the first Trimester is full of worry. Once you make it past the first 12 weeks you feel lighter, happier, worry less and start making plans for your new loved one.

Each person’s process of loss is different. For me I feel numb for a while, then grief comes later. But I am blessed to have an awareness of why God took our baby. My faith does not waiver because Jesus is my Savior and some day I will be in heaven with all my babies.

A week after our loss, my heart and body started to grieve. And then my Immune System started to shut down. I came to a realization that I can not just go back to my regular life with just a little bit of rest everyday. I need time to heal. My husband is a strong man and grieves differently from me as well. Unfortunately he had been sick for almost 3 weeks with a cold that turned into pneumonia before we got our bad news. Afterwards his coughing caused his back to go out which left him in terrible physical pain too. I realized I needed to call in Reinforcements Spiritually and Physically. I am blessed to have a network of support around me who I can ask for help.

I ask for your continued support and prayers as our family heals. During the rest of the month of December and maybe into January we will be taking time off for healing physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Our assistant will be putting up some posts as me in groups and on my page. Please note she will read any message you send in chat, email or direct message, answer those she can and share with me what is necessary. Her direct email is lori@starrhealth.com if you have anything that needs attention.

Thank you again for your support, understanding and prayers,

Some Days Are Harder Than Others

By | Total Wellness | One Comment

Some days are just harder than others.  We all have had those difficult days, weeks, months or even years. But many of us have a spouse or loved one who helps carry us through those tough times. Recently I had a tough day and my husband was sick so he couldn’t give me moral support or help. That night as I was struggling to get my kids ready for bed I thought how hard it must be to parent alone.

According to the US Census Bureau in 2013 of 17 million single parent families, 80% are single moms. 1 and 4 kids under 18 won’t grow up with their biological dad.  Single moms struggle financially with more than 50% living in poverty and many close to it. Not only are there financial burdens of raising kids, but I don’t think we can even imagine the stress of a raising kids on our own. Every diaper is yours, every bath time, teeth brushing, laundry doing, grocery shopping, homework checking, and so on. And not to mention cooking and cleaning.

Where I live there are many moms who aren’t single but have husbands that are deployed out of the country. They become single moms again. And then there are moms whose husbands work out of town for most of the week, or do contract work out of state.

Why do I bring all of this up? Before the holidays hit I just want us to think about someone we know or know of that does parenting mostly by themselves. Could they use some help? You may not have the financial means to help them, but could you help in other ways? If they are self employed could you refer some business to them, could you offer to clean their house, do they need someone to do some shopping for them?

This time of year also comes with a lot of charitable donations. It can be sometimes annoying with the constant clanging bells, but remember Christmas is just the beginning of a season that can be very dark and difficult for single parents. Higher utility bills, cost of holidays, babysitters etc. can really overwhelm a single parent.  Giving to a charity that helps the poor will probably help a single parent too.  Taking $25 out of your Christmas budget or maybe even $250 to let someone else enjoy the holiday may be the true sense of Christmas.

In the Bible, God commands us to take care of the orphans and widows, in today’s day and age I believe the same command can go for single parents.  Reach out and give a single parent a hand.

God will give you a thumbs up for it and you may never know how much that parent may need your help.

God Bless,

Looking Back

November 15, 2014 marks one year since we said goodbye to our Central NY home and moved ourselves down to the Panhandle of Florida. I remember that day so vividly. I woke up before anyone else and was downstairs feeding Sarah when a small knock came at the door. It was my neighbor Kip who wanted to say goodbye just one more time before she left for work. She had me in tears before she left with the realization this was it… we were really leaving my hometown of 39 years.

I cooked oatmeal for breakfast and we rushed to pack what was left of our house in our Sienna Toyota van. We had already packed up a moving pod, which had left 5 days earlier. Our whole life downsized to a little POD and our van. It was a good thing we had negotiated with the new owners and they kept all our big stuff, which meant less moving expenses and a fresh new start.

We finally packed up the van with minutes until the new owners would arrive. I left my favorite stainless steel pot behind with oatmeal still in it. Bummer. Next we would say goodbye to Joshie’s best buddy and his dearest sitter since birth Miss Debbie and her granddaughter McKenna. That was really hard. Ironically it had been just 11 months prior that we told Miss Debbie that we would most likely be moving out of NY in a couple of years but never thought it would be this soon.

This was a difficult parting as in just 3 ½ years we had changed each other’s lives forever. We introduced her to a new career at 55 and she with more than 40 years experience in childcare taught us about loving and caring for our newborn, infants, and then toddler.

Right around September 13th 2013, my husband got a strong call from God about selling our home to our friends and us moving down with his mom. Ironically again his mom and stepdad had purchased a neighboring house and cottage that they had been fixing up for family like us to come visit in the winter. Everything was lining up.

On October 24th, my baby and I made a trip down to assess our new living arrangements, do some interviews, and try to get a grasp on what our new life would be like. Baby Sarah and I had a good time.

So on November 15th we started down the east coast to our new home. Stopping along the way to see my sister in Virginia, my chiropractic buddy in South Carolina, and my God child and BFF in Atlanta.

Finally we made it to Florida. Initially we stayed with my in laws for about 5 days until the house was ready. That first night I was scared, the second night I was scared, and that continued for about 6 weeks. See, I went from mostly citified to now living in a house in the woods. I couldn’t walk outdoors at night by myself. IT WAS DARK and frogs and creatures were on the ground. But eventually I grew less fearful.

Don’t get me wrong. I am still not comfortable being outdoors, but it may have something to do with all the WARNINGS I was given about the outdoors in Florida.

I know one of the reasons God brought us back to Florida was to bless us and maybe we would be of service to others here. But mostly He brought Blessings in the form of our in laws. Two amazing individuals who do so much for us. Hard working, God loving, doers and givers and we have been so blessed by them.

Christmas came and it was an awesome holiday spent with my husband’s brothers and sisters. The first of the year brought some challenges as we lost a baby to miscarriage but I got away for my first mommy retreat in March- just God and I and it was the most healing time.

In March my marvelous Mommy Helper, Christie moved to Florida too as God also called her to make a change. She has been the best thing for our family and I think this move has been a blessing on her life too.

christiocean

In April my kids turned 1 and 4 and we got to travel to visit my snowbird parents and grandparents in their Florida winter homes near Sun City. It was great to see them so happy and get to spend time with them. For half the year, my parents are just 6 hours away.

Something happened after my son’s birthday. He changed, matured, and finally got fully POTTY TRAINED…  months of cleaning up the most disgusting messes you can imagine, all changed when he turned 4… along with a promise we would go to see Mickey Mouse when he started “pooping on the potty”. But not only that, it was like a light bulb went off and my mostly non-verbal son just started talking all the time. In fact every few weeks now he grows in leaps and bounds.

In May I started partnering with two local businesses Hello Beautiful and Body B Healthy to help grow a Young Living Essential Oils presence and Trained Raindrop Therapist in our area. It has been a lot of work but I have met some great people and made some new friends.

June was my first trip back to NY unfortunately for my aunt’s funeral. It was a sad time but seeing family and friends was a blessing. The end of June, July, August, and September were pretty intense working months. But a beautiful trip to France revealed a new baby was going to join our family in April. WOW baby #3 was on their way.

September 15th was my husband’s last day working for Corporate America. He made the decision not just based on the growth of our Young Living business but because his job was literally killing him. I am proud of him as he continues to get healthier, happier, and focus on what he wants in life. And I am super happy he will be managing and growing our Young Living business too.

10599253_10204458751970448_9209627635777294562_n (1)

The beginning of October I spent a week working in NY. It was really nice. I feel like when I see my friends again we don’t get a lot of time together but rather it’s quality time.  And in fact several of them have come down to visit us in FL or we see each other at events.

October was our first vacation as a family that we hadn’t felt the stress of my husband’s job. No phone calls in the middle of the night, no interruptions, no working while we were supposed to be relaxing and no end of vacation blues because this is our life now.  This is our LIFE NOW… THIS IS OUR LIFE NOW…  seems weird to say.

As I write this, I can hear training bombs going off at a 60 mile away or so Army or Airforce Training Facility. We live in the midst of a several Armed Service Stations…  there are many military in my town and surrounding towns. I have met many wives and moms whose husbands are deployed for months at a time. I have to wonder if God brought me here to help some of them…  or maybe to train some Young Living Distributors who may help make their lives brighter. I think that may be part of my role here.

The transition to life in Florida hasn’t been easy but I know it’s good. I have become a better parent learning to love and care for my children at an even deeper level. I have learned how to face my fears …  particularly snakes….  (you just scream and run). I have learned to manage a household and a business better, I have learned that wherever you go there are people you can help, serve and love.

I will always love you NY but Florida is now my home. So I guess I need to learn the Florida state’s song LOL!

Your Dream Vacation

By | Total Wellness | One Comment

TampaBeach

What does the vacation of your dreams look like?

Is it a Cross Country Trip with the family in a beautiful giant RV?

Is it a trip to France seeing everything from the French Riviera to Paris?

Is it a backpacking trip across Europe?

Is it seeing your grandkids halfway across the continent?

Is it a “girlfriends” all inclusive vacation to Aruba or to your favorite Island?

Is it taking your kids and family members to Disney World for a week?

Is it traveling to a luxurious resort surrounded by beautiful scenery getting massages, saunas, healthy foods and fitness all week?

Is it a getaway cruise for you and your Sweetie?

Or maybe it is a just a serene stay at the beach where you can soak up the sun and have some solitude?

Any of these sound awesome to you?

Well I am here to tell you all your dream vacations are possible.

I am about to show you how a dream vacation doesn’t have to take 10 years to save the money and do.

And lastly I am about to show you how taking a dream vacation could even be a tax write off.

Sound crazy? It’s not. In fact I have been traveling and having fun for the past 14 years all because of a home business I started this month 15 years ago.

Let me be clear. I started a Network Marketing Home Business in November 1999.

A Network Marketing Business has a parent company like my company Young Living Essential Oils who researches, sources (or grows in our case), produces or manufactures the product, and distributes the product to the customers or distributors. In addition, the parent company pays its distributors commission on their sales volumes and the sales volume of the team of distributors they personally have enrolled and worked with.

Does that sound complicated? It’s not really. You fall in love with a product made by a reputable company. You start sharing this product with people you love. You make the decision to do it as a business. You get training to learn how to do it as a business and over time of consistently working, you get results.

Results equate to a residual income. A residual income means getting paid month after month from your consistent part time efforts. And for the majority of us who continue to learn and grow personally and professionally, that income goes up and up.

So how does your dream vacation come in to this picture? When you have a home business, you have the ability to travel and teach others. This at first may be just locally, but even in my early stages of business I made sure that I shared with friends and family. This allowed me to set up meetings and short vacations when visiting them. My sister lived 7 hours away. My home business gave me the opportunity to see her several times a year. She loved the product too, became a customer and we would do meetings in her house.

My mother in law fell in love with the products and started sharing too. We were able to visit a couple times a year. Over time as our business grew, we were able to take trips all over the world on cruises, spa trips, vacations to Disney, Sea World, time at the beach, and most recently France. We coupled these trips with meetings we planned ahead of time so we were able to write the majority of these vacations off. (Of course it’s important to consult a tax accountant and the IRS laws to understand how to best organize your trips).

So what is my point to all this? If you are serious about your dreams and dream vacations, you can use a home business to help you achieve those dreams. It will still involve work, time and money but what you will be creating is a residual income and the ability of creating many beautiful memories.

Let me know what your dream vacations look like. Come over to my Facebook page and share.

Here are a few pictures of some fun we recently had on our “Work Vacation”.

Care for the Caregiver

By | Total Wellness | No Comments

These past weeks have been full of some serious and sad news for my family and friends. As one ages, we become more and more aware of how precious life is. There are no guarantees how much time we have with loved ones.

But in the reality of aging we must be aware of another important topic that effects couples, children, and loved ones. It is the topic of CARE for the CAREGIVER.

Love is an amazing and wonderful thing but sometimes it can blind us. What do I mean?

Have you ever had a friend who is a born caretaker? Meaning they get “great job” from helping others. They thrive on it and will go ABOVE and BEYOND to help their family, friends and almost anyone. The problem is in doing so sometimes they become off balance and GIVE and GIVE and GIVE all that they have emotionally, physically, and even sometimes financially. After years of this process they start to realize that they have hurt their own health and happiness.

When we are a Caregiver of a loved one and when they are dealing with a significant health crisis the same can happen. We do and do and do and forget to take care of ourselves.

I once had a patient who had Type II Diabetes. Although she was a good eater and mostly healthy, I dug deeper into her story. For more than 5 years she was the sole caretaker of her elderly parents who were very ill. It was extremely demanding to her emotionally and physically. After they passed she was not only emotionally grieving but she was physically ailing. Shortly after they passed she was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Coincidence I think not.

When our loved ones are hurting, we hurt. In our hurt we will turn to things that help dull that pain. We will stuff ourselves with food, have our nightly wine or drinks, smoke marijuana, do retail therapy or other unhealthy choices that help dull our pain and exhaustion. In doing so we deteriorate our health which ends up leaving less of us to help others.

So what is my point in sharing this information? First we must make it a priority to take CARE of ourselves. Whether we are ailing for loved ones or just a parent with kids to care for.

Here are some good places to start:

1. Exercise and Movement:
I would almost guarantee that every person reading this has access to move their bodies for 15 minutes or more a day if they would make time for it. I would also guarantee there are opportunities to get outdoors and walk, get to the gym down the street, meet a friend for some fitness fun, or simply uncover that treadmill sitting in your bedroom.

If you set yourself a simple goal of 15 minutes a day of continuous movement I bet you could achieve it. Some of my Hurting Harriets friends really need to consider some Aqua Therapy to alleviate pressure off of joints and sitting classes that most YMCA’s offer.

“But I can’t afford the membership fees”. I want to stop hearing that excuse. I guarantee if I looked at your budget I could find monies spent on clothes, gifts, and other non-essentials. If your budget really doesn’t allow for that then look into the YMCA or local gym memberships. And I may need to talk to you about good debt and bad debt. Debt isn’t something I think is good unless it is an investment in something that will cause you to physically or mentally improve so that you can do better and perform better.

2. Planned Healthy Meals and Snacks:
This is a huge topic for most caretakers or those living with just one other person in the family. Many times we rely on frozen meals, eating out, or skipping meals. Not a good plan for the caretaker. Every week, stock up on healthy snacks that will support your energy and focus. Put snacks in the car, your purse, and places where you may need them on the run.  Stay away from a bunch of carb snacks and focus more on protein, veggies, fruits, and maybe a health grain snack.

Ask a favorite great aunt or someone who wants to help the family to make a big healthy dinner with a big salad once or twice a week. This is a trick we have used just in our busy lives and it works awesome.

3. Emotional Support:
We all need support and someone to talk about what we are going through. Sometimes group settings can be a positive thing but sometimes they can really drag us down. Find uplifting and positive groups or friends that you can share an hour or two a week (maybe on a walk) and vent your feelings. Getting help from a counselor is excellent too.

And of course using your Young Living essential oils to help uplift your moods, stay focused, get a great night’s rest and stay calm is always recommended. My favorites are Peace and Calming on my feet before bed. Stress Away as my perfume or cologne throughout the day, and Idaho Balsam Fir or Lavender 10 drops in a 1/4 cup of Epsom salts and 2 tsps. non-aluminum baking soda for a relaxing bath.

So I want you to make me a promise. Promise me you will look at the above list and pick one thing you will work on these upcoming weeks. We need you healthy and happy. No one knows what tomorrow will bring.

Last week I had the best day I have had in over 12 weeks. I played with my kids part of the day, worked part of the day, I didn’t feel like falling asleep at 2pm, made a great dinner and didn’t pass out at 8:30pm. Why was I feeling so much good energy? Because I am finally through with my first trimester of Pregnancy.
Yes I pregnant. We are 13 weeks and going into our 2nd Trimester.  Although this baby wasn’t planned perfectly he or she is very much wanted. God has shown me a family of 4 children and although I don’t know how that is all going to play out, I accept the joy of being a parent to a small tribe. Being an only child myself with 2 half siblings 11 years apart, I don’t think I or most of my friends and family saw me having more than 1 or 2 children in my lifetime. But this was God’s plan and I accept it.

When you have 3 babies in heaven (through miscarriage) it is very taxing emotionally the first trimester of pregnancy. Every cramp or ache, or slight spotting you think the worst. For me getting pregnant at such a heavy weight I was very discouraged. Not so much about the weight but more that I know it takes a healthy strong body to get through pregnancy. I was really strong when I had Sarah Grace. I don’t feel like that now.

But then God had a talk with me and showed me just because I am pregnant doesn’t mean I can’t continue to grow stronger and healthier. Many women have done it and I can do too.

So my point to you today is no matter what situation you are in, no matter if it isn’t the ideal timing, situation, or even if you feel hopeless. THERE IS HOPE. God has you covered. He has your back, and HE will get you through  no matter what.

God Bless you my friends,

6 Quick and Easy Tips for a Happy, Healthy Family

By Golda Smith

It really blows my mind sometimes when I sit and realize that my babies are no longer babies. Yes they will always be MY babies but they are no longer those helpless little cuddly beings needing to be nursed every few hours. Now they are walking to school without momma, washing their own clothes and other tasks.

The last few years have been a learning process for all of us but as the head of the household, for me especially. Earlier this year I began leading a fitness group for moms because I wanted to encourage them to take care of themselves. Let me say that I am not perfect nor do I want to come off as having it all figured out because I don’t. However, I have figured out what works for my family and I do have to say that we are a beautiful happy, healthy family.

If you are struggling with bringing balance into your home please allow me to share my six quick tips to creating your happy healthy family.

Daily prayer time- It starts with self, taking time preferably before the daily hustle begins to sit still and talk with God which is what I define prayer to be. Something else that we do as a family is to pray before we head out the door.

Sit down for a meal together- In today’s hectic world, it’s almost impossible to sit down and enjoy a meal for one much less as a family but pick one and stick to it. Research shows that families that eat at least one meal together tend to be closer knit, have more conversations and eat healthier.

Make exercise play time- No matter how old your children are, you can always turn exercise into play time. When my children were toddlers, we made a game out of tidying up their room. Now on the playground we do pull ups and push-ups, we squat with the laundry basket. Just have fun with it and don’t use your children as an excuse. Let them be your reason for being happy and healthy.

Get everyone on board with meal planning- People often ask me if my children eat what I eat and the answer is yes. They may not love everything I prepare and that’s all right but I do get their agreement as to the upcoming weekly meal plan. Planning ahead saves me from stressing over what to prepare and making unhealthy choices.

Keep healthy tasty snacks on deck- “Preparation is the key to success.” -Alexander Graham Bell. If you want you and your children to eat healthy then there really is a simple solution…don’t buy crap! You as the head of the household hold the purse strings. Keep some fruits (dry or fresh) on deck. There are some healthy snack choices as well, one of my favorites are Whey Thins. Perfect for the late nights when I want to crunch on something a little salty and I feel great giving it to my children as well.

Praise 10x more than you criticize- Certainly if you have children you know that sometimes they can try your patience and you may have found yourself in constant correction mode where you are constantly criticizing them. It’s sometimes done unconsciously but it happens. What I want to suggest is that for every criticism, you look for ten ways to praise your child. It could be as simple as letting them know how much you appreciate the fact that they close the door quietly, that they are caring and compassionate. Look for ways to lift them up and watch them rise to the level of your expectations.

Now comes the fun part…it’s your turn. Tell us how these tips are sitting with you and how you are creating a happy healthy family.

I Am Not Going to Stop Sharing

By | Total Wellness | No Comments

I have been humbled by your recent response to my URGENT message telling you that I was taking my articles that talk about Essential Oils and Natural Remedies into a Private Association. You have sent me prayers, warm wishes, encouragement, and comfort. I cannot tell you how much that means to my family and I.

But I want you to know something. I am not going to stop sharing. That’s right. Since July 2011 I have shared my experiences and heart in newsletters and blogs. I have shared many other wonderful stories and introduced you to people whose stories inspire and encourage us.

We will continue to Share. Unfortunately most of our Essential Oil and Health Blogs will be in a Private Association Membership site but many of our personal experiences, Moms of Faith, and just encouraging and motivating posts will stay right here and we will continue to share them.

I am not scared, upset, or angry with this situation. I realize what is important in this world. And although I do feel it is important for all of us to stand up for our rights and work towards stopping this non-sense in our government, media and health care systems I will not be ruled by fear.I know Who my Faith is in and God can do all things with those who Believe.

So in the big picture of things, we still need to be grateful for our blessings. This morning I was reading about the Harnisch Family and their son Gabe. My heart went out to this Christian family who has poured so much into their genius son who suffers from ADHD and OCD and unfortunately has become a threat to the other kids in the house. After years of research they have found a school for boys like him that has helped their son find peace, confidence, a good work ethic, and respect for those in leadership. The school is very costly and they took out a loan for $30,000 already but need to raise another $30,000 for their son to continue at the school. I am asking you to go to this link and see their story. I am asking you to pray for the miracle they need, pray for Gabe their son, and if you feel led please give to this family in need.

We won’t stop sharing. We won’t stop helping and we won’t be silenced because we all are called to do God’s work in whatever form it is.

God Bless you and your family,

Back to School Tips: Soda, Kids’ Health and Behavioral Problems

Back to School Tips: Soda, Kids’ Health and Behavioral Problems

“If you want kids to be less violent, stop giving them this,” said the headline on Twitter. To find out more, I clicked on the link and found an article titled “Soda drinking tied to violent behavior in kids” by the Daily News.

The news said that children consuming four or more servings of soda per day are likely to display bad behavior. Studies show that these kids may have withdrawal and attention problems, destroy other people’s belongings and get into fights and physical attacks.

Here are six more problems related to drinking soda and sugar drinks:

Sugar overload
A 20 oz. Mountain Dew contains 77g. of sugar and a 7 Eleven 64 oz. Double Gulp Coke contains 186g of sugar. Dr. Mercola has an article on What Happens to Your Body Within an Hour of Drinking a Coke.

He said within the first 10 minutes, you get 10 teaspoons of sugar in your system, within 20 minutes your blood sugar spikes and your liver responds and turns the sugar overload into fat. By 40 minutes, your blood pressure rises and your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. After an hour you’ll start to have a sugar crash. (Read more here.)

The Truth about Sugar Addiction
The nine benefits of drinking water

Additives and artificial color
A question, “Do you use additives in Coca-Cola?” was posted on Coca Cola Britain’s site. The answer was “We do use additives in some of our drinks, including Coca Cola.”

What are the additives found in your soda drink and why are they harmful? The Consumer Report said caramel color is added to many soft drinks to turn them brown and some of these contain carcinogenic chemical called 4-methylimidazole (4-MeI). They tested the 12-ounce samples of Pepsi One and Malta Goya to have 29 micrograms per can or bottle of 4-MeI. They tested on 81 cans and bottles of popular soda brands from five manufacturers.

Read more about 4-MeI on FDA’s website.

Bad for the teeth
PubMed’s report on “Dental erosion and severe tooth decay related to soft drinks: a case report and literature review” said that the acids and sugars in soft drinks have both acidogenic and cariogenic potential. In layman’s term, it will result in potential tooth decay and enamel erosion.

The publication said sugar-free soft drinks have the same erosive potential as sugar-containing soft drinks. So those with artificial sweeteners will pose the same problems.

Dehydration
We may have come to the assumption that any form of liquid will help hydrate our body. Soda and sugar water may give us an immediate quench of thirst but the reality is the sugar and caffeine inside will speed up dehydration.

Dehydration will then lead to tiredness and mood swings.

Increase obesity and diabetes
“If a child drinks just one soda a day, it will lead to 15.6 pounds of weight a year,” said UCSF. These are empty calories loaded with sugar, additives and caffeine. If a child drinks one soda and two glasses of Kool-Aid each day, he or she would have consumed 390 calories a day.

One pound of fat is 3,500 calories. If the child drinks that amount every day, he or she would potentially increase 40 pounds of weight from drinking soda and sugar drink.

Are sugary drinks the major contributor to obesity in America?

To Harvard School of Public Health the answer is YES. The study is poignant and here are some highlights of why sugary drinks including soda are dangerous to our children’s health:

1. The standard size soft drinks before 1950s was 6.5 ounces.
2. By the 1960s 12-ounce cans were introduced.
3. Early 1990s, 20-ounce plastic bottles were normal.
4. 2011 the 1.25-liter (42-ounce) bottle was introduced.
5. In the 1970s, sugary drinks made up about 4% of US daily calorie intake
6. 2001 risen to 9% and by 1999 to 2004 the average was 224 calories (11% of daily calorie intake) per day from sugary drinks.

Kids ages 6 to 11 consume 130 to 209 calories per day by 2008. (Source: Harvard School of Public Health)

It is not surprising when I saw the chart on CDC showing:

Between 1976-1980 and 2007-2008 obesity among children ages 6 to 11 rose from 6.5% to 19.6%.

Bad behavior
The Journal of Pediatrics reported on August 16, 2013 “Soft drinks and behavioral problems in young children.” In the study, the journal finds that aggression, attention problems, and withdrawal behavior are all associated with soft drink consumption in young children.

This study assessed about 3,000 5-year-old children from 20 large U.S. cities, and 43% of children consumed at least one serving of soft drinks per day, 4% consumed four or more.

Poor diet, obesity, bad behavior, dental problems, type 2 diabetes and poor health have been linked to sugar drinks and soda.

Are your kids drinking soda or sugar drinks?

What are the alternatives to soda and sugar drinks for your kids as they are heading back to school?

Surprisingly more soda and sugar drinks are being consumed at home than outside.  I found a Math Project by an elementary school in Waikele Hawaii. The Math Project showed on average the 464 families consumed four cans of soda per family per day. A total of 1,856 per day, 12,992 per week, 55,680 per month and 668,160 per year.

The average cost per can of soda was 31 cents. The 464 families spent $575.36 per day, $4,027.52 per week, $17,260.80 per month and $207,129.60 per year. That’s almost a quarter of a million dollars on soda for an average size elementary school with 464 families.

That’s just one case study. How about your kids’ school?

What would happen if they drank pure water, added a drop or two of pure 100% therapeutic grade
·  Lemon
·  Orange
·  Tangerine
·  Slique
·  Peppermint essential oils to the pure water or

NingXia Red to the water?

Firewood and Wood Stove Basics – Five Lessons for Heating with Wood

Firewood and Wood Stove Basics

Here in Florida we are still living with opened windows and air-conditioning. For those who live in the north, it is almost time to turn on the heat. In our series of helpful blog posts to help busy mommas, I thought it would be relevant to end the series with an article by a self-sufficient, work at home single mom from the woods of Canada.

Let me introduce you to Victoria Gazeley from British Columbia, Canada. She is living a life of her dreams in a restored log cabin on 6+ acres in coastal British Columbia with her son. Victoria is an oiler and she said the oils are definitely her go-to for health and wellness, not an after-thought.

To get tips and lessons on heating with wood, please head over to read the guest post by Victoria Gazeley below. Remember to connect with her and find out how to live for 3 weeks without groceries.

Firewood and Wood Stove Basics – Five Lessons for Heating with Wood

By: Victoria Gazeley

Firewood burned in a wood stove is our primary heat source – not just in winter, but year round.  We regularly have fires going in the evening here until the end of May.

When we first moved to our rural property, I had so many questions:  How much wood do we need for winter?  What kind of wood should we burn?  How do I prepare it?  How do I clean the wood stove?  Won’t it make a lot of smoke?  As a city girl, I had no clue about building fires or how to use them for heat.  But I learned fast.  I had to.  We’d have been a little chilly otherwise.

The answers would come over the next year, as I learned the finer points of building and maintaining fires and the wood stove that keeps us cozy. I learned that there is no ‘right’ way to build a fire (no matter how many ‘experts’ try to tell you otherwise).  That wet wood is to be avoided at all costs.  That a hot, clean burn with little to no smoke is the goal.  That our loft can get roasting if the fire has been burning all day (and then, of course, that fans are necessary and required to push the warm air around).

I had so many questions about fire as a heat source, and I’m pretty sure lots of other people do too.  Especially those who are planning on moving to the country, or have just moved.  So I put together my top five lessons for using fire for heat – I hope it’s helpful!

The Top 5 Lessons I’ve Learned About Heating with Wood

1.  There is no ‘right’ way to build a fire.
The ‘experts’ will try to tell you otherwise.  Like how to plant vegetable seeds, everyone you ask will have a different opinion.  So I’ll make it easy for you – try a bunch of different ways and pick the one that’s the least hassle for you and gets the best results.  There are some pretty elaborate fire starting methods out there.  And some that I still don’t see how they actually get a fire going, let alone quickly.  I’m busy – my goal in building a fire is to get it burning fast and to get it burning hot so there’s little to no smoke coming out of the chimney.  Then I don’t want to have to think about it for awhile.  If you check YouTube, you’ll find all sorts of videos on fire building.  Or you can bookmark this fantastic resource: woodheat.org and save yourself the hassle!  Find a method that doesn’t look too complicated and try it out.  You’ll soon find your favorite.  Here’s one I’m going to try next:  the top-down fire starting method.  I tried it once before and it failed miserably (probably because our wood is cut a little chunky), but I’m willing to give it another try.

2.  Better to have too much firewood than not enough.
There are some complicated calculations around for figuring out how much wood you’ll need if you’re heating with with a wood stove.  Annoyingly, most articles will start with ‘it depends’.  Unfortunately, it really does – on where you live, the temperature that particular winter, how well insulated your house is, what kind of wood you’ll be burning, how efficient your wood stove is, whether or not you’re burning wood full time or just using it to augment your primary heating system during cold snaps… you get the picture.

But if this is any help, we have a 700 square foot house, medium insulated (heritage log cabin with single pane glass augmented with storm windows), burn wood exclusively for heat from October through April in an old, probably inefficient wood stove, and live on the West Coast where temperatures are usually quite mild but damp.  Also, I work from home so the fire is burning most of the day.  How much wood do we burn? About 2 cords per season (a ‘cord’ is a pile 4′ x 4′ x 8′, densely packed).  For us, that’s about 4 or 5 trees’ worth, all dead fall and windfall red alder, maple and hemlock from the previous winter.  So for a modest-sized, well insulated home with a new, efficient wood stove burning wood exclusively for heat (with no other major heat sources), most people in the northern States and Canada would be safe with 4 cords or so – but always better to have more, in case it’s a cold winter. (UPDATE November 30, 2013: After a renovation in 2012, we now have about 1000 square feet to heat, including an addition that is nice and open, but the far end being quite far away from the wood stove. The two new rooms have electric baseboard heaters (because the building code requires it), but we don’t use them unless it’s REALLY cold, which last year it wasn’t.  Also, the new building is SUPER insulated, so that’s helping with the heat retention.  In the 2012/2013 season, we used about 3 cords, from October to April.  That’s burning pretty much full time, since I work from home.  This year, 2013/2014, we started using the stove in mid-October, from mid-morning to a stoke-up at 10:00 pm or so, and have used about a cord so far).

3.  Wood stoves are really versatile – especially in a power outage.
I was just reading an article at Mother Earth News talking about eight different alternate power possibilities to use during power outages.  The consensus seemed to be that having a wood stove that could also be used for cooking is the ideal situation.  Obviously, if you live in the desert with no wood supply, that’s a bit of a challenge.  But for the rest of us, it would seem that having a reasonably efficient wood stove in a rural area is smart insurance.  Most winters we have a lot of power outages, and it’s the wood stove that allows us to still have tea, cook our food, and stay warm.  We could use our little Kelly Kettle (which is sort of a mini metal rocket stove), but it’s sort of a pain, as it needs to be used outside.  Or a camp stove, like some recommend, but during a prolonged power outage, propane and butane canisters sell out extremely quickly (provided the stores still have power!).  So a wood stove seems like a good investment.  We’ve used ours to boil water, cook eggs, make toast, and keep big meals warm in cast iron pots.  I can’t recommend enough having one that has a surface you can cook or heat water on.

4.  You NEED fans to push the warm air through your house.
Our old wood stove had a fan that gave up the ghost not long after we moved in.  Which was OK, because it was loud – too loud.  I wanted to replace it with something quiet, and preferably non-electrical.  The solution?  A stove-top Ecofan.  I got the Airplus model (in nickel) and I love it!  It does exactly what it says it does, and more.  It’s silent, starts turning as soon as it’s sensors reach a certain temperature, and uses no electricity.  Which is great, because in a power outage, you really want your wood stove to be performing at peak efficiency.

We also have a hard-wired ceiling fan at the top of our cathedral ceiling, which pushes the warm air back down into the living area and throughout the house.  Obviously, the bigger your house the more you’ll have to think about how the warm air will flow.  Last year we had an issue with our bathroom being freezing in the morning, because it’s furthest away from the wood stove.  So we used a plug-in oil heater, which kept the bathroom toasty, but racked up a rather large electrical bill.  Plus it didn’t work when the power was out (then again, neither does the ceiling fan).  Last year, I had the brilliant idea (!) to keep the bathroom door open (except when in use, of course) and voila!  The bathroom is warm in the morning.  Well, maybe not warm, but at least there are no icicles hanging from the shower head.  Problem solved.

5.  Good insulation is your friend.
This seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people still have single paned windows and big air spaces around their doors.  Especially in old houses, which you’ll likely find on properties you might be considering for your modern homesteading adventure.  We live in an 80-plus year old log cabin, so spent quite a bit of energy ensuring all the cracks and crevices were filled with insulation and chinked.  It does still have single paned windows in the original building, though, so replacing them with triple-glazed wood windows is on our list of eventual renovations.  In the meantime, we’ve installed storm windows on all the lower windows.  Seems to do the trick.

Will You Heat with Wood this Winter?

These are just a few of the things I’ve learned about heating our home with wood.  I think even if we lived in my brand new timber frame dream house, I’d still consider wood as a primary heat source.  It’s versatile, renewable (at least in our part of the world), it’s been deemed ‘carbon-neutral‘, and for me, it provides a connection to all my ancestors, who had nothing but wood to heat with.

Your situation will be different, though.  Think about your options, and how willing you are to do the work required (sourcing wood, cutting, splitting, piling, hauling, cleaning chimneys, etc.).

If you do decide to heat with wood, chances are you’ll be very happy you did.

If you already heat with wood, do you have any tips to share?  Please do in the comments below – newbie homesteaders will thank you!

Studies show that anti-bacterial soap may be harmful. Yet many schools, hospitals and homes are still using this harmful product. A recent article by The Atlantic stated that antimicrobial chemicals, which are supposed to kill bacteria and other microorganisms, aren’t always effective.

Quoting directly from the article: “Even if you don’t buy the products, you’ll be exposed in public places and in restaurants.” Read more here.

Did you know that you can make your own natural Foaming Hand Soap and soap dispenser? Let Stephanie show you how. If you don’t have the time, get Young Living’s Thieves Foaming Hand Soap.

Create a Mason Jar Soap Dispenser in Two Easy Steps (Plus a Recipe for Thieves Foaming Hand Soap)

By: Stephanie Warnock

I have a problem. It’s called wishful thinking. I am the kind of person who gets all these crazy ideas and will have a thousand projects going and no end in sight. You can imagine what sort of trouble I ran in to when I discovered Pinterest a few years ago. I have a love-hate relationship with that site. (If you haven’t already, head over to my profile and follow me!)

Within this realm of wishful thinking and never-ending projects, I decided I was going to make my own mason jar soap dispensers. As a canning and preserving addict, I have an entire basement of beautiful glass jars just begging to be used (unless it’s canning season, then I never seem to have enough). The past few months I have also been saving hoarding old soap pumps. It seemed silly to purchase pumps new when I could recycle old ones for free.

It just so happens our last bottle of store-bought soap ran out this past week. I decided it was time to finally make those fantastic soap dispensers I have been dreaming about for months. I have to tell you… easiest… project… ever! I’m not sure why it took me so long to crack down and do it. It literally took me less than five minutes to make and cost me nothing.

So how does one make a mason jar soap dispenser? I’ll tell you.

Supplies
Mason Jar (I used a wide mouth)
Rim and Lid
Soap pump (foaming or regular)
Hammer
Screw Driver
Embellishments (optional)

Directions
1. Using the screwdriver and hammer, create a hole large enough to fit your soap pump. Create the hole small enough to hold the pump snug. (If you make it too big, try again with a new lid, or use hot glue to hold your pump in place.)

2. Add soap, screw on the lid and decorate to your liking. I used a simple piece of twine for mine.

That’s it! You’re done. I told you it was easy.

Now on to the soap…

As a Young Living Essential Oils Independent Distributor, I sell a lot of Thieves foaming hand soap. This soap will cleanse, defend, and condition the skin with essential oils without all the harmful chemicals found in conventional hand soaps. I considered purchasing some for our own personal use but as we have small children who like to empty soap bottles at each hand washing, we simply cannot afford to purchase it quite yet. Since I had all my supplies on hand from my first attempt at making hand soap, I thought, why not try to make my own Thieves soap? I always keep a bottle of Thieves oil on hand. How hard could it be?

Create a Mason Jar Soap Dispenser in Two Easy Steps (Plus a Recipe for Thieves Foaming Hand Soap)

photo via Young Living Essential Oils

Instead of trying to come up with my own formulation, I checked out Pinterest to see if it had been done before. Sure enough, it has! I simply followed the directions at Baby Steps to Essential Oils to make my own Thieves foaming hand soap. Going one step further, I decided to do a cost comparison to see how much I was spending to make my own versus purchasing it through Young Living.

Now if you’re a Young Living Independent Distributor, don’t hate me for sharing a hack that could be making me more money in the long run. First and foremost, I have to spend my husband’s hard earned money well and that means passing up on a product in order to spend less money.

So how much did it cost me to make 16 oz. of Thieves foaming hand soap? $1.14! That’s cheaper than purchasing chemical-laden soap from the store! If you don’t mind spending a little more, you can use Vitamin E oil instead of the vegetable glycerine. I was looking for the cheapest though, so I went with the latter.

I like to avoid using plastics whenever I mix essential oils so my homemade mason jar soap dispenser was a perfect fit for this new soap recipe. It adds just enough creative flair to our otherwise boring bathroom sink and I can have confidence in knowing not only are our hands being cleaned, we’re also avoiding the harmful toxins of conventional soaps.

7 Back to School Safety Tips

7 Back to School Safety Tips

Whether your kids are homeschooled or going to pre-school, elementary, middle, high school or college, there are many things to help them prepare for the exciting new school year. It is also a time when some parents have to cope with going back to school anxiety and safety issues.

From school violence to finding after school programs to head lice to common cold and flu to overscheduling- the list of concerns for parents and kids can be overwhelming. So to help you look through some of the concerns, here are our 7 back to school safety tips:

One: Backpack
The cute backpacks with kids’ favorite TV characters are usually hard to resist. To some kids, a backpack is a self-expression, a way to make a statement and to show off their favorite character or shows.

Did you know that backpack might be the cause of back pain, muscle aches and headaches?

Here are two articles I’ve written:
Back to School: Backpacks and back pain
Is Your Kid’s Backpack Hurting Them?

Two: School bullying
Bullying Statistics stated that about 30% of students in the United States are involved in bullying on a regular basis, either as a victim, bully or both. This bullying includes physical, verbal and cyber, which may also happen outside of the school property.

It is disturbing to read that 77% of all students being bullied verbally include mental bullying, verbal abuse, spreading rumors, yelling obscenities or other derogatory terms. These may eventually lead to poor self-esteem, depression, anxiety about going to school and even suicidal thoughts. (Source: Bullying Statitics)

How would you know if your child is a victim or is bullying others at school?

Here is what one parent said about making sure her kids were safe in middle and high school:
1. Get involved in the school activities at least twice a month. These activities could be school picture day, helping out in the library or getting involved in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
2. Spend time talking to kids about their friends and school every day. This was not easy but possible.
3. Pray for discernment and pray for her kids in school. She was involved in a Moms in Prayer local group that met each week to pray for their middle and high schoolers.

Encouraging book about bullying:
Stand Strong: You Can Overcome Bullying (and Other Stuff That Keeps You Down) by Nick Vijucic. The author, Nick was born without arms and legs. He was once the bullies’ target. This book will give kids strategies for developing a “bully defense system” and more.

Three: Playground
Every year over 200,000 children are treated in emergency rooms due to playground injuries.

Swings, seesaw, monkey bars, exercise rings, swinging ropes and trampolines are made for kids of different age groups. Some younger kids like to test their limits and wander off to the ‘big kid’ swings and exercise rings.

Find out if your kids’ school has different play areas for different age groups. Playgrounds in schools with asphalt, soil or asphalt are unsafe for kids.

Here is a playground safety checklist:

Four: Traveling to school
Parents may have sleepless nights thinking about their teens driving, taking the school bus or public transportation, walking or cycling to school.

Unfortunately the reality is car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens. More than half of teens killed in car crashes did not wear a seat belt. And a study by The Allstate Foundation showed 80% of teens cite their parents as having the most influence over teens’ driving habits.

If your kids are taking the school bus, here are some tips.

Make sure your kid is wearing a helmet and knows the route and traffic rules if they are cycling to school.

Five: Caretaker and after school program
The reality is when mom and dad work full time outside of home, they have to find a caretaker or an after school programs to accommodate the kids after school. It could be from 3 pm to 8 pm for some families.

How do you know who is the right caretaker or which is the best after school program for your kids?

For a comprehensive checklist on what to look for when hiring a caretaker for your kids, please read Dr. Phil’s article on Protecting Your Child- Even from Caretakers.

The article shows ways to conduct a background check, how to look for red flags, tips to interview and a way to monitor your caretaker without installing nanny cams. I thank God for my kids’ caretaker. She is an amazing woman of God and she loves my kids.

Note: If you are a mom wanting a way to transition from a workplace to working at home to be with your kids, please read this article:

Six: Schedule and staying sane
Being under scheduled or overscheduled are both threatening problems for kids and families. How do you manage your time and stay sane?

Seven: Lunchbox
I couldn’t agree more with the phrase “you are what you eat!” A recent article on FoxNews reported that too much sugar can cause cold, cough allergies, croup, acid reflux and weakened immunity in kids.

What’s in your kid’s lunchbox or school cafeteria tray each day?

Have you seen the beautifully packed, all-done-for-you lunches for kids called Lunchables of mini hot dogs, a sugared drink and a chocolate bar filled with sugar? Or the kiddie yogurts, fruit juice boxes with puzzles, riddles and your kid’s favorite TV characters or the 100% fruit-infused fruit candy?

You can read The Atlantic on The Candification of Our Food: The Case of the Fruit-less Fruit Snack.

For teens these days there are the Lunchables teen version called Uploaded. According to Ad Age, Uploaded is higher in calories, sodium and saturated fat.

The Fringe

the fringe

It is hard to believe 13 years ago the Twin Towers vanished. That incident led to much grief and loss. To some of us, it was also a period of awakening and readjusting on life priorities.

As we remember that awful day I felt that there are more dreadful things that happen every single day in the world that are not reported or resolved. It is child abuse. Tennyson Center of Child Abuse wrote:

● A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds
● More than five children die every day as a result of child abuse.
● Approximately 80% of children that die from abuse are under the age of 4.
● It is estimated that between 50-60% of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates.
● More than 90% of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator in some way.

The list continues. To find out more head over to Tennyson’s website.

Today I would like to share an encouraging story from Beth Tolliver of www.thethrivingmom.com. She was one of the statistics. However she is a beacon of light today and is ready to be a voice for those who have lost their voice.

The Fringe

By: Beth Tolliver

I was always part of “the fringe.” My family wasn’t like other families, even though it took me a few years to figure that out. My experiences have been quite different from the majority of people I’ve come to know throughout life. Hey, even my blog is “fringe!” I don’t write about homeschooling (mainly because my child is 3), I don’t have an all-organic “crunchy” life, and I certainly am not qualified to write about anything related to style (seriously). So, I do want to write about the things I know and have experienced, good and bad.

The other night, I was talking to my husband about the desire of my heart: to reach out to the fringe, the abused, neglected and disregarded of the world. The ones who sit on church pews every Sunday hiding secrets. The ones who just can’t trust enough to try going to church anymore. The ones who want to experience God’s love, but don’t know how and feel scared and far away. I know these people because I AM one of those people.

I was relaying to my husband how abuse within Christian families is, in my experience, never talked about. In fact, in preparing to write this post, I did quite a bit of research looking for statistics and information regarding abuse within Christian families. The results were disturbing: clergy abusing church parishioners and parents who abuse children due to child training advice. These are terrible, terrible wrongs that are done to children. But even here, I don’t quite fit.

You see, our Christian family was at church “every time the doors were open,” as it was deemed an appropriate way to express one’s love and devotion to God. But behind closed doors, the truth was grossly different than the facade. I’m the child of a parent who struggled with mental illness, was haunted by their own past of child abuse, and had serious physical issues that caused further emotional trauma and inner turmoil. I can still see this parent sitting in the chair, reading their Bible every night before bed, listening to preaching tapes during the day and watching Christian TV programs. But when the anger quickly became rage, and the eyes darkened and air was too heavy to breathe, us children were beaten, bruised, berated, bullied and thrown into walls. All this while the other parent looked away with the full knowledge of what was happening to us. There were other types of abuse I suffered at the hand of other relatives, most of them devoted Christians, as well.

We weren’t bad children, just imperfect kids, you know. Kids who needed to be lovingly disciplined and shown the love of God. We weren’t wrong, we weren’t born with “an evil presence.” We were born in the image and likeness of God, like everyone on this earth.

I know what it’s like to live two different lives; the church life and the real life. I’ve gone in my Sunday best only to have the police and social services at my house during the week – because the neighbors could hear us screaming. Yeah, I remember toeing the line between two worlds, always on the fringe. I’ve experienced the withholding of love, acceptance and approval; the bullying, manipulation and shame. I’ve lived through not being protected by His own, being given lots of reasons and excuses for why horrible things happened to us. Being told that I should just “get over it” when what I really needed was to go through a healing process.

In summary, the point is this: I know what it’s like to suffer at the hands of Christians who made it clear by their actions that they cared more about their reputation and their good works for the church/God, but were horrible to their own family members. I’ve experienced that a lot. The reason I write about any of this is because I KNOW there is help. I’m walking in a level of freedom today that I never thought possible 20 years ago. There’s a way out and you don’t have to live with secrets and the shame of what was done to you. You don’t have to keep carrying secrets to protect others while you die inside. I haven’t “arrived;” I still have struggles and set backs. The healing process is like peeling an onion – there is layer after layer to work through. But if you’ll stick in there and cling to God, it will get better and better.

I’ve spent years going through intensive healing with God through all types of help: books, personal therapy, trauma recovery therapy, prayer, writing and music. I’m in a good place now and I want to help YOU get there, too. If you’ve ever been the victim of physical, sexual, verbal and/or emotional abuse, I can empathize as I have walked through those experiences. I’ll be devoting a whole portion of this website to inner healing as it relates to:

  • overcoming past abuse and trauma
  • forgiving God’s people and the ones who have abused you
  • abuse of spiritual authority
  • setting healthy boundaries within relationships
  • renewing your mind and emotions to the truth of the loving nature of God
  • how to handle post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • dealing with relationships with others who don’t understand your distinctive challenges
  • the unique challenges adult child abuse survivors face when they become parents, and
  • whatever else God impresses upon me to write about inner healing.

If you could use some help and encouragement in these areas, please join me! I’ll be writing about resources that I believe will be a great source of help to you. You are loved and welcomed here!

Blessings,

Beth

Why Having a Plan B is Good for Moms, Dads and Retirees

Why Having a Plan B is Good for Moms, Dads and Retirees

As I landed in the South of France for a work vacation, I felt extremely overwhelmed. I remembered that I was once a broke college student living on government assistance. I made a decision to start a little home business 14 years ago. I didn’t know at that time it was God’s plan for me. I didn’t even believe that I could be who I am today.

Fast forward 2010, at the age of 35, my first son Joshua was born. In 2011, I transitioned my wellness and hands on business to become a mommy blogger sharing my expertise online and became a ‘stay-at-home’ mom.

Was it easy? No. I wanted to give up many times. In April 2013 after two miscarriages I had my “miracle” daughter Sarah Grace. In November 2013, we moved from my familiar surroundings in Upstate New York to Florida.

There were no interruptions in my business or paycheck. In fact I achieved Young Living’s Diamond Leadership after my move to Florida.

Did I know then that I had a Plan B? Not at all! Without a Plan B, I would not have been where I am today- a work at home mom running a home-based business and serving clients and growing my team from all over the world.

What is your Plan B?

Parents magazine’s article, Why I quit my job? featured five women who quit their job to be stay-at-home moms. The question was: What motivated them?

Here are their reasons:

1. Long hours, pressure and a demanding job.
2. Salary barely above minimum wage and wasn’t enough to cover the cost of childcare.
3. Worried that her kids will be closer to her mother-in-law who watched the kids while she engaged in a full time career outside of home.
4. Long commute.
5. Difficulty finding good and affordable childcare.

As a mom, I know how they felt. I’ve seen and heard time and time again from women from all walks of life having to decide on their career path after the children were born. Some continued working successfully and there is nothing wrong with that. Some have chosen to stay-at-home and are able to make ends meet.

However there are many who find it hard to survive with one income or became unhappy because there was no outlet contribute to their family’s financial needs.

There is another group of moms and dads that I’ve encountered. They had a well-prepared plan for their career path. Unfortunately, that career path was cut short, either because they lost their job or because of an illness.

As of July 2014, the Labor Department reported that 3.2 million Americans were long-term unemployed (jobless for 27 weeks or more), 2.2 million were marginally attached to the labor force and 7.5 million are only employed part time for economic reasons.

My husband Jay found himself in that situation in 2006. We thank God we had our ‘little home based’ business to rely on for food on the table and other living expenses.

What is your Plan B?

There is another group of workers in America today who are suffering. They are like John, a story told by The Washington Post. John is 55, works at the Philadelphia International Airport wheeling elderly passengers from ticket counters to their gate and makes $5.25 an hour.

The article continued…
Usually for lunch he buys a candy bar. His skin flakes from psoriasis, which gets worse when he worries, which, these days, is all the time. He can’t pay for treatments to soothe the itching or for a car to shorten his pre-dawn commute.

“I can’t save money,” he said recently, “to buy the things I need to live as a human being.” Read more here.

He is one of the many low-income workers who are grateful they hold a job while many are having economic anxiety.

Another group of Americans are the baby boomers approaching retirement age. The 2008 financial crisis left many with broken nest eggs despite news of better returns of investment. A report by Fox Business News said the average Social Security check is $1,294 a month for a single person and $2,111 for a couple.

They say boomers can’t afford to retire. What is their Plan B? The same Fox Business article suggested “become roommates with your adult children” as one of the tips along with finding a part-time job.

Another question was raised recently on why there is an increase in suicide among baby boomers.

The Washington Post reported in May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a dramatic spike in suicide among middle-aged people – highest among men in their 50s – 30 per 100,000. It is higher than motor vehicle accidents. And women in their early 60s – 7 in 100,000.

The article told a story about Mike who struggled with depression and when he had a back injury that forced him to go on disability, his situation became worse. With powerful prescribed pain medications, two days after his 49th birthday he killed himself. Read more here.

Moms, dads and retirees are facing many challenges today. How do you navigate your life through challenges and obstacles? How do you know which opportunity works for you when it comes to devoting your time to a Plan B or a home-based business?

Debra Raybern was a young widowed mother. She found her Plan B, overcame many challenges and here is her success story:

As kids are back in school and routine are in place, it is time to ponder:

How would your life look like five years from now if you were doing the same thing over and over again without making any changes?

I don’t know your situation. While in Southern France I met people who were willing to make some changes, worked on their Plan B and are living a more fulfilling life helping others do the same with a Young Living home-based business.

Organic-Beef-Rice-Casserole

September brings in a new season for most families. Some of us have kids going to a new grade level or new school, some are going to school for the first time and yet others find themselves empty-nesters with kids going off to college.

Busy mommas are always looking for ways to get things done faster without compromising on wellness. This month, I will be highlighting some of the mommy bloggers I’ve been following. These blog posts will include recipes, overcoming challenges and encouragement written by busy mommas who work from home. They partner with Young Living and share their stories through their blog and social media platforms.

Today I would like to introduce you to Catherine Slezinger of www.theorganicmomma.com. She is known as the organic momma to her community, an oiler and mom of young children. I’ve selected a recipe she shared on her website on how to create a one dish meal with beef, broccoli and brown rice.

Recipe For Organic Beef, Broccoli & Brown Rice Casserole

By: Catherine Slezinger

In case you need something easy, nutritious and filling to make tonight, here’s a yummy recipe for a delicious comfort food dish- organic beef and rice casserole. (This is my adaptation of all the beef & rice casserole recipes I looked up that called for cream of mushroom soup) 🙂

This is also an excellent recipe to make and freeze a double batch for later!

Ingredients:

2 tbsp organic butter

2 lbs organic grass fed beef

1 organic onion, cut into strips

1 head organic broccoli, cut into florets

1 organic bell pepper, cut into strips

1 cup cooked organic brown rice (I use my Vita Clay)

2 cups organic sour cream

1 can organic diced tomatoes, such as the Bionaturae Organic brand

1 teaspoon sea salt, such as Real Salt or Himalayan Salt

2-3 teaspoons organic dried parsley

Shredded organic raw cheddar cheese

Directions:

Saute the onions in butter until soft and translucent, then add peppers. Saute the peppers until soft.

Add the ground beef and brown until just browned. Don’t overcook because it will be going in the oven 🙂 Season with the salt.

Add the sour cream and diced tomatoes and mix well. Add the parsley.

Transfer to a large bowl, and add the cooked rice and mix well.

Layer the broccoli on a large baking dish, and scoop the beef & rice mixture over the top.

Top with the shredded cheese, and bake in a 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes, covered.

Sprinkle some more parsley on top before serving and ENJOY! 🙂

With lots of love,

Catherine Slezinger

Testimonials and Some Hard Facts About Work, Health and the Economy

By | Home Based Business, Total Wellness | No Comments

hard facts

Recently I did a survey for those who have decided to do Young Living as a business. The question was “Your WHY and reason for doing Young Living as a home business?”

The answers were very encouraging to me. I don’t know your reason for reading my blog posts or how you found this website. But all I know is there are some hard facts about women working from home or outside of home, about our health and economy.

Before I present you with the WHY and reason for doing Young Living as a home business, let’s take a look at the three hard facts:

One: Women in the workforce/stay-at-home moms
Recently the Economist published an article titled “The return of the stay-at-home mother” and USA Today reported that nearly three in 10 American mothers are now stay-at-home moms who don’t hold a job outside the home. The numbers are increasingly showing women leaving the work force to either pursue motherhood full-time or doing something on the side while raising kids.

Pew Social Trend reported that these 10.4 million “stay-at-home’ mothers includes those who are unable to find work, are disabled or are enrolled in school. The largest group is the “traditional” married stay-at-home mothers with working husbands.

The Economist said the average full-time working woman earns just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. Women are still being paid lower than men.

Staying at home could be a practical decision for family with children. Parents magazine said when you run the cost of childcare, commuting expenses (train/bus/subway tickets or gas tank fill-ups), lunches, dry cleaning and buying new duds suitable for the office, the cost of working may not benefit the family at all. Read more here.

However what do you do if you can’t pay your bills after making a decision to stay-at-home? Many reports show that the lack of money is not just a problem with one-income families. It happens to many two-income families too.

The Washington Post‘s article on “Happy Days no more: Middle –class families squeezed as expenses soar, wages stall” reported that the Johnsons both working and making a combined salary of $90,000 a year have fallen behind on their electric bills for March and April.

Families filing bankruptcy rose to 1.6 million and a book by Elizabeth Warren, “The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke” tells many stories of middle-class mothers and fathers.

Two: Our health
Here is a testimonial from Sage M:

I have been in a health/fitness/wellness career for 25 years and it was crushing my spirit. I struggled with supervisors who censored the truth about health and wellness in order to keep the ADA or FDA or USDA happy.

Being self-employed means that I am able to passionately speak the truth and share the HOPE that there is wellness without expensive (and often dangerous) pharmaceuticals.

Young Living offers me the flexibility to work from home, set my own schedule, and take an entire day every week to serve my community as a volunteer EMT.

I can (for the first time in my career) prioritize my own health and well-being! As I advance in rank and take on more of a leadership role, I can also now see that I will be able to provide financial stability for my family. Supporting my team and hearing from them how Young Living has changed their lives is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever been a part of.

Americans are faced with a high cost of health care and easy access to prescription drugs. The White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy wrote:

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that over 70 percent of people who abused prescription pain relievers got them from friends or relatives… further, opiate overdoses, once almost always due to heroin use, are now increasingly due to abuse of prescription painkillers.

What if we shared the all-natural 100% pure essential oils to help ease the emotional stresses and body aches and pain?

Three: Economy
Three quarters of Americans polled in 2008 said the American Dream was harder to attain and according to USA TODAY, to live the American Dream you need to make at least $130,000 per year in 2013. With inflation, the amount will definitely increase. The truth is only 1 in 8 households in America makes that amount.

For some of us, the American Dream is not about bigger houses or having the newest vehicle, it is about the pursuit of happiness, great health and wellness, safety and security in money and environment and building strong families and communities.

To Georgia W it is about:

I choose to do the business side of Young Living because it provides me the opportunity to help many others with a more natural way of life and better health. I marvel each time I hear how the oils and products have made a difference in someone’s life. They work for babies, kids, big people, older people and animals.

What a wonderful gift God has given us to share with others.  Georgia W 10 Year Young Living user 5 years in the business.

Katie A. said:

I chose Young Living as a home business because I saw first hand with my family how oils have changed our lives. My daughter is no longer on a daily dose of miralax or prescription allergy meds and after extensive research Young Living would be the only oils I would trust with my daughter.

I can’t help but share my personal success stories with my friends and family. It is just an added bonus I make a commission!

Beth T. revealed:

I fell into YL as a business by accident. I had bought the premium kit just to use on my family back in 2013. I made a few comments about it on my personal FB page out of amazement of how well they worked. Then people started asking me about it.

It took off from there and even though it’s growing slowly right now, it is growing. But the real reason I do it?

It’s hearing someone tell me they’ve been on 3 blood pressure medicines to no avail, were afraid of being hospitalized, etc. Then they tried one of the oils and they have the lowest blood pressure they’ve had in 20 years and are now cutting back on meds under their Dr.’s supervision!

It’s my husband who had chronic headaches from working at a PC all day (he’s a graphic designer and digital sculptor). He would pop 2 ibuprofens per day; sometimes more. Then he started using peppermint oil and doesn’t need the pain relievers any more!

That’s why I’m with Young Living. Seeing illnesses turn around, treating symptoms naturally, watching people get breakthroughs in their health,…there is no price on that for me! I thrive on helping people and YL’s products are life changing.

Working on a home based business is not about knocking from door to door, forcing your friends and family to buy your products or stocking a garage full of soaps and detergents. The best way for my team and I is to find products that you can use and that give you the results needed and share your testimonials online or offline.

Young Living Essential Oils shows the power of pure essential oils and achieving wellness solutions. It is about experiencing nature’s gifts of wellness and harmony and creating total wellness for work at home moms, families and our community.

Hilary S said:

I used the oils as a customer for 1 year before signing up (I didn’t even know I could!) I saw a huge difference in my non-medicated ADHD child and began using them daily on our whole family. I am a fitness instructor for my full time income. I know I cannot do that forever and needed a “retirement plan”. This business has allowed us to move into a bigger house (with my own office!!). Moms of Faith: Beth Tolliver’s Story on Living a Life of Faith, PTSD and the Rubbles of Child Abuse

By | Moms of Faith, Total Wellness, Total Wellness Mom | 4 Comments

moms of faith

I had first started trying to commit suicide at the age of 8. I told one of my parents and was blown off. At 17 I became emotionally non-functioning. I had lived most of my childhood in states of deep dark depression and anxiety with no one to talk to or get help. I began meeting with a counselor and asked her if there was somewhere she could send me so I could get away from the madness. I spent a month, at my request, in a treatment facility for emotionally troubled youth. I was no longer the weirdo outcast living some odd life.

Beth Tolliver was abused as a child and suffered silently. Until she took matters into her own hands and checked into a treatment facility at the age of 17. Though she attended church, sadly the pastors were not trained to handle severe traumatic issues and recovery.

She said, “There were times that I received great help from reading Scripture, and there have been times that I hurt so badly I couldn’t even touch my Bible. I humbly asked God to understand and for grace. The most help I got was from reading Christian “self-help” books. This became, and still is, a huge part of my healing journey. The first book I read as a teenager, that I bought with my own money from my first job, was called Search for Significance.”

It was hard to read the Bible and being close with God while witnessing her church-going Christian abusive parent and compliant parent reading the Bible every day and watching Christian TV. It caused a lot of caution and apprehension in her about God.

Could you imagine a child seeing an abusive parent reading the Bible at night, then inflicting terrible abuse on the kids? Wouldn’t this cause a lot of confusion, caution and apprehension about God?

It was difficult for Beth to understand. She was very scared of God and thought He put her there to be punished for being a ‘bad person.’

When asked what caused the paradigm shift in her life, Beth said there have been a few paradigm shifts in her life but the first was at age 17 when she was with a group of peers who were all dealing with troubled backgrounds in the treatment center.

Some of these kids had it worse than she did and some had parents who didn’t even want to visit them and didn’t want them back. Most were sexually and verbally abused.

At the treatment facility Beth had an eye opening experience and was able to process the years of repressed emotions. Most importantly she was told she didn’t deserve the abuse she suffered. She had a heart to heart encounter with God, a place where she was free to talk to God, not being judged or told to get over it. She received the assurance that there is a better future for her life.

Though the pain didn’t disappear right away, her faith and relationship with God gave her hope. Her parents were divorced by this time, but she was still having consistent contact with her abusive parent and that made healing virtually impossible.

She said, “I was living with the compliant/co-dependent parent; not being physically abused anymore, and not being sexually abused by another relative anymore, but still living with someone I consider guilty by association for letting the abuse happen and, at times, participating in it. It was a very suffocating environment where that parent just wanted to move on like nothing happened.“

Another huge paradigm shift was after she got married. Her husband was responsible in helping her see how unhealthy her relationship was with some family members. She learned to set boundaries. Living with boundaries had helped her discover peace and an emotionally healthier lifestyle.

Beth said, “At some point you have to realize that it is them, and not you. You are only responsible for your own health and well-being. You are not responsible for everyone’s feelings or making everyone happy or making everyone understand you.”

It was freeing. She realized the importance of placing her husband, son and her own well-being as her priorities.

moms of faith beth tolliver

Our conversation continues…

How does a faith-filled life look like for Beth now?

A faith filled life now looks good, but broken at times. I have found my own voice. I no longer have to keep silent about what happened to me to protect the images of the responsible parties.

I now know that God never wants people to be abused, violated, manipulated and controlled.

I stop putting so much pressure on myself, but have slip ups with that. I can never be perfect enough to make God happy or to fix everything, which is great because HE NEVER ASKED THAT OF ME!

If I could do it on my own, if it was all about me, then Christ would be completely unnecessary.

I still have continued struggles with fear that God will abandon and forsake me. I still have fears that God will not help me, particularly when I’m having a panic attack or severe anxiety (things I still deal with now in my late 30’s).

I used to have terrible fear that if I weren’t perfect, God would take everything and everyone away from me.

How does she get through these ‘struggles’?

Keep putting one foot in front of the other. I choose to trust, especially when it’s hard.

Do you still suffer from the lack of faith? If yes, what areas of your life?

Here’s the truth: I don’t know how to parent correctly because I wasn’t parented correctly.

I rely heavily on God especially when it comes to anger and fear. I struggled deeply with fear and anxiety of being a parent when I was pregnant and for the first year of my son’s life.

I was terrified of messing him up and hurting him. I had nightmares and PTSD that was exacerbated from a church we attended for a while. I still have my moments with that but it really gets better with time and walking through it with God’s help.

When I have a rough day, I give myself extra grace and self-care.  There are days I have to get my husband on the phone and just talk it out.

Sometimes I sit and read, or I watch a TV show that is calming or uplifting. One of the best ways to combat fear is to focus fully on the present moment and find a way to laugh!

A faith-filled life means I don’t pretend that I’ve never walked through hell in my life. Being healed doesn’t mean pretending you’ve never suffered. It means you use what the enemy meant for evil and turn it around for God’s good!

It means writing about my life on the blog, sharing my testimony with those who need it. I find more healing by helping others to heal; by pointing them to the peace they can have in Christ. Opening up the dark places of my life is extremely hard, but I feel so much peace when I do it.

Being silent will keep you struggling and unwell. I finally found a church that I know is where I belong and that I am thriving in. It is a place of faith and freedom. I can feel myself getting healthier every time I go to service. I’ve come to know that healing is a choice to receive a gift offered from God.

Here are Beth’s thoughts on how to speak life into a negative situation:

I am a singer and love to worship, so I literally worship my way through negative circumstances. I speak life into those things and into myself as I worship.  When you keep focusing on yourself, your problems and shortcomings, you can become immobilized with fear and panic.

During worship, I focus on Him as the answer to all things. He is everything I never had – it makes me cry just thinking about that.

When I sing, all I see is me and Him together, in a garden of peace. A couple of years ago I went through terrible trauma when what I call my main abusive parent was found dead. There was never an apology offered for the abuse and I had spent my whole life having to parent this parent.

My body began to have uncontrollable panic attacks. During this horrible time, I would keep sermons playing in the house and literally walk back and forth in the living room screaming out that I am not garbage, God loves me, the enemy will not have my life.

God will give you victory but girl you have to fight!!!

You are not destined to repeat your past.  You are not destined to be an abusive parent.  You are not destined for torture. There are so many days I have put my son down for a nap, or just take a break and go to my bedroom and speak out loud that I am not where I came from. I tell my son I love him all the time and I know he will never grown up not having heard that he was loved.

I was grown and married before either of my parents told me they loved me. Loving my son intentionally is life giving to everyone.

Beth’s mission is to encourage those who have gone through the rubble of child abuse and poor health to rebuild a life that is thriving and not just surviving.

Here are 5 helpful tips from Beth to help you build your faith and banish fear-

1. If you need help, there is no shame in getting it. It’s the strong who get help, not the weak. You are not weak for having problems! I know what it’s like to have to put on that church face. Please hear me when I say God is waiting to help you.

2. You are not living in the past because the past still hurts you! These are all lies of the enemy. The church world in general is very uncomfortable with abuse and trauma. And are generally ill-equipped in helping in those areas.

3. Find a certified counselor who is trained in trauma and abuse recovery, do what you can to utilize their services. I NEVER counsel with pastors anymore and will not unless they are trained to help in this area. I’ve gotten more hurt than help by getting poor, but well-intentioned church counsel.

4. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety or panic, there is no shame in taking medication if you need it. I can tell you there are essential oils that have helped me with anxiety. The emotional stress you’re under is depleting your body of nutrients. Make sure you’re getting lots of B vitamins and magnesium. That has helped me a lot, as does a good cardio workout.

5. Whatever help you need, whatever help works for you, do it!  You owe it to yourself and your family.

Beth Tolliver has been married to Dean for 14 years and is a mom to a precious 3.5-year-old son. Beth’s mission is to encourage those who have gone through the rubble of child abuse and poor health to rebuild a life that is thriving and not just surviving.

Back To School Homework Assignment for Parents

Back To School Homework Assignment for Parents

I know I am different. I am not normal, traditional, or conventional. Not in my career, how I act, how I parent, my marriage, my health care practices, and how I live overall.

I guess I have always been different. When I was in my teens and in high school it’s not so enjoyable being different, you get picked on, talked about, and or you just don’t feel like you belong. Later in life you can see the irony of life when those who picked on you, you no longer feel angry at but you feel sorry for how their lives have turned out.

In your 20s you have a choice to embrace your uniqueness or not. Some of us have to wait until our 30s to grow up and grow into a better person. Some of us our 40s and 50s and I have even seen some amazing transformations of family and friends in their 50s and 60s.

Being all you can be involves finding what it is you love, working on yourself, and finding and honing the gifts and tools God gave you.

We send our children to school for an education but educational system is missing some fundamentals of personal development and grooming our children for success. Schools focus on reading, writing and arithmetic with add ons of arts, music, and sports if funding is good at that school.

I had great loving parents but they didn’t know how to GROOM me for success. They taught me about hard work ethic, which I am grateful for but how to direct that work ethic into healthy positive things I had to learn later in life.

Recently a close friend told me, “I thought I was a retard until I was a sophomore in High School. I struggled and even failed the second grade. I was told I was stupid and retarded by trusted adults in my life so I believed it. Then one day a science professor saw something in me that changed my life. He saw how much I was interested in the subject matter, challenged me, encouraged me and from then on my life changed and I was actually smart.”

This friend later found out that his IQ testing was that of a genius. Today my friend is in a great marriage, has a high level career earning more than 90% of his former high school classmates.  Can you imagine if this one teacher hadn’t seen the potential in my friend? What would he be doing today?

PARENTS 1st HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
So as our children go back to school over the next couple of weeks I have a homework assignment for all my parents out there. I encourage you to encourage them 10 times or more a day. “Great job setting the table.” ” I really like how you have been finishing your homework on time.” ” I am proud to see you reading so much.” “Way to go being ready for school on time.”

If you are not used to this type of language or you think that this type of encouragement will cause your children to not be HUMBLE, well get over it. Studies have proven it is much easier to motivate children with positive reinforcement then negative.

PARENTS 2nd HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT
And your second homework assignment is to encourage your child’s teacher. They have a really challenging and difficult job. They in most cases are doing the best with what they have to work with. They are for the most part underpaid and overworked. Send your child’s teacher notes of encouragement, positive reinforcement, or even ask them how can I best help you by helping my child at home. You might get some good feedback from a person who spends 30 hours a week with your child.

My intention for this post was different when I started but I think if we all can just remember to ENCOURAGE in every environment we are in with people or even online, we could see more positive and productive changes in the world. Just my 2 cents.

Could Zyto Compass Be The Answer to Your Parenting Needs?

By | Mommy Tips, Total Wellness, Total Wellness Mom | One Comment

Parenting is tough. I didn’t grow up with my brother and sister. I was my mom’s only child. I did babysit but I have to admit I wasn’t that good. It was exhausting to me and I used to count the minutes until the parents got home.

Then I had kids and I really understood what EXHAUSTED meant.  Parenting isn’t easy if you want to do a good job. It takes Physical Stamina, Mental Clarity, and a whole lot of Holy Spirit Help.

Becoming frustrated and even ANGRY at our children can become a daily experience. Especially for moms with the stress of being at home by themselves with the kids all day (in my opinion the hardest working job there is — is STAY AT HOME MOM).

You can kind of go batty. I was really distressed when I heard about a mom screaming and swearing at her kid every morning. At first I was shocked but then I thought about it and realized this is a single mom who has no one to help her no one to talk to, NO BREAK, no peace… I can’t judge. I know what a difficult day with lack of sleep does to my mood… sadly so does my family.

Anger, frustration, moodiness they all can have a nutritional imbalance. Lack of B Vitamins can not only throw our energy down the drain but can cause our hormones to be whacky. Eating sugar daily, not eating regularly, or overeating can cause blood sugar imbalances that translate to a DRAGON like behavior. Mineral deficiency can cause havoc on the body but also our energy and moods. And constipation… well if you are constipated let’s just say you will most likely have a crappy attitude because of all those toxins stuck in your body.

zyto compass

It’s important to see where your body is out of balance. I like to use my ZYTO COMPASS to see where I am at in my health or my family’s health.

Lastly I just wanted to share about being an ANGRY MOM. This came in my inbox from my friend and Mommy Blogger, the Thriving Mom. It’s worth a read if you struggle with parenting, feel alone sometimes, or just need some encouragement: http://thethrivingmom.com/are-you-an-angry-mom/

You are not in this alone. God’s got your back and we are praying for you.

The Total Wellness Doc’s 3 Year Anniversary

By | Total Wellness | No Comments

3 year anniversary

It’s my 3 year Blogging Anniversary this month. WOW… since July 2011 I have consistently provided weekly blog posts. I have posted over 330 blogs posts. There is Information, Education, Inspiration, Encouragement, Personal Stories, and Motivation in these writings. The cool thing about having a blog type website is that your content stays there forever and people can get help years from the time you shared.

Most of my readers know by now that I am not about perfectionism and as a busy momma sometimes I put things out without fully proofing them, so you will have to forgive any spelling or grammar errors. You may also know that I share my real life and my faith here and on my Facebook pages.

Recently I was “spoken to” by family about asking my readers to pray for my grandmother who broke her hip. My readers were awesome. They immediately started praying and I know that prayers make a difference but unfortunately it alerted our extended family overseas and calls from Italy came pouring in to see how my grandmother was doing before they officially got a progress report… oops. I will need to apologize for that one.

Informational
I have shared informational posts about clinical experiences with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Scoliosis and more like this post. I love getting this technique myself. It is amazing for my health and well being. Since I moved to Florida I now need to train a local therapist. I will be teaching Raindrop Training for Massage Therapists in late August early September here in Crestview Florida. Check our Events page for more details TBA soon.

Educational
I have shared educational how to posts like this one about cleansing and how to use the Cleansing Trio. I love this cleanse because it’s easy and works… for some it may take a few months but with such a gentle cleanse it’s worth it!

Inspirational
I want my readers to be inspired. We have a MOMS of FAITH blog almost every month. Women who have personally inspired me through their lives and motherhood. You do not want to miss these posts and their incredible stories like this.

Encouraging
A majority of my readers are other moms and grandmoms trying to survive the chaos of life. I like to put out Encouraging Infographics on my Facebook page and posts on my blog. I have several Mommy Survival pieces that are tips that have helped me survive these past 3 years.

Personal
Some of my blogs are quite personal but I share because I know my experiences can help others. Like my struggles with infertility and having 3 miscarriages, just this week a woman who just had a miscarriage was encouraged by this post.

I am very, very grateful for the opportunity to help others through my writing.  I know this has been God’s direction for my life for a long, long time. There are many rewards to writing a blog, but what I have learned is that blogging can’t be all about what I want to say but rather what my audience wants to hear. Some of my blogs get lots of likes and rave reviews and others well… nothing.

So here is my question to you… what do you want to learn about or be educated on?  Do you like an occasional Inspirational, Encouraging or Motivational blog post? Is my personal stuff too personal for you?

Please share with me. I really want to make my website something that helps you and others but I can’t unless I know what does.

Lastly I want to thank my teachers, counselors and partners in blogging who without them I would not be able to get this content to you.

First Dani Johnson who taught me to be a better person to love people and serve them well.

To Sandi Krakowski who taught me about the online world and how to serve and love people here.

To Dr. Lavonne Atnip who held my hand and counseled me through difficult times, kicked me in the butt when I needed it, and showed me how a woman can be a mother, wife and business owner with God’s principles and help. I am blessed to have put some programs together with her… check out this month’s Special Deals… this content will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

Claudia Looi, my online Marketing Director who continues to help me research and find valuable content that my audience wants as well as grow our following.

Bethany Looi, our Senior Online Virtual Assistant who started working with us when she was just 16 years old. She has always maintained the highest standard of professionalism and at 19 we consider her the Most Valuable Helper of getting the content that we write looking fantastic on our website.

So Happy Anniversary to our Staff, Team Members, Mentors, and all our Readers who take what we write and use pieces and parts of it to uplift and CHANGE their LIVES.

I pray for your Health & Happiness. And I lastly want to remind you to NEVER EVER GIVE UP.

Ancient Einkorn: Hybrid Grains, GMOs and Chemicals: A Book Summary and Sharing of Thoughts

Ancient Einkorn

By: Claudia Looi

“Let’s not wonder what is happening but be part of making things happen” was the last sentence I read in Dr. D. Gary Young’s latest book, Ancient Einkorn, Today’s Staff of Life: Hybrid Grains, GMOs and Chemicals, Truth or Consequences.

In this book Dr. Gary, Young Living Essential Oils’ founder
• Takes us through his quest to find the ancient einkorn
• Shows the decline of nutrition
• Explains what is modern hybrid wheat
• Enlightens us on gluten
• Shows the importance of enzymes
• Teaches the many diseases and disorders triggered by hybrid gluten
• Explains what the silent killers are
• Takes us through the road to recovery and a healthy life

We all know that to understand ones passion we have to trace it to their experiences and upbringing. Dr. Young grew up in a small cabin without running water or electricity. His family lived in the harsh mountains near Challis Idaho. By the age of 12 his job was to drive a team of horses to cut the wheat and oats his father grew in the farm. They worked hard and ate off the produce of the land.

Two early driving forces that set him searching for answers to recovery and a healthy life were-
1. His mother’s constant battle with aches, pain, fatigue, depression and weight gain.
2. An accident that left him in a wheelchair, drugged and suicidal.

Why Einkorn?

Dr. Gary became curious about einkorn since 1990 when he stumbled upon a small farm in Hunza Land in Pakistan.

While attending Cairo University from 1991 to 1994, Dr. Young was fascinated with the reliefs and hieroglyphs on the walls. This fascination led him to the discovery of an Egyptian hieroglyph showing grain being harvested. These grains reminded him of how wheat looked like when he was a young boy.

The wheat he remembered were at least 38 to 42 inches tall just like the hieroglyph. But as a young adult the wheat he saw was only 14 to 18 inches. That perked his curiosity.

Were the constant aches and pains, depression, fatigue and weight gain his mother faced due to the type of grain she ate? What happened to those tall plants he remembered making grain teepees out of with his siblings?

What is einkorn?
According to Dr. Gary, einkorn is considered the ancient grain or the original wheat of man. Its botanical name is Triticum monococcum. The stocks are long and slender, and the kernels are oblong and flat and protected by a strong husk that clings to the kernels. It grows to about 4.5 to 5 feet tall.

Today’s common wheat only grows to 16 inches. The big difference is modern (dwarf) wheat has 42 chromosomes and einkorn has 1 genome and 14 chromosomes. It has the simplest genetic code and is easily grown organically in mountainous areas even in poor soil conditions.

It has low glycemic index, low gluten levels, two and half times richer in protein than commercial wheat, three times higher antioxidant, twice the vitamin A content of modern wheat, three to four times more beta carotene, four to five times more riboflavin, easily digested and is an ancient mineral-and-vitamin dense grain.

In ancient times farmers let the plants grow through stages of maturity. This process helped retain the plants natural enzymes, which made it easy to digest. These days, farmers harvest wheat according to their plans and convenience not Mother Nature’s plans.  Dr. Gary compared it to vine-ripened tomato and non-vine-ripened tomato.

“The non-vine-ripened tomato that tastes like cardboard and has a nutritional value of an egg crate.”

The decline in nutrition is not a new thing. It started about 2,000 years ago but the Industrial Age led to extensive hybridization, usage of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers on wheat and other grains. With that came grains depleted of enzymes that are important for digestion.

Drastic changes happened when Dr. Norman Borlaug created a wheat that increased production yield and was resistant to wheat fungus called rust.

The outcome of hybridized and genetically engineered grains-

Many are suffering from symptoms of wheat gluten intolerance like joint pains, weak immune system, digestive problems, celiac disease, fibromyalgia, gastritis, schizophrenia, autism, TDD and ANS disorders, bipolar, manic depression and many more chronic pains and dis-eases.

Even animals are showing similar symptoms.

One shocking result shows that modern wheat can turn into glucose three times faster than white sugar.

It also creates an acid condition and inflammation in the body.

It is highly addictive and causes cravings, which lead to problems like being overweight and obesity. In the book, Dr. Gary quoted Dr. William Davis, author of Wheat Belly about triathletes getting fat too even when they workout and eat fairly healthy.

What is gluten and why do you need gluten?

A direct quote from the book:
I don’t think that God would create nutritious grains, seeds, grasses, and other similar foods and not expect man to eat them; and surely He knew that through time, nature would crossbreed and make natural and nutritious variations of these foods as well.

The thing is, did God expect man to create unnatural crossbreeding in a lab?

Three important facts I learned from this book about gluten
• We are created to digest natural wild grasses like einkorn with 14 chromosomes
• The body may have extreme difficulty digesting and recognizing the hybridized 42-chromosome man-made wheat especially for those suffering from gluten sensitivity
• Not all gluten is toxic and bad, we need to know the difference

Gluten from man-made 42-chromosome wheat may be incompatible with the human body and may contribute to autoimmune diseases, interfere with the absorption of other nutrients, trigger gluten intolerance and a host of other problems related to sensitivity to gluten.

Ancient Einkorn

Food for thought from the book about gluten:

We cannot blame wheat gluten for the rapid increase of autism, but it is probably a contributing factor. (Page 61)

Enzymes deficiencies are a growing problem every day and, I believe, are another cause of gluten intolerance and celiac disease. (Page 77)

But what is important is that after we look at the evidence, study the science, and listen to other people, we make our own decision about what we feel is right for us, not what everyone else thinks is right for us. Experiment and if something works, then do it, irrespective of what science tells you; and if it continues to work, then it must be right for you. (Page 63)

Page 63’s statement is freeing… we are all built differently with different body types, blood groups and needs. Listen to your body and be in tune with your body. It doesn’t matter what age group you are in, taking care of our body with a healthier diet is essential for total wellness.

That will also include:
• Learning to read the ingredients on the label of the food you purchase
• Learning the difference between hybrid gluten and natural gluten
• Understanding our digestion processes and immunity
• Not all health foods in health food stores are chemical free and nutritious
• Staying away as much as possible from processed food, fat and sugar-laden gluten-free food, additives, colorants, dyes, unnatural ingredients, toxic chemicals, food stabilizers and food preservatives.
• Learning the importance of enzymes and why we cannot live without enzymes
• Not all gluten-free products are good for you
• Sugar-free doesn’t mean it is good for you because you may be consuming toxic artificial sweeteners
• The power of liver and gall bladder cleansing, taking good enzymes and enzyme supplementation and probiotics

Could your aching joints, headaches, foggy thinking, allergies, food sensitivities, dizziness, dragging feeling in the morning, candida problems, psoriasis, PMS, infertility, digestive issues, inflammation, anxiety, depression, mood swings, ADHD, constant tiredness, diabetes, fibromyalgia and chronic pains caused by the food you eat or don’t eat?

I learned that an average senior American citizen is polluted with over 700 synthetic chemicals and heavy metals. These chemicals and heavy metals are from household cleaning detergents, personal care products, air pollutants, pesticides, fertilizers, canned foods, recirculated airline air, prescription and over the counter drugs and food we prepare at home and eat at our favorite restaurants.

They are the silent killers!

Lots of important health nuggets are found Dr. Gary Young’s latest book.  I highly recommend this book if you are looking for ways to learn about wheat, gluten, enzyme and total wellness.

Now you can try two einkorn products at home:

Thoughts from Claudia Looi, the content writer at www.travelwritingpro.com

I am more convinced than ever that “we are what we eat” and our food is too processed and refined. I am allergic to American corn but was not allergic to corn when I ate it in Ecuador. My throat hurts and itches every time I eat breaded chicken nuggets, breaded shrimp or anything that has corn and wheat. Is there a relation between your discomfort/pain and the food you eat?

Total Wellness: What’s Your Why?

By | Total Wellness, Videos | One Comment

Why are you reading this? I mean it. Why do you take the time to read my blogs and newsletters? Maybe we are friends and you want to see what’s going on in my life. Maybe you love Natural Health and want to learn some of the latest ways to stay healthy. Whatever your reason, I don’t mind. I am just hopeful that the information gets to someone who will read it and benefit from it. See I have a strong passion for seeing lives changed and I know that the content I provide can do that IF the recipient applies it.

That is where the catch is. We can have a head full of knowledge and never apply it. We can Talk the Talk but unless we Walk the Walk nothing will change. Don’t think that if I rub this essential oil on everyday my life will be different and I will be healthy. It’s not that simple. Total Wellness is a journey. One that will stretch us in ways we never thought possible. But wow is it awesome!

When we get on the road to Total Wellness it’s easy at first to be excited but soon we will find the road is rough, hilly, and just hard to walk. We may need to take a rest, we may get stuck in a rut, we may start going the wrong way or even backwards, but if our desire to be healthy and have Optimal Wellness in our lives is strong enough, we can and will accomplish our goals.

Below is a special video I made for you that will help you on your road to Total Wellness. I would love to know what your Total Wellness Why is if you feel like sharing in the comment section below or over on my Facebook page.

For your Greatest Good,

Creative Fundraising With Young Living: Fundraiser for Payton

By | Essential Oils, Total Wellness | No Comments

creative fundraising with young living

I want to give a shout out to my friend and colleague Christi Daugherty. Christi is a wonderful person and friend and I am so proud of her on how she is handling a very stressful time in her life. Her son Payton was just recently diagnosed with a very serious condition in which he will be needing surgery several states away.

The family is blessed to have insurance but not with extra funds for travel and lodging for that long of a stay. She, in her resourcefulness, put up a page to help raise money but at the same time staying in her mission of health. Please visit her page to learn more and donate if you feel led to: http://misschristi.com/fundraiser/
So many times when someone is ill and doesn’t have insurance or the funds for treatments their friends and family resort to fundraisers including Spaghetti Dinners, Lotteries, Silent Auctions, etc.  Those things are fine but they usually will raise money only for a short period of time.  Many cancer patients and those struggling with CHRONIC DISEASE without insurance will usually have some lifelong financial struggles. What if there was a fundraiser that could provide income for a person for years or decades? I believe there is.

Every time I see one of these fundraisers I think what if we could start a Young Living Home Business for this person. Instead of a Spaghetti Dinner it’s a GIANT Young Living Introduction Party or PARTIES… There are still some Silent Auctions, Giveaways etc. but at the event everyone learns about some Young Living products and has 3 opportunities.

1) Purchase something at Retail and the fundraiser recipient will receive the 24% commission.

2) Get a Wholesale Membership account with the Premium Start Living Kit and those who order get over $300 worth of product for $150 and the recipient will earn $50 from that purchase.

3) Get a Membership and Enroll in the Essential Rewards. Those who want to help their friend or family member can choose some health products they personally can use or they want to donate to the recipient every month and the recipient will earn anywhere between 8-25% of the orders.

I mean seriously if you think of the hundreds of people who usually want to support their friend if only a dozen of them fell in love with Young Living, got some results from the products, used them every month like option #3 that could mean more than a couple hundred dollars MONTHLY for the fundraiser recipient. If 40 or more ordered Young Living consistently every month that could mean up to $1000 of extra monthly income.

My point is that Young Living has health products that can help a person struggling with chronic illness and they have an income opportunity to pay for their needed therapies. I strongly believe we need to open up our minds to this process of helping people more than a day, a week or several months but for a lifetime. I believe if structured correcting and presented correctly Young Living could be an answer to financial challenges and health challenges.

Let me know what you think.

Wellness Inspiration From People I Met at Convention

By | Total Wellness | No Comments

After a week away with my husband and 9000 other health seeking, positive people I am processing all that I learned and am continuing to learn. I made a conscious choice to stay away from processed foods, gluten, and heavy foods during Convention. I ate light, had shakes, Slique Bars and about 6-8 oz. of NingXia Red a day plus a few hits of NingXia Nitro.

14-16 hour days made me tired but I seemed to have much more energy than I ever thought possible for the amount of information, energy, and processing we all did. Among it all we prayed daily for direction, God moments, and discernment as we choose what to do, who to see, and what to learn.

At an event like that you can’t do everything, so you must choose. One day I was very tired and had another 10 hours left to my very full 16 hour day. But God gave me a nudge to go visit this certain table. I did and WOW was I blessed. I got to see some friends, a woman from my church, got to bless two women with simple things God told me to give them, and the highlight getting to rub Teri Secrest’s feet.

This woman has always been a mentor in business for me. Her story is compelling and her life is a true testament to Christian leadership. She is among 1% of women earners in America today and her presence and work span the globe.

She blessed me with her new book which I started and finished on the planes coming home. Excellent information, resources, strategic steps on how to be a stunning success in Network Marketing. You can pick it up at http://terisecrest.com/books/.

There were many other God moments but I feel like God told me that I really need to take a more detailed look at my food choices based on three conversations I had during this week.

The first conversation happened when I got off the plane and met new friends mother and daughter Lisa Reader and Casey Reader Patterson. Here is Casey’s pictures- before she changed her diet and after.

Caseybefore Caseyafter

She has had some miraculous changes in her health due to the food changes she made and of course God. Visit her blog at http://www.caseylynnpatterson.blogspot.com/2014/05/whats-for-breakfast.html.

Next I had a chance encounter with my Amish friend and Platinum leader in Young Living Melvin Peachy. Melvin’s business story is pretty remarkable and I will share another time, but seeing him and his wife they looked 10 years younger to me. “What are you doing I asked?” He told me about a certain eating protocol he was doing and some other things he had taken control of in his health.

Lastly on the ride home to Pensacola I met a great woman husband team from my church the Trembley’s who also have a pretty remarkable health journey that started 14 years ago with fasting, prayer, and specific health regimens to regain their health.

The last night of Convention I went out to a Mexican restaurant and had a heavy meal and a ton of corn chips. Although the food was above par I ended up with a hurting belly and lots of gas before the dinner was over. I wasn’t the only one.

My husband with Giant Burrito… only 1/4 was eaten but still

So to me all those experiences were not coincidences but God’s divine planning. Waking me up to some things that not only can benefit me but all my readers as well.

It’s my promise to bring some of this powerful information across to you through our blog and newsletter over the next eight weeks of summer. Stories of inspiration, health challenges overcome, redemption, grace, and much more. I want you to be inspired and renewed like I have been. And it is my hope that God will lay vision for your life and health in the coming weeks.

God bless your success,

Mary Starr Carter

How to Find the Best Deals for Summer Vacations

By: Claudia Looi

“Lost $416!” Monitoring air ticket prices is almost like the stock market. I don’t get it right all the time when it comes to purchasing airline tickets. Have you? My husband and daughter said, “Just go make more money and recover from the losses!”

You see I had been looking at ways to get the cheapest and best airfares to St. Petersburg Russia with a stopover at a European city. Icelandair came into the radar during that research with a price of $574 per person. Not bad because Lufthansa and some of the American carriers were offering over $1,000 without any free stopovers.

On a busy content writing day while doing research and writing for a client on Tips to Buying One Way Tickets to Europe the price on Icelandair was $470 from Boston to St. Petersburg. That was an incredible deal and I thought we might have to travel from New York City to Boston to save a few dollars. Curious, I checked for pricing from New York City and it was $470 too.

I patted myself on the back and said good job. The air miles we accumulated will cover three tickets instead of two. Which means for a family of four we would pay $470 for airfares from New York City to St. Petersburg Russia with a stopover in Iceland. St. Petersburg is our final destination in Europe. We will start our overland tour from Russia through Mongolia and China.

Did I take advantage of the price? Unfortunately no. Why? I was procrastinating and ended with a $574 ticket per person two weeks later.

If you are like me – you love sweet deals for leisure and pleasure. The question is where and how to find the best deals for summer vacations. Here are 4 ways that helped me save money:

One: Credit cards reward points
Credit cards can be your tool to saving money if you pay off every month without owing a penny. When the kids were little we had a ToysRUs credit card for free toys. Now we use cards that offer “no hassle miles” rewards.

Capital One Venture One card has no annual fee; no foreign transaction fees and you earn 1 ½ miles per dollar on every purchase. You can use the points to fly with any airline, stay at any hotel, any time. When you open a new account you immediately earn 20,000 bonus miles. Check it out here.

The Business Gold Card from American Express OPEN offers up to 75,000 Membership Rewards points redeemable for up to $750 in gift cards at select stores after you spend $2,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership.

You get 3 points on airfare purchased directly from airlines, 2 points on purchase for advertising in select media, shipping, gas and more and 1 point on other purchases. Points can be used for flights, hotels and vacation packages through americanexpress.com/travel and there are no blackout dates or seat restrictions.

There is an annual fee after the first year. American Express has a variety of credit cards. Find out more here.

We have used airline miles from American carriers for air tickets and hotels. And credit card reward points for airline tickets. Do your homework and find out which card suits your needs.

Two: Sign up for alerts and newsletters
I subscribe to a few alerts and newsletters from various travel websites. Travelzoo.com, airfarewatchdog.com and booking.com are three of my favorites.

For example, airfarewatchdog.com sent me an email this week with a list of best airfare deals from New York City. I’ve been thinking about going to Bermuda and the fares have been favorable for the last few weeks. Look at this:

Hamilton, Bermuda on American Airlines is $339 per person round trip. That is an amazing deal. If you are thinking of going to Manila Philippines, it is $931 per person on China Southern Airlines.

Travelzoo.com sends me weekly emails on the best cruise, flight, show, hotel, dining, and tour deals from different travel companies to anywhere around the world. This week I received a few amazing deals.

This looks like a really sweet deal for someone living in Vancouver or Northwest United States (taken from Travelzoo.com):

Norwegian Cruise Line’s last-minute 7 nights Alaska cruise offered by cruise.com. We love Norwegian and I would grab this deal immediately if I had no prior tour arrangements. Imagine $299 per person for an oceanview cabin? I’m sure you have seen deals like this but when you get to the site, they are usually higher than advertised!

I’ve used and subscribed to Travelzoo.com since their first email over a decade ago, and their deals are genuine. Since this is a last minute deal, it means you have to be flexible, act fast and are able to travel on the dates given.

To prove this is genuine here is a screenshot of the deal from cruise.com. It was available at the time of writing:

The Norwegian Sun takes you from Whittier Alaska to Juneau, Sawyer Glacier, Skagway, Ketchikan and Vancouver.

If you don’t like cruises, in the same email was a 4 nights stay at the Jewel Dunn’s River Beach Resort and Spa with round trip airfare for $629 per person. You save 65% in this all-inclusive seaside resort in Jamaica. Yes! Jamaica and all inclusive means all meals are included. (From CheapCaribbean.com)

4

Three: Drive or fly
For those who prefer to travel locally there are ways to find out if driving or flying is cheaper. All you need is the right tool. TravelMath.com’s cost to drive or fly tool will show you how. For families in Washington DC wanting a summer vacation at a Miami beach or a Miami family wanting to visit Washington DC, all you need is to type in these cities here.

You will get a fly or drive score depending on the number of people in your family. A lower score means it is cheaper. This is an example for a family of four from Washington DC to Miami:

This score takes into consideration time spent on the road, wear and tear of your vehicle, fuel efficiency and more.

The score changes if there are only three people in the family. It is almost the same price for driving and flying.

6

Four: Hotel or apartment rentals
I love hotels but when it comes to saving money for a large family, renting an apartment is the way to go. Prior to traveling to South America, I had only stayed in hotels while traveling. I remember needing to get two rooms for our summer vacation in London when the kids were 11 and 8 in 2006.

Now with peer-to-peer rentals and the share economy concept, vacationers are able to save more money on accommodation. You can check out airbnb.com, booking.com and nyhabitat.com. Airbnb.com is our favorite. We have used all three while traveling in South America and now in New York City.

NYhabitat.com caters to New York City, Paris and London apartments only. Bookings.com has a variety of hotels, apartments and bed and breakfast places around the world. AirBnB.com is available worldwide and has shared rooms, private rooms or the entire place for rental.

We have rented a houseboat in Brooklyn through AirBnB.com for two weeks. That was one of the greatest experiences in New York City. You can read it here. For a little over $1600 our family of four stayed for 13 nights in the houseboat. That is around $400 per person for 2 weeks or $31 per night in New York City!

While writing this article, I found an apartment at the Miami Beach for eight nights that accommodates 8 with free parking, a fully equipped kitchen, free WiFi, washer and dryer, air conditioning and more for $1672 through AirBnB.com.

Multi-generational families, friends or business associates can get together for eight nights at the beach for $209 per person ($26 per night per person). If you cook all your meals in the apartment you’ll save more.

Screenshot taken from AirBnB.com.

These are just some of the ways I get my savings for summer vacations and traveling around the world. I have a lot more!

Think you can’t take a summer vacation? With research, flexibility and an open mind, you may just find the best deal and enjoy the best summer vacation the whole family will talk about in years to come. Don’t forget to read our eBook on Your Guide to Staying Healthy While Traveling with Essential Oils (currently in the eBook bundle sale- 4 eBooks for $9.97)

And that’s the wonderful thing about family travel: it provides you with experiences that will remain locked forever in the scar tissue of your mind.  ~Dave Barry

Women of Faith: What I Learned From My Aunt Linda

By | Total Wellness | 2 Comments

women of faith Aunt Linda

“Aunt Linda died this morning”, my mom said on the phone. What? My mind stopped. I couldn’t believe it. No not this soon. I am heartbroken. “You know there would be no you without Aunt Linda, she is the one who introduced me and your dad”. 10 minutes later my dad calls to tell me the same sad news and later says, “You know if it weren’t for Aunt Linda I would have never met your mom and we wouldn’t have had you.” So I guess I owe my life to Aunt Linda LOL!

Linda Parmley Cole was a tough no nonsense kind of person that I admired who wasn’t my Aunt but my 1st Cousin. My dad’s brother, her father was so much older than him that my Aunt Linda and Dad grew up like brother and sister. She didn’t take any BS and said what she thought. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in February of this year and is gone 3 months later.

women of faith aunt linda

Ironically last night I had a dream I was speaking at her Celebration of Life. It was a Celebration of Life rather than a Eulogy because that is how Aunt Linda lived. If I were speaking I think I would share the following examples and lessons I learned from my Aunt Linda.

1) Family First – I remember when I first heard Linda’s husband Vern talk about our purpose in life “to have and raise kids.” I was a single feminist then and it wasn’t until I had my own kids that I would understand that to be true. Linda and Vern’s life is a great example of a close knit family. They work together and live within minutes of each other. I would eventually mimic that living next door to my mom and grandparents for 7 years and now my husband’s parents. There is a real joy in being close to family.

2) Work Ethic – Linda had one of the strongest work ethics of anyone I ever knew. She was an extremely valuable resource to her company Victory Packaging. A company that when they found out she was sick made every effort to help her letting her work from home, flying her family to California so they could participate in a ½ marathon the company sponsored for Linda.

3) Jokes – Linda was a lover of jokes. When the internet and email came into her life I think she was a little addicted to her email and sending jokes. She loved what she loved and probably made a lot of people laugh with all her Forwards of Jokes. It’s a Parmley trait. Her uncle Starr (my dad) loves jokes too and always made his students submit a joke for extra credit on their tests.

4) No Grudges – Although I don’t know for true I think Linda was the type of person who let things go. She embraced her husband’s children from his first marriage and loved my mom even when my dad and her got divorced. Although I can’t say the rest of my dad’s ex-wives have fared as well with that no grudges thing…

5) Delegate Cooking – I learned this from Linda too. She didn’t cook… I mean she could open a can of soup, make toast and cook on celebrations but she didn’t cook. You would always find her and Vern several nights a week out to dinner, and I always remember seeing her and Vern through the window at the Foursome diner when I would drive by on Friday nights. It seemed like every Friday night there they were. I took this skill to heart and delegated my Aunt Shirley to cook for us a night a week and instilled a Friday night eat out plan in my own house.

6) Celebrate Celebrate – I always remember Aunt Linda’s house at Christmas time and allllll those presents under the tree. I think she loved the holiday and celebrating with her kids and later grandkids. I also think having Linda at a party made it a good one. When she wasn’t at a family reunion or party she was missed.

Every Tuesday night they had an Open House at their home where friends, neighbors and Aunt Shirley would come to visit. Everybody loved it and I have to admit I might implement that fun social gathering at my home too when my kids are a little older.

7) Stay Active – My Aunt Linda was 60 something when she passed. Compared to a lot of women her age, she was in good shape. She was still playing softball last summer and I would guess might have played better than some girls 20 years younger than her. She would go and see the Chiropractor when she needed it, get massages, and come see me for Raindrop Therapies. She also did sun therapy… yes tanning beds but I really think it helped to keep her so healthy this long. I think Vitamin D levels are a pivotal part of good health.

8) Love Your Grandkids – She loved her grandchildren. She loved taking them to breakfast, watching them, buying them gifts for their birthdays and yes spoiling them.  My mom took some good lessons from Aunt Linda and spoils my children just like her.

9) Clean Out Your Laundry Vent – Every time I do the laundry I hear my mom’s voice… clean out that Laundry Vent Remember Aunt Linda had a fire from not cleaning out her vent. So I clean out that Laundry Vent every time and think of Aunt Linda. (My mom now says she doesn’t know if that was Aunt Linda or another Aunt, but regardless I like the fact that I will always think of Aunt Linda when I clean the Laundry Vent.)

10) Love God – I live in a culture now here in the South where there is a church on every corner but Loving God and Loving People is sometimes forgotten. Linda wasn’t a churchy, Jesus preaching person but she loved God. Through how she lived her life I know without a doubt where my Aunt Linda is now… she is in Heaven. This is why I consider my Aunt Linda a Woman of Faith. She Loved God and People.

There are many of us who are heartbroken right now with the loss of Aunt Linda but we can hold on to the happiness that she is with Jesus now… Probably making Him laugh by telling Him a joke.

Ways to Create Freedom in Your Life

By | Total Wellness | One Comment

JoshieWater

Have you ever wished you had more freedom in your life? More vacation days, more time with your family, more flexibility on where you live… or maybe you have flexibility and freedom but don’t have the money to enjoy it.

IMG_20140527_135314_529

Freedom to me means having some control over my time, energy, and resources. It means not being a slave to a corporation, my own business, or my financial situation.  It means spending quality time with my family every day and visiting my extended family more than once a year. It means easily investing in the lives of others whether that is a divorced single mom, a particular cause or ministry I am passionate about, and being able to give enough money and or time to make a real difference.

Simmons family

This week some of my good friends and Young Living colleagues came down from NY for a week. We have been having a ball hanging out, making delicious meals fresh from the garden and talking about their future. (The pictures above are from our fun day at the beach.)

See, my colleagues Bryon and Mary Simmons have been an associate in my Young Living business since 2005 and a user of Young Living Essential Oils for several years prior to that. In the past 8 years this couple had 2 children, had a devastating house fire, rebuilt another home, dealt with some health crises, became a Deacon in their church, spent more than 3 weeks a year visiting family, and participating in outreach and mission trips. They did all this and spent a few hours every week creating a Young Living business. They have gotten a commission check every month even when there were times when they couldn’t work in their business for weeks and even months.

The few hours a week they spent in Young Living created a current commission of $300-$500 a month, the ability to write off portions of their vacations with family, and other awesome tax write offs. They recently decided that they are determined to grow their Young Living business and create significant income over $5,000 a month in the next few years so that they can have more FREEDOM in their life.

Although I am not allowed to legally make claims or predictions I KNOW THEY CAN DO IT. They can achieve their goals, dreams and get the freedom they want because they have the right vehicle and team to do it.

So now I want to ask you. Are you ready for more freedom in your life? Young Living Essential Oils can be the vehicle to help you get there. Are you ready to work with a 20 year old company with an established track record and highest client loyalty in the industry?

The first step is to become a member in our Young Living Team. The cost of that is only $150 includes over $300 of health promoting essential oils, products and training. For those of you who are serious about creating FREEDOM in your life like myself and other associates including Mary Simmons then you will upgrade to Health Investor and be required to purchase and or retail $100 dollars worth of Young Living products per month.

I don’t want to mislead anyone. Creating FREEDOM will cost you money, time, and energy. It will take learning new skills, like time management, money management, and home business development.

And I don’t want to mislead you to believe that I take just anyone on my team. We love everyone but only those who are serious about helping others, are coachable, can follow a proven system, and are self motivated get to work with myself or other top leaders.

My team members call me the nicest Drill Sargent they ever knew. I require high integrity and constant personal and professional development of the members I work with. But my team members will also tell you I am one of the most generous leaders they have ever met. I am honest, caring, and determined to help you succeed.

One of the programs I have found to help my team members succeed is Dani Johnson’s First Steps to Success Training. I will be taking a refresher class in July in San Antonio Texas. If you are serious about creating more freedom in your life then I am going to suggest 2 things.

1. Get started with your Premium Start Living Kit and Young Living Membership today with this link. Get your membership before June 1st and get this cool new Pocket Desk Reference a $20 value FREE.

2. Then consider joining me in San Antonio Texas July 12-14th at First Steps to Success Training.

If you have more questions or maybe would like to interview with myself or one of our team members to see if our Young Living home business is a right fit for you then email us at info@starrhealth.com and request an interview for an associate position.

The Power of Prayer, Praise and Potty Training

By | Total Wellness, Total Wellness Mom | One Comment

potty training

My life has been radically blessed in the last 25 days. Not only have I achieved a 14 year goal in my career but my 4 year old son has finally become Potty Trained.

When you have a baby you expect the next 2 years of your life to be spent cleaning up dirty diapers and poopy messes, but I didn’t realize I would be spending an additional 2 years after that in poopy detail too. I will spare you all the grossness but you can imagine my son is a big healthy eater who is very regular but never went in the toilet. I am very, very grateful for Young Living’s Thieves Cleaner which I needed to use just about daily.

But all that changed about 2 weeks ago when all of a sudden my son was potty trained. On further analysis I realize that it wasn’t all of a sudden and that there were some key things that led to his change of heart. I also realize that some of these same principals can be applied to other difficult situations in our lives too.

So here is my list of Tips for Potty Training and Life:

1) Expectations – Joshua was my first child so I really didn’t know what to expect so I didn’t set any expectations until recently. I also was told “boys” take longer to potty train and I guess I set that in my mind as an expectation.

2) Create Urgency – Because both my husband and I work from home and have a decent income that we could “afford” spending money on diapers there was no urgency to get him out of them. Many moms who I talked to in different financial and work situations had their kids potty trained by 2 years old.

3) Consistency – I admit I wasn’t consistent myself in getting my son potty trained. I would “train” one day and then not the next. Or one week and then let it go the next. I am sure he was a bit confused too with that kind of schedule.

Also downstairs he had a small portable potty but then upstairs he had a little potty seat that goes over the big potty. I found both of these a hassle to clean and they were just gross. So literally the day after I got rid of them he started being fully potty trained.

4) PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE – After reading this quote by Michelle Duggar, mom of the famous 19 Kids and Counting in her discussion about changing and molding a child’s good behavior “praise 10 times more than you correct”.

So I started doing that in a lot of things with my son and wow it really works. When he did have an accident I would do the clean up, make him help clean up and take him out of “fun” for at least 10 minutes so he understood this wasn’t good behavior. I didn’t use words like BAD BOY but rather kept saying where do we go pee pee and poopy on the potty… when you do this it’s no FUN and lots of work for MOMMY which is no FUN…

A side note on this one… some parents told me they spanked their kids when they messed their pants and that seemed to correct the behavior. The reason I didn’t go down that path fully is because I once had a patient who was chronically constipated her whole life. After doing some serious Neuro Emotional work with another doc friend of mine we found a root of that issue was when she was pretty young she had pooped her pants and been severely spanked because of it. Her system always took “pooping” as bad and held it in most of her life, which led to some pretty bad outcomes.

5) Accountability – We started using a potty chart where Joshua would get a star on the chart every time he went pee pee on the potty. Then after he was pee pee trained we moved to poopy stars. It was a visual reminder of his success and progress

6) Reward – At first we did the M&M reward every time he went peepPee on the potty and I quickly had my son addicted to candy after 4 years of avoiding that. Then I moved to SunChips, a little healthier type of M&M and I ended up getting into them… (not good). Then we moved to stickers, and finally now we do a toy prize at the end of a week when we poopy on the potty everyday for a week.

7) Prayer – When my Mommy Helper came down from New York to live here in Florida and work for us, she got more than she bargained for when it came to clean up duty. At least 2 times a week she would get the brunt of poopy clean up mess. So being the prayerful woman she is she started bringing her request to God along with her prayer team. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Joshua was potty trained after that either. Prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have.

So how can you apply these principals to your own life or maybe your own behavior changes?

1) Expect MORE- Don’t use excuses about age, environment, finances, or the fact that most people do _______. Make your own destiny and throw away excuses.

2) Create Urgency – If you are comfortable in your life or situation there is no urgency to achieve a goal. Cut up the credit card, get real about your weight or health condition and do whatever you need to do to create urgency. The most successful entrepreneurs and home business owners were usually desperate to succeed.

3) Consistency is the KEY… – I have an amazing distributor on my team named Kim. She is successful at whatever she puts her mind too and Young Living has been a part of her life since 2006. Her commissions could easily be 10 times what they are now but her pattern of working in her YL business is inconsistent.

She will share it consistently for a little while and then move on to the next best thing then 6 months or a year later come back to it. She loves the product and continues to use them all these years but because she never stays focused on the business for more than a couple months, she loses opportunities and income. Consistency is the key to success.

4) PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE – It works in all areas of life. It’s like watering a new plant. You must praise your progress daily. Even little “sprouts” we call them… they need to be watered everyday.

5) Accountability – Dave Ramsey suggests having an accountability partner in his Financial Peace University and I would suggest it in any long term goal. Someone or a group of ‘someones’ who help lift you up and also tell you like it is. I would also suggest tracking your work and progress will help you stay accountable too.

6) REWARD – All the hard work won’t be worth it if we don’t get the REWARDS too. Set reward system for yourself so you have things to look forward to weekly even. Maybe if you work your home business in the evenings every night you get to watch all your favorite recorded shows on Saturday night. Or if you achieve a new rank in your home business you get to purchase your favorite essential oil with your REWARDS points.

7) PRAYER – The most powerful tool you have. Combined with the 6 positive actions above, it can change your life.

So I hope my son’s Potty Training Success can help you in achieving your hard goals too. Remember, it’s a process. It takes time and it may not turn out exactly as your thought because God’s plan might be different from your plan.

The Dangers of Obesity and Being Overweight

By | Losing Weight, Total Wellness, Weight Loss | No Comments

Dangers of Obesity

In 2008, more than 1.4 billion adults, 20 and older were overweight. Of these, over 200 million were men and 300 million were women. 35% under the age of 20 and 11% of these were obese. Fat and obesity is not just in America. It is a worldwide problem!

According to the WHO (World Health Organization) 65% of the world’s population live in countries where obesity and being overweight kills more people than being underweight. 40 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2011. (Source: WHO)

These are facts but here is a story to tell….

Heather Santo’s mom passed away at a young age of 34 from primary pulmonary hypertension. She was overweight and had to wait until she lost 80 pounds to get her double lung transplant. She may have been saved sooner if she hadn’t been so heavy and had to wait to get it off.

Her grandmother (her mother’s mom) died in her mid-50s from having a bad back and being almost 400 pounds. There was nothing physically wrong with her besides being obese. Her great grandmother was in her 80s and was over 300 pounds when she passed away. She had diabetes and was on all kinds of medication.

What does that leave Heather to face if she didn’t take action?

She probably would be in the same path as her mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Growing up Heather ate a whole lot of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). She said if they purchased KFC’s stock, they could be really rich by now. She grew up with fast food and junk food. She didn’t know how badly she was eating.

She started gaining weight and began noticing her weight problems by third grade. Her family didn’t encourage her to play and anytime she wanted to do any physical activity her family couldn’t take her because they were too obese to move.

Heather didn’t have friends in grade school because she was fat. No kid wanted to play with her. She’d just sit in the corner and pray for school to be over.

It all changed when Heather turned 30. On her 30th birthday while celebrating with her friends at the Hard Rock Café, Heather faced the truth. The tradition and joke for the celebration among her friends is to have the birthday girl/guy sit on a bar stool and receive all the ‘attention!’

Heather was nearly 300 pounds at that time. She was afraid she might crush the bar stool and be embarrassed….

She found a way to escape from that game and began to take a hard look at the state of her health. Her doctor warned her if she didn’t get her act together she would end up dying early like her mother. Her blood work was horribly off the charts.

What is obesity and overweight?

The WHO’s definition for overweight is a BMI greater than or equal to 25. A BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity. BMI or body mass index is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults or children. It is the person’s weight in pounds or kilograms divided by the square of his height in feet or meters.

For example a person who is 5 feet 9 inches tall at 169 (BMI 25) to 202 pounds (BMI 29.9) is overweight. At 203 pounds (BMI 30 and above) is obese. For your convenience here are two links to BMI calculators for adults and children/teens provided by CDC:

Adult
BMI calculation is the same for male or female.

Child or Teen
BMI calculation for a child or teen takes into consideration the sex of the child/teen. It is applicable for ages 2 to 19.

Are you overweight or obese?

Do you know what the extra weight on your body is doing to you?

Releasing 10 or 15 pounds will change your energy level, reduce aches and pain and help you to have better mood. Before Heather released the extra weight she was not feeling like herself. She was beginning to believe that she was going to fall into her family’s footsteps – die early or suffer with medical problems and take medications.

These are the things she went through while carrying the extra weight-

1. Put on a smile but deep inside she was miserable with her weight.
2. Lots of pain in her back from the excess weight.
3. Prior to gaining 300 pounds she had a car accident. The heavier she got the worse the pain became.
4. Ankles were weak because of weight.
5. Critical of herself.

It has not been easy for Heather. She was so overweight when she started the journey of eating right… feeling sick, nauseous and threw up a lot while her body was detoxing. It was like coming off of drugs – in this case fast food. She lost 5 pounds relatively quick and took baby steps to shed the weight.

Today she has lost over 80 pounds and is still on her journey of eating right and losing weight. It is not just “losing weight” or “dieting”. To Heather this journey is all about banishing that mindset of being perfect. Instead, enjoy the journey and continue working towards that goal of great health.

She noticed a dramatic change in how she looks at herself now. She feels better every day and no longer needs to lie to herself. Like any change that we embrace, there are challenges.

Heather’s challenges include-

1. Being critical on herself even after losing a large chunk of weight. She had to continually work on herself and her mindset.
2. There were many times when she felt like giving up.
3. She had to give herself grace and know that she will not eat perfectly her entire life. Perfection is overrated.
4. She has to remember to take it step by step and not cut off too much or expect miracles to happen because that will set her up for failure.
5. Keeping up has been an uphill and downhill battle. The entire process has been eight years now.
6. To remember this is not a race but a journey. Rebuilding our body takes time and effort. She has lost over 100 pounds twice fast only to gain it back very quickly.

One great piece of advice from Heather:

This time I’m going to go slow and win – it is for keeps. I’m done playing games and gaining it back. I keep the weight off by going one day at a time.

Are you on a journey to shed some pounds?

Here is Heather’s secret to losing weight, keeping it off, feeling and looking great:

1. To help with keeping her skin from getting saggy, she uses a dry brush and Cel-Lite Magic.
2. Start small. It is a journey and not a race.
3. Drink plenty of water. She uses Slique Essence and or lemon, grapefruit and peppermint every day. She drinks thirteen 8oz. glasses of water per day with these oils. She switches up the flavors of the citrus oils to keep it interesting.
4. Get moving in any capacity possible. She does different kinds of exercises so she won’t get bored- walk, yoga, Les Mills Combat, Rev Abs, dance, Zumba and more. The key is to keep it fresh.
5. Track your food and keep a journal to track your emotions and learn how you relate with food.
6. Get educated and read labels.
7. Keep the weight off by going one day at a time.

Heather is still on her journey. She wants to lose another 60 pounds. She is ready to fight every day to keep it off. She is one of TheTotalWellnessDoc’s group of ladies on a journey to feel better and healthier.

The Truth About Sugar Addiction

By | Essential Oils, Natural Remedies, Sugar Addiction, Total Wellness | No Comments

sugar addiction

“Sweet Poison: How sugar, not cocaine, is one of the most additive and dangerous substances” was the headline of a recent article written by Dr. Mark Hyman in the NY Daily News.

He said,
• Americans consume an average of 152 pounds of sugar each year
• Sugar is the new tobacco and secret destroyer
• Sugar is 8 times more additive than cocaine
• Sugar keeps you hungry
• Sugar makes you store belly fat
• Most are hidden in processed foods and sweetened drinks
Read more here.

To prove his point on hidden sugar, I gathered a few items and looked at the sugar content. Here are a few I found:

Pasta sauce 13g of sugar in 1/2cup
Nutella 21g of sugar in 2 tablespoon
Craisins (dried canberries) 29g of sugar in ¼ cup
Kefir 20g of sugar in 1 cup
20 oz. Mountain Dew 77 g of sugar
7 Eleven 64 oz. Double Gulp Coke 186g of sugar
4 Oreos 14 g of sugar
1 regular size Snickers bar 30g of sugar
1 frosted cherry pop tart 34g of sugar
1 bowl of Capn Crunch Cereal 24g of sugar
1 grande Starbucks Mocha Frappucino with whipped cream 47 g of sugar
McDonald’s medium size Chocolate Shake 111g of sugar
½ cup of Haagen-Dazs Raspberry Sorbet 27g of sugar
Raw almond butter 2g of sugar in 2 tablespoon (lowest here)

And the list continues…

Have you read your food labels lately?

Some of these labels require you to have a chemistry degree to understand. One important fact to remember is, for example Nutella is sold as “hazelnut spread with skim milk and cocoa.” When you take a closer look at the ingredients, the first two items listed were sugar and palm oil.

What can you understand by the order of ingredients?

Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, according to Penny Kris-Etherton PhD, a professor of nutrition at Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Nutritional Sciences and an American Heart Association spokeswoman. So the jar of Nutella has more sugar and palm oil and not hazelnut and cocoa.

Sugar comes under several names. Names for added sugars on labels include:
• Brown sugar
• Corn sweetener
• Corn syrup
• Fruit juice concentrates
• High-fructose corn syrup
• Honey
• Invert sugar
• Malt sugar
• Molasses
• Raw sugar
• Sugar
• Sugar molecules ending in “ose” (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose)
• Syrup

Can you track your daily sugar intake?
It requires a lot of work if we are consuming processed foods, fast foods, drinks and other store packaged foods.

How about artificial sweeteners?

Want to avoid too much sugar or calories? We are being marketed to drink diet soda/drink and eat sugar-free or products with artificial sweeteners. These zero calories and no sugar products sound like a no-brainer. But are they?

Aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, acesulfame potassium (acesulfame K) and neotame are five approved sweeteners in America. Recently I discovered a graphic posted by stepintomygreenworld.com on “The Truth About Splenda.” Splenda is a type of sucralose that will
• Increase the pH level in our body
• Slow down digestion
• Kill good bacteria in the intestines
• Lead to liver and kidney lesions
• Stimulate fat storage and may contribute to weight gain and cause the desire for more calories
• Increase carbohydrate cravings

Despite the negative effects, worldwide usage of artificial sugar is increasing every year. Food Product Design says it will increase to $3 billion by 2017 from $2 billion in 2012.

4. Insulin resistance
5. Diabetes
6. Obesity
7. Liver Failure
8. Pancreatic cancer
9. Kidney disease
10. High blood pressure (hypertension)
11. Heart disease and stroke
12. Addiction (food addiction)
13. Cognitive decline
14. Nutritional deficiencies

Are there ways to curb sugar cravings?

I’ve written an article on Six Natural Remedies to Stop Sugar Cravings.

Here are 2 testimonials from essential oil users:

Donna G from CO on Ocotea and sugar cravings:

Dark chocolate had become a regular snack for me everyday, even though it was just a bite or two. I know sugar can inhibit your immune system so I wanted to change this habit.

I was able to sample ocotea and loved its gentle cinnamon flavor. I started taking just one drop orally per day. Within 1 week, I realized that I had skipped my chocolate several afternoons and it didn’t appeal to me. Now, if I eat sugar, it is because I decide to, not that I am craving it.

I love the taste of this oil!

Fran G from PA on oils for appetite or craving suppressant:

I wanted to help my Mom out with her blood sugar levels as she felt she couldn’t afford to buy the NingXia Red each month, so I put together a recommended formula for control of blood sugar which is equal parts of:

Thieves

Fennel

Dill

Coriander

Well, I really liked the aroma so much I decided to where it like a perfume and dabbed some on my wrists. I began to notice that I wasn’t constantly running to the refrigerator anymore and once when I did get a craving I was heading out to Mr. Z’s (a supermarket) to grab some sweets and had dabbed some on just before I went out. I drove the 3 miles to the store only to get there and wander the aisles. I came back home empty handed. The cravings were gone. I had no desire to get anything unhealthy.

I only have one concern and that is I may not be eating enough altogether as I have no particular need to eat when I use this mix. I never noticed it with fennel alone. At least I can focus on eating to live rather than living to eat. Hope this helps.
