Foundations of Success

By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Foundations of Success in our health come from small steps toward a future goal.  Once we have reached that goal we must take daily actions to maintain our success.

Sounds simple enough right?!   Success in most things can be simple but not easy.  If it were easy we would have a majority population of fit, healthy and wealthy individuals.

When it comes to Health Success Foundations,  the best examples  come from the world's top Athletes.  The top three foundations of their success are Habits, Routines and Self Discipline.

Let's be real and ask ourselves the following questions:

What Habits do I have that are good for my health?

What Habits do I have or don't have that are destructive to my health?

What Routines are health promoting for me?

What Routines are healthy for my family?

What areas of my life am I disciplined in a positive way?

What areas of my life do I need self discipline?

No one is perfect, that is not what this is about. It is about looking at ourselves honestly and giving ourself praise for what we do do good and get real with what we aren't.

Some of may be feeling like you don't even know the answers to these questions. You may need another set of eyes to help you see the positive in your life and areas you need to improve.

Let me suggest a 30 minute Wellness Coaching Session to help you Begin on the Road to Health. Click here for more info:  http://www.thetotalwellnessdoc.com/wellness-coaching

Routine: Every person and family will have a different routine, but routines are a foundation of success.  What time do you wake up, go to bed, when do you study, when do you eat, how often do you eat….. and the list goes on.

When it comes to your health having a routine of food and fitness is important.  But so is having some weekly or even daily me time, fun time, family time, couple time, and God time.

I learned having a routine for my children is extremely important to their health.  Starting when they are an infant.

What routines are best for you?  What routine do you think you might want to test out for the next few weeks to see if it is a fit for you? What routines are you ready to implement?

Habits:  In Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People his 7th Habit includes Sharpening the Saw.  This means preserving and enhancing the best asset you have YOU.

There are many Health Habits we can adopt including:

Drinking 1/2 our body weight in oz of water per day
Exercising daily
Speaking Kindness and Love over our body and about ourselves

What are some Healthy habits you can adopt to Sharpen your Saw?

They say it takes 21 days to set a habit. I agree and suggest to my clients to start with a 30 day goal. This leaves room for rest days and other things that might come up in our lives.

Habits and Routines all have 1 thing in common….. they all need
Self Discipline otherwise known as Self Control

Self Control:  Self Discipline and Self Control may be hard words to hear. When we think of the word discipline some of us might cringe or want to run away because of harsh upbringing or perfection standards.

I see clients who lack these foundations most of the time and then I also see clients who take this concept to the extreme thinking that perfection will come from strick standards on self.  Both of these concepts can cause Physical and Emotional issues.

I want to leave you with a different picture of Self Control. This belief is my belief and although you don't have to agree I hope you will be open enough to just think about it.

In the Bible it clearly states that Self Control is a gift of the Holy Spirit to us.   A gift to overcome our fleshy unmotivated and sometimes gluttonous bodies. Did you ever think about praying to God to help you overcome Food Addictions, the lack of motivation to exercise, even to help you to wake up at 5am and feel rested.

Really Dr. Mary?  Yes I have seen it in my own life and many others. Simple things like feeling fully rested on a few hours sleep to miraculous things where clients have radically been delivered  from addiction of alcohol, drugs or even sugar.  It is real. God can do all things we just have to ASK and BELIEVE!

How to Avoid Getting Run Down

By | Mind and Soul, Nutritional Supplements, Total Health Support Systems, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | 2 Comments

How to Avoid Getting Run Down?
By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

1) Sleep:  We all know it is important to get a good night's sleep.  6-8 hrs ideally with at least 4 hours uninterrupted. This means no bathroom tips, rollovers, sips of water, no nothing but REM sleep.

It's easy to get run down when you are sleeping regularly. If you are not getting good quality sleep or you know you won't be getting much sleep then plan a cat nap.  Take your lunch break outdoors in the sun with a blanket and a 20 minute snooze, or in your car with the seat back and your eyes closed. Don't worry what people think your body needs just a little bit of rest to help get you through the day.

2) Plan Ahead:  Ever feel like chicken with their head cut off?  Running everywhere but getting no where.  If that's you it's important to carve out 10 minutes in your day to plan. Planning can help keep your cortisol "stress hormone" down and your energy up. Don't give me an excuse that you don't have time. Get yourself up 30 minutes earlier in the morning and get it done.  You will thank me later when your stress is less.

3) Delegate: Stop thinking you can do it all, because you were not made to do all things.  In Proverbs 31 it talks of this amazing woman who is a mother, business owner, home maker, land owner, wife and more. But guess what she doesn't do it by herself it clearly states she actually had servants.  Now you may not be able to afford servants but you can delegate.  Can your friend grab some groceries for you?  Can you ask a High School student to come in and help you with laundry once a week?  I wrote about Support Systems before in

Start implementing them today so you can avoid getting run down.

4) Drink Water Your fountain of energy and youth come from WATER.  That's right. Make sure you are drinking plenty of it, especially is stressful times.  Half your body weight in ounces.

5) Say No: Take responsibility for getting run down because you allowed yourself to get there.  Start saying no to obligations or jobs.  Make sure you know your #1 priority and goals so that when something comes up you can say Yes to those things that help you get to your goals and no to those that don't.

6) Supplement Nutrition:  A key factor in those who are sick and those who aren't.  My favorite #1 Keep me Healthy drink is called NingXia Red  Every single client who takes 2-4 oz a day always says how much more energy they have and how less often they get sick.  Try it for a month and see if you feel the difference.  If you don't we will give you your money back.

7) Germ Fighters:  I use several different methods for germ fighting.1. Thieves Essential oil which when applied to the bottom of my feet everyday helps keeps my body strong.  2. Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier.  An absolute must when you travel and for the purse, especially if you have children.  3. thieves lozenges. My quote is "One Thieves lozenge a day keeps the doctor away".  4. Inner Defense an internal supplement which can be taken when you get sick 4 or more capsules a day and to prevent colds and flu by taking one a day.

I am sharing all of this with you because I am lying in bed right now with a runny nose and slightly sore throat because I didn't listen to my own advice.  But after 5 Thieves Lozenges and 5 Inner Defense capsules today I am doing much better. I will put Thieves oil on my feet, back and neck along and should be better tomorrow.  I will let you know.

We like to hear from you. Please leave your comment below.

Life is hard but hold on

Don't Give Up Hope

A short message by Dr. Mary Starr

Life is hard but Hold On!

My friend Sarah opened the door to her home that had days before been burned almost completely. I will never forget that smell. They lost everything material they owned including their family dog. But they survived along with their children, and although she was in shock she was holding on to something greater than her.

Johnna had bottomed out. All her retirement she had been living on was gone, she was forced to move back in with her ex-husband, she had nothing but a part time job that paid her sporadically. Yet she was not defeated, she held on. She knew deep down she would not only survive she would thrive.

Sean had everything, an amazing job, a new baby, a wonderful wife, a huge quarter of million dollar home, a new truck. Everything until one day it happened. He lost his job, benefits, and retirement. But unlike many others who would let this devastate them he didn't. He stayed positive and held on to Faith.

I remember that day in my own life when my family was ripped apart by lies and deceit. The hardest day of my life but something inside of me gave me the strength to push forward and go on.

Today I understand that that strength to move forward, go on, keep living even when everything around falls is really a strength greater than all things. It is FAITH.

I pray that you will find that FAITH not just when you need it but everyday. It makes life not just bearable but marvelous.

Our team is here for you. Let us know if you have specific needs that we can pray for you. And remember Life is Hard but Hold on.

I appreciate you,

The Health Care Package

The Health Care Package
By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Care and Feeding of your College Students

Here are some of the challenges of living in College Dorms or College Apartment living. I can tell you from experience because of my degree I spent 9 years in college. Avoiding the Freshmen 15lbs, dealing with new stressors and lack of sleep can be hard. College students are prone to higher incidence of colds and flu, fungal infections, and bacteria infections.

Many parents pay for or help support their child's education, but rarely do we think of supporting their health. Why not start sending them a Health Care Package. Here is what you would put in it and why.

Ear Plugs: there are so many distractions at college that your child may have a hard time focusing or even sleeping at night because of all the noise. When I was in school ear plugs were my best friend. They help you tune out and are able to concentrate or sleep when you need to.

Most freshmen going off to college will be sharing a small room with one or two other individuals as well as living quarters with dozens more. Dorm life can be quite loud and different from the comfort of home. With many students studying late and getting up early Quality Sleep can be an important factor to your child's success.

Sleep Eye Mask: Sounds kind of weird but both men and women have found an eye mask to be very beneficial. Some roommates set up their dorm room so their bed is shielded from light.

As I have stated in previous blogs the body will deteriorate with sleep cycles less than 4 hours. We must get a full 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Now most of us need much more than this but if a room mate or something is causing them to wake up several times in the middle of the night their health will suffer. Make sure you children know this too.

Essential oils

Tranquil Roll on : Young Living's Lavender oil has been researched to be more effective than the leading OTC sleep medicine. Tranquil Roll on has Lavender, Chamomile and Cedarwood which not only helps you get a restful night sleep but is great for calming the brain. Just roll on the feet, ears and neck before bed or just put on a pillow and sleep is yours.

Deep Relief Roll on: Studying long hours can not only make you tired but lead to neck pain and headaches. Just apply deep relief to the temples and back of the neck and the pain is gone in minutes but a wonderful cooling sensation is left. This blend of Young Living Essential oils contains Peppermint which has scientifically been found to improve concentration too. So while studying just add a smudge to a tissue and inhale.

Stress Away: College is very stressful. 18-30 hrs of classroom & lab time along with as much or even 2 times that in studying. Many college students also have to work part time to earn money for their school. Stress Stress Stress. But did you know the body has a simple system to relieve stress. It is called your Olfactory System or your sense of smell. Certain smells calm the body so it can better deal with stress. Young Living put together many of these oils into one blend called Stress Away. An easy to use roll on you can keep in your pocket for those stressful times. I actually advise inhaling it 7 different times throughout the day. Some wear it as cologne or perfume.

Not only can all these tools help with dealing with stress and getting better sleep but your nutrition also plays a big role in the health of the body.

Nutrition:

Carbozyme: College can be one of the poorest eating periods of our life. With access to pizza, cookies, cakes, soda, and ice cream 24/7 Carbohydrate binging is common. This can cause swings in blood sugar along with moodiness, depression and fatigue. I highly encourage most everyone take enzymes most of their life but this enzyme Carbozyme really helps digest those foods that are bad for us. Not only do our clients notice their blood sugar balance improved but many notice weight loss too. Carbozyme is a good choice for keeping off the Freshmen 15lbs.

NingXia Red: is another great choice for keeping college students healthy. Just one ounce has more Vitamin C then Oranges, more Beta Carotene than carrots, 12 minerals, 18 amino acids and lots of other good stuff all natural. This is a great alternative to those energy drinks like Monster, Red Bull, and 6 hr Energy drinks. NingXia Red not only tastes great but it comes in simple 1 oz packets that you can easily take daily in water or straight. For athletes and poor eaters 2-3 oz of day will not only improve athletic performance but also energy levels, and strengthen the immune systems. Athletic teams who all drank NingXia Red had a much less rate in colds and flu and noticeable improvement in performance.

So Here is Everything in your
Health Care Package

Ear Plugs,
Eye Masks,
Young Living's Tranquil Roll on  ,
Young Living's Deep Relief Roll on
Young Living's Stress Away Roll on,

and a Month's supply of Young Living's Carbozyme
and Young Living's NingXia Red

The Health Care Package will cost about $150.
A Monthly Maintenance Care Package cost about $100 dollars.
This extra $1200 dollars a year investment in your child's health may have a great impact on their future.

Tips for Staying Sane When Kids Leave For College

By | Depression, Mind and Soul, Nutritional Supplements, Wellness Coaching | 4 Comments

Editor's note:
Today my heart is hurting for several of my clients. This weekend they will become empty nesters saying goodbye to all their children as they go off to college. One amazing single mom has raised her three girls for the past 25 years. She, like many others is struggling through terrible grief. Today's article shares some strategies that will help many parents deal with that sadness. Written by my friend and colleague Jeannette Webb of Aiming Higher Consultants she knows your pain personally and has helped hundreds of parents and college bound children navigate the college admissions process.

Tips for Staying Sane When Kids Leave For College

By Jeannette Webb

While much of the world seems eager for their kids to grow up and get out of the house, I haven't found that to be the case for the families I know and work with.  In fact, many parents fight valiantly to ignore the ache in their heart that reaches a crescendo when their child leaves home for college.  It's not something many people talk about and even though we know it's going to be difficult, the utter desolation can threaten to overwhelm a parent when the day finally comes.

I was totally unprepared for the depth of my grief when my oldest left home.

Fortunately, I had a dear friend ahead of me on the journey and she shared some strategies that made things bearable.

1. Make some physical changes

There are many ways to implement this, but let me give you an example.  Families who are close usually place a high priority on sharing meals together.  That is a wonderful habit that can cause great pain when there is an empty place at the table.  My friend told me firmly to get rid of that empty space.

Since, we are a family of four and dine at a round table that just fits us, I moved from my usual seat and sat in my son's seat and placed a centerpiece in my old spot.  I removed his chair to storage.  It totally changed my vantage point and I wasn't seeing his empty place or his unoccupied chair.

When my daughter left home, I shoved the table up against the wall, moved her chair to storage and set out two placemats at the two remaining chairs with a centerpiece in the center.

2. Remove reminders

Sometimes it's the little things that can bring tears.  I realized, after crying a few times in the shower, that my daughter's shampoo and other "shower stuff" was still in place even though she wasn't.  I took it all out and stored it out of sight in a cabinet where it would be waiting for her return.

I kept catching sight of my gloomy self in the large mirror she uses for violin practice in the living room.  It got moved to her bedroom and no longer serves as a reminder that she isn't there practicing.

3. Stay interruptible

Life stays busy even after kids leave home, but it is imperative that you stay available for them.  Our kids are going through an even greater adjustment than we are and if we are too busy to talk when they call, they will eventually quit calling at all.  My kids and I have grown even closer through their college years because I made it my priority to be there for them as they were navigating new things.  We've laughed and cried, shared successes and failure, and tightened the family bond while the cell phone minutes ticked away.  Trust me, it's worth the expense to avoid the consequences.   I've talked with moms who didn't make the time to be present for their young adults and then they couldn't figure out why the kid got into trouble at college.

4. Talk to people

Most parents going through the pain of kids leaving home assume they are the only ones suffering and so stay silent.  I recently had a conversation with an old friend and we discovered that we'd both battled tremendous grief over our children leaving home and had gone through it alone.  If we'd opened up, we could have planned special get-togethers to laugh over our high school pranks, go shopping, or anything to make it through.  But we wouldn't have had to face things alone.

If you are facing the empty nest this year, take steps to make life more bearable.  If you have friends who are facing it (even though you are not), invite them to lunch, give them reasons to laugh, and be there for them.  There is a reason Christians are instructed to do life together with other believers.

Editor's recommendation to reduce stress:

In addition I have to add that inhaling Young Living Essential oils like Citrus Fresh, Stress Away, Sacred Frankincense, Joy and Valor 10 or more times a day can give you a great sense of peace.

What is your Biggest Setback to Losing Weight?

By | Losing Weight, Sugar Addiction, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | 5 Comments

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST
SETBACK TO LOSING WEIGHT?

By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Recently we surveyed over 50 women who struggle or have struggled with weight loss. All types of women responded to our Question including young women in their 20's to women in their 70's. Moms of eight children, woman Business owners and even some actresses and singers. Their responses were genuine and awakening. Read on and see if you agree. I think some of the answers will shock you.

Food: Over 25% of the women surveyed named food as a specific reason why they couldn't release the weight.

I love food          Sugar          chips   chocolate

I enjoy food alcohol portion control

Milk Chocolate and Southern Cooking

Environment. It is more difficult to stay on track when surrounded by those who are not on the same eating plan. Family meal times- cooking 2 different meals all the time. when society all around you- bombarded by messages that do not coincide with your own decision to eat healthy. Not just eating at a restaurant, but ANY social event often involves food. To stay on track- I must plan, plan, plan ahead and bring something of your own to share, or eat well before I go out!

My response : Yes food is a culprit in the majority of weight release and maintenance. Many individuals can go on diets like South Beach, the HcG diet, Medi-Fast and lose the weight. But unless followed by a maintenance plan or an actual change in their lifestyle when it comes to food, including portions, they will gain the weight back slowly or rapidly.

Also many woman with thyroid insufficiency or digestive issues will need specific nutritional supplementation to even take off 5lbs. We discuss more details at http://www.thetotalwellnessdoc.com/thyroid-dysfunction

Exercise: 25% of those surveyed said lack of exercise was contributing to their weight problem.

I'm in too much pain to exercise I sit all day on my job.

Not enough exercise

I do go to the gym but not as often as I should.

My response: Yes for Total Wellness we must exercise. Most programs that only address food will work better and help create lasting results with exercise. But there is a catch. The type of exercise you do is very important.

For pain clients must start with something that they can do. Swimming is ideal even though chlorinated pools are not so good for the thyroid gland and can hinder weight release. (We give specifics of how to fight chlorine in our 5-20lbs Weight loss Webinar http://www.thetotalwellnessdoc.com/thyroid-dysfunction)

But let me share something specific for those of you exercising and can't seem to lose weight. #1 Make sure you are not going over your calorie ceiling. A great resource for this is Spark People . On that website you can create a weight release goal and it can calculate your calorie limits for the day. Then you just enter them in. Most smart phones will allow you to download this app for free and it makes it much easier to keep track.

#2 For optimal weight release and TOTAL WELLNESS you must exercise Aerobically 30 minutes or more 3 times a week. The best weight loss aerobic exercises uses interval training to your max if you have been okayed by your doc to do so. In addition you also must strength train 30 minutes or more 3 times a week as well. As I have stated before Chalene Extreme is my favorite program for incorporating both the Aerobic and Strength Training necessary to release the weight. ( I have to brag I already released 13% body fat.)

Will Power, Energy and I'm to busy : About another 15% named Will Power, lack of energy or I'm too busy as why they were struggling.

I also have a problem with finding that "will power".

Staying in "the zone" for a length of time. A big trigger with this is getting too busy to prepare healthy meals consistently and then making excuses why no time exercise
Willpower (sugar) Energy and great attitude!

I can eat well in relatively good portions – but can't seem to get the energy up to exercise.

My response: Lack of energy could be the result of something else going on in the body like lack of a specific nutrition need, a thyroid issue, or toxic liver.

Great mentors taught me the following quotes :

There are reasons and results and the reasons don't matter.

    Excuses are well planned lies.

We all have excuses of why we can't. But for every excuse you give me I can show you someone in your same exact situation or worse who can. What is the difference? One makes the choice, action and commitment to change the other stays stuck. Sorry, but let's get real. You don't because you don't, not because the kids take up all your time, you don't have the money, you don't have the time. There are solutions to everything including low energy, no time, and no desire. I wrote an article called Support Systems that can help you see some situations that might help you find solutions thought support and delegation. Make the choice. I know you can do it. Remember we will all fall off the wagon, have good weeks and bad, but if you keep with it you raise yourself to an amazing level of Total Wellness.

Emotions, Self Image, Self Esteem, Body Image

this category was mentioned by more than 60% of the women polled.

my emotions, I eat for every one of them and I am emotional!

I am constantly calling myself fat. I know my self esteem is my biggest block.

holding onto past thoughts, ideas, beliefs. Also weight is a safety net.

changing my body image, the way I think about myself.

My Biggest challenge: Is always the fluctuation in self esteem that effects the drive to loose weight and therefore setting back progress or accelerating it… When the weight is gone: I'm happy and happy with myself … (sad but true) I have recently come to this conclusion and started focusing on my self esteem instead 🙂 which effects my weight naturally

My response: WOW!!! I can't add more to this than those responses. Working with hundreds of clients I see this all to often where we will make progress with a client and then they plateau or fall back. Until they are willing to break through past hurts, junk in the trunk, release anger or pain, and embrace forgiveness healing and weight release stop happening.

Lastly I would like to share this comment from a woman who has recently addressed the emotional and spiritual blocks in her life and released 20lbs.

"When a person is ready to let go of the emotional and spiritual blocks in their lives, the weight will go away, they will want to get up and move and the will have energy and health and well being. After much time and effort and willingness of spirit I can say now I am ready to achieve and live my most healthy life."

Interesting how she and many others will have the weight just FALL OFF when they address Emotional and Spiritual roots. Emotional pain can be obvious or not, but many times Spiritual Injury is overlooked. We are Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual beings. My opinion is God made us that way and it is foolish to think that we can have lasting weight release, Total Wellness, and healing without addressing all three.

This my friend Rachel Jones before and after addressing all three components is finding weight release, Total Wellness and happiness.

I pray that you will make the choice to look your biggest challenge in the face and ATTACK.

To know more about Rachel's story and many more go to  www.http://www.thetotalwellnessdoc.com/thyroid-dysfunction

The Care and Feeding of Your Children: Hydration

By | Body, Nutritional Supplements, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | 3 Comments

The Care and Feeding of Your Children: HYDRATION

     By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Acne, Headaches, Bad Breath, Constipation, Cramping, Poor Concentration, Depression, Anxiety, Moodiness, Mental Fogginess

These symptoms might be what your teenager struggles with or even yourself. What you drink could contribute to all these things. Here are some simple suggestions that can help reduce some of these symptoms.

Make sure your children have proper hydration. WATER

    FLAVORED WATERS

Flavored waters are expensive and not as healthy as you may think. Did you know that one bottle of Vitamin Water packs in 125 calories and 32.5g of sugar?

Ideally the best drink for your family is pure water. No chlorine, no fluoride just plain good most likely filtered water. (There are a variety of different water filtration and alkalizing machines and I will discuss that in another blog in the coming months.)

A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO FLAVORED WATERS

Start your kids young liking pure water. If someone in your family doesn't like the taste of water try some of Young Living Essential oils in your water. I get a big glass (must be glass) bottle and put my pure water and choose from Orange, Tangerine, Citrus Fresh, Grapefruit, Peppermint, Spearmint and even Cinnamon oil. Pick an oil put 1 drop in the water and it is like a whole new drink plus you are getting all the added benefits of the Young Living Essential oils. Pick something and try it yourself first before giving it to the family.

    HOW MUCH WATER?

The amount of fluids we need everyday from our drink and food should equal half our body weight in oz per day. If your an athlete be sure to stay hydrated before, during and after your events. If you are going to still drink Soda, Coffee or Caffeinated drinks then you must drink double that amount in water to make up for it.

    HOW HYDRATED ARE YOU?

If you want to see how hydrated you or your children are you can purchase a scale that measures weight and water hydration. This can give you an estimate of if you or

    SODA POP

Hopefully I don't have to tell you how bad sodas are for the body especially growing bodies. They are particularly harmful because Soda leaches calcium from our bones, wears the enamel off of our teeth, increases our chance of obesity, spikes blood sugar levels, and children who drink soda are 4 times as likely to have a broken bone.

A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO SODA POP

Adults use soda to help pep them up or because they just like it. Children can easily get addicted to the sugar in soda. NingXia Red is a juice with 50% wolfberry which has essential amino-acids, vitamins and minerals the body needs. 1 ounce of NingXia Red has more antioxidants than eating 8 oranges, 4 lbs of carrots, 2 cups of blueberries, 2 cups of raspberry and you get the picture. ITS GOOD STUFF. And taste good.

So make your own soda with NingXia Red. Not everyday but occasionally treat your kids to a healthy soda with seltzer water an ounce of NingXia Red juice. This is our family's favorite because it tastes like a fruit soda but we are getting all the benefits of NingXia Red. NingXia Red is far superior to many Energy Drinks like Red Bull and Monster because they give sustainable energy to the body. If your child struggles with fatigue increase their Ningxia Red consumption to 2 oz twice a day and see how they do.

"Even though my 23 year old son doesn't eat the best but I know he is getting good nutrition because he has his NingXia Red everyday. I know I can trust NingXia Red." Kathryn Faso

“My daughter is a High School athlete who used to be sick all the time. Now I give her NingXia Red everyday 1 oz and 2 oz if she has practice or a big game. Her coaches notice a difference and she has rarely been sick this year." Hannibal NY

"My child was 2 years old and non-verbal and still not walking. We were very concerned. After just 6 weeks of giving her 2 ounces a day she started saying words and walking. I know it the nutrition in NingXia Red changed her." Mesa Arizona

You can also do seltzer water with Lemon, Citrus Fresh or Grapefruit essential oil and a little Stevia to sweeten it. Some grocery stores carry Zevia a delicious healthy soda. Again though make these a treat and not an everyday occurrence. Your wallet will thank you.

    Stop Buying Juices

I know this may come as a shock to you but Juices can be harmful to your children's health. One glass of Orange Juice has 18 grams of sugar. Even if your sugar is natural from a fruit 18 grams of sugar will spike your teenager’s blood sugar and could result in low energy and moodiness. If you have to have juices dilute them with water 50/50.

"I was pregnant and developed Gestational Diabetes. My doctor said it was because of all the Orange Juice and juices I was drinking."

    A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE

We have already discussed NingXia Red which 1 oz can be diluted in 8-12 oz of water. But if you like juices think about squeezing or juicing your own. You will get 50% more nutrition and enzymes because FRESH IS BEST. The Champion Juicer is my favorite but the Jack Lalane Juicer is a close second. It can be fun as you can have your kids choose the fruit and veggies they want in their drink. There are lots more nutrients and enzymes you don't get with other store bought juices. My favorite Lemonade is 4 organic apples with 1 lemon after it's juiced I add water and ice and it is fabulous! The whole family will love it!

The Care and Feeding of your Family: Teenagers

By | Dr Mary Starr, Nutritional Supplements, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | 2 Comments

The Care and Feeding of your Family:  Teenagers

    By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Soccer, Football, Dance, Cheer leading, Marching Band, Tennis, Cross Country are just some of the Fall Sports starting up again. Children ages 12-18 play the majority of these sports in Middle School to High School. These teenage years are full of change and development. A very important time that may determine a person's future. Grades, athletic performance, learning a trade, attitude, behavior, social development all can be affected by WHAT YOUR CHILDREN EAT.

Parents of kids in sports spend a lot of their time, money and energy making sure their children have the right sneakers, best gear, and that they can make it to all the practices and games. Why?   One parent told me "I want my kids to have the opportunities I didn't have as a kid". Yet she just dropped off a large pizza and soda to her two obese children.

She was doing all she could do to keep up with all the practices and games. She made sure she was at every event, but neglected proper feeding of her teenage athletes. The result was two obese children.  What will their life be like 10 years from now or 20 years from now? Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Rapid Aging, Infertility and the list goes on.

This is a serious problem and although you may not have obese children you still could have nutritionally deficient kids.  And although this is just my personal opinion you may be unknowingly or knowingly setting your children up for a very difficult life.

We must learn to feed our children properly especially our teenagers and teenage athletes. Why?

Adolescents include growth spurts, body changes and hormone changes.  So many parents complain of their teenage daughters or sons becoming "monsters" or other words we won't use here when they went through puberty. Why are American children having significantly more physical and psychological issues compared to other countries, even some third world countries?

My opinion is NUTRITION or lack of it is killing our children.  It may not happen today or tomorrow but within just a few years you can begin to see the effects of poor nutrition.

Did you know that nutritional deficiencies and sugar imbalances can cause fits of rage?  Did you know that the teenage body requires certain amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fats that you simply cannot get from typical processed, fast foods, packaged foods?

Now add athleticism and you have even more requirements. My personal opinion is that schools are not just feeding our children poor nutrition and offering foods and soda that harm our kids but are we also starving our kids.  That's right STARVING…  Because, see, when a child goes to school they may have lunch at 10 am but not be allowed to eat again until 3pm or later if they are an athlete.  Added to that, the lack of nutrition in our school lunches and what do we have?

Several studies have confirmed that children eating whole foods, vegetables, and healthy options during their school lunches and snacks scored higher in various tests, had fewer missed days of school and less behavioral problems.

Many parents think their children's behavior problem is a psychological condition and put them on medications like Ritalin or an Anti-depressant.  YIKES, WAKE UP! It's what you are feeding your children or not feeding your children.  Even conditions like allergies and asthma can be improved by feeding your children correctly.

So what can you do?   Well you will have to wait until Thursday to get part II of this newsletter….  don't miss Thursdays Blog. Parents pay me over $300 to give them the information you will be getting in Thursday's blog.  The results they get from those who apply it is amazing.

"My child is getting A's and B's in school for the first time, since we changed to the Wellness program. "

"My son scored 4 goals for the first time this week, and his coach says his performance has improved 100% this season."

"Sarah's singing has dramatically improved since following your suggestions. Her voice is stronger and she rarely gets sick now."

    Here is a sneak Peak.

#1) Make sure your children have proper hydration.

Get rid of the soda in the house. Make it for special occasions once a week at the most.

Get rid of the juices in the house including Orange Juice.  If you want to drink juice squeeze or juice your own.  You will get 50% more nutrition because FRESH IS BEST.  There are lots more nutrients and enzymes you don't get with other.

You are weaker than you think you are and stronger than you think you are

By | Benefits of Exercise, Body, Chronic Illness, Dr Mary Starr, Fibromyalgia | 2 Comments

You are weaker than you think you are and stronger than you think you are?

    By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia sufferers can spend a lot of time in bed resting. Some may even spend 16-20 hrs a day resting.  The pain and fatigue can be unbearable to even get out of bed.  After just 4 hours of bed rest the body begins to decrease its muscle mass and fibers.  Bed Rest can contribute to the pain because lymph and toxins become stuck in the body and inflammation can increase. Bed rest for weeks at a time can contribute to muscle atrophy and weakness of the stabilizing core muscles which could lead to neck and back problems.

Obese individuals can have a condition of muscle build up, tightness and weakness where certain muscles grow strong and big from the extra weight they carry and other muscles become weak.  They can end up with the same inflammatory pain conditions as a Fibromyalgia client.

What about those who sit all day long?  They also can end up with a tight muscle weak muscle condition which can cause pain and problems.

First why Exercise?   Well we addressed that in our Benefits of Exercise article. Here are a few more reasons from Dr. Murphree's Health Matters Newsletter

Exercise is a wonderful stress reducer and mood elevator. It helps relieve mild depression by generating endorphins, the body's natural pain killers that are associated with the "runner's high." Some researchers have said that exercise can raise levels of norepinephrine — a neurotransmitter associated with drive, ambition, energy, and happiness — by 200 percent.

Exercise also stimulates important neurotransmitters that help us combat insomnia, irritability, and fatigue, as well as food, alcohol, and tobacco cravings. Blood glucose and insulin levels are decreased, which is extremely beneficial for carbohydrate-intolerant individuals and type-2 diabetics. (Type-1 diabetics will need to adjust their insulin regimen to account for increased exercise.)

Exercise also decreases triglycerides (fats) in your blood and LDL – the bad form of cholesterol, while increasing HDL – the good form. High blood pressure is lowered, and the heart becomes stronger and more efficient, pumping more blood per beat. Exercise increases the diameter of coronary arteries, greatly reducing the risk of heart attack. Exercise can even reduce the risk of a second heart attack. Among heart attack survivors, those who choose not to exercise are over 20 times more likely to have another heart attack than those who exercise.

BUT EXERCISE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH
YOU MUST STRENGTHEN ALL YOUR MUSCLES

Myself and many of my clients walk daily, ride a bike, even have strenuous jobs with physical labor, but to properly strengthen the body we must include Strength Training into our Recovery and Fitness Plan.

The number #1 reason for Strength Training Exercise is to protect your bones and muscles.  But there are plenty more reasons like increasing your immune system, decreasing your risk of injury, eliminating Type II diabetes, burning more calories, and Strength Training is even found more effective than drugs in fighting arthritis pain.

     Where to Begin?

If you have any illness be sure to consult with your health care practitioner. But if you have Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia you may also need to work in stages.

    Recovery Stage

If you have a debilitating disabling condition I recommend the Chi Machine or a Vibrating machine for beginners.  These machines help do the work for you as you lay, sit or stand on them. They burn calories, and increase the lymphatic motion which can decrease pain.

    Beginner and Beyond Stage

The next level would include an exercise program developed for Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Obese, Arthritis and Pain clients called T-TAP exercise. This is an excellent short (some are 15 minutes)  simple exercise program that you can do in the comfort of your home.

T-TAP exercise helped me to regain my health and strength.  It got me strong enough to start to lift weights. Many individuals have regained their health with this system alone. Charlotte Siems released over 100 lbs and has kept it off for years.

You may only be able to do part or some of the exercises at first but stick with it you will get stronger.  You can use a variety of T-TAP trainings for a Total Body strength and toning workout for your entire life.  But some of you will need more so when you are ready move on to the next stage.

     Strength Training Stage

Strength Training can be accomplished in the gym or at home.

Many gyms are equipped with good Nautilus, Cybex and Free weight type of equipment that helps you develop your strength and muscle.  My personal opinion after working out at dozens of gyms is that one size fits all machines are not as effective as a program specifically tailored for you.  I recommend investing in a Personal Trainer for several sessions until you understand and can do a specific routine.  You may want to work with a Personal Trainer periodically throughout the year to help challenge you and get the quickest results.

    MY FAVORITE

    Chalene Extreme by Beach Body

Wow am I impressed with this Program.  She is an excellent trainer who has very carefully paid attention to all the little details a personal trainer would.  But the best part is that the cost is less than 2 sessions with a personal trainer and you can do it in the convenience of your home. You will feel the results in a week, and see the results in less than 3 weeks.

    DON'T FORGET THE NUTRITION

To get strong again your body is going to need some specific carbohydrates and proteins.  NingXia Red is an excellent way to fuel your body during a strength training workout followed by Powermeal a meal replacement shake.   I recommend getting a liter of water with 2 oz of NingXia Red in it and drink this during your work out and finish it within 3 hours of your work out.  Also make sure you have had your Protein Shake within 20-30 minutes of finishing your workout.  Some people even enjoy a shake 30 minutes before and then again afterwards.  Listen to your body and give it what it needs.

After a decade of  only doing aerobic exercises and then living 2 months in bed and on the couch I became extremely weak, fatigued, and hurting.  I did not have a foundation of strong muscle that would sustain me through that period of little movement.  But THANK YOU GOD…. for that awful experience because had I not gone through that I would have never known how WEAK I REALLY WAS.   Now just 3 weeks into it. I feel Stronger than EVER !

Remember if you sit most of your day you are probably weaker than you think you are.  But give yourself just a few weeks of beginning Strength training and you will soon realize you are stronger than you thought you were too!

How to Live Healthy and Happy at 100 Years Old?

By | Benefits of Exercise, Chiropractor, Dr Mary Starr, Nutritional Supplements, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | 2 Comments

How to live healthy and happy at 100 years old?

    By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

When you have a debilitating disease like Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue syndrome you can only think about how you are going to make it through the day let alone another 10, 20, or 30 years. It can become very overwhelming but whether you are in okay health or have a serious illness there are some simple things we can do everyday.

Every morning at 5:30am you can find Gordon out walking. He walks 3-4 miles at an 18 min mile pace. He lives in and maintains his own home. Gordon eats small meals, lots of fruit, not a lot of red meat, and he takes nutritional supplements like NingXia Red. He enjoys his afternoon nap, reads about the latest in health and nutrition, still drives and enjoys traveling all over the country to see his family. Gordon says he plans on living healthy and happy another 10 years.

When you drive by Shirley's home you will know what her passion is gardening. She has some of the most beautiful small gardens in town. You can find outside caring for her garden most days. Her other passion is dancing and she can dance most 40 year olds pants off. She prepares her meals, eats small portions and lots of veggies. She is an excellent cook, drives her own car, crochets, reads lot of cookbooks and experiments in the kitchen every week.

Vita "Vitamin" as she is known to her family and friends is like a little energizer bunny even at 87 years old. She doesn't drink any coffee or tea, takes no medications but does take her nutrition juice NingXia Red every day. She walks so fast that her 30 year old grandchildren have a hard time keeping up. She reads 1-2 books a week. She is an excellent cook preparing food 5-6 days of the week and going out with friends 1-2 times a week.

So what can we learn about living to 100 years old from these 3 very healthy 90 year olds?

    1. Daily Exercise and Movement: the longest living cultures all over the world have this same factor in common Daily Physical Activity. Even if you have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue you can find ways to move your body even if it is just for circulation purposes. Machines like the Chi machine shake your body while you are lying down. You can burn calories, move lymph and toxins and help maintain your health all while taking a nap.
    1. Eat regularly and small portions.  Did you know that over eating not only makes you gain weight but it also congests the liver? A congested liver can lead to high cholesterol, blood pressure and host of other ailments.
    1. Read: Keep the mind active. Scientifically proven that the more you read, do thinking games like Sudoku and even math problems help maintain cognitive function longer.

    * less TV. Watching TV for hours a day takes less mental energy than sleeping. In my opinion clients who watch a lot of TV have worse health than those that don't.

    1. Supplement your diet: After the age of 30 our digestive enzymes begin to reduce. By the time we are 80 digestions can be slow and hindered. I have worked with many geriatric clients that were malnourished even though they ate a "healthy diet". Nutrition like NingXia Red which is a liquid juice can make a significant improvement on a geriatric client's health. I have seen it even do remarkable things for young children including autistic and ADD children.
    1. Relax and Have fun: Having something to look forward to is important at any age but especially when you single, widowed, or have lost many of your friends as these three have. Planning a trip, a garden, having a job or person you help is very very important to your mental happiness. Your mental happiness is very important to your longevity.

So this is what I have learned from these three amazing individuals…… How to stay YOUNG and HAVE FUN!

The Middle Miles of your Health Recovery of Health Program

The Middle Miles of your Health Recovery of Health Program

    By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Remember when you start a new exercise program or a diet plan how you are so excited in the beginning.  You are motivated, committed and you feel like nothing is going to stop you. The same thing happens for many of our clients when they start a Wellness Coaching. Once we find some answers and make some changes most everyone will FEEL BETTER.  And then time goes by and they are still feeling 30-60% better than before but then they hit what I like to call the MIDDLE MILES.

The Middle Miles can be found in Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Recovery, any type of Rehab, Exercise Programs, and Diet Plans.  They are this period of time when the newness and excitement goes away, boredom and weariness might set in, and we can easily lose our focus and fall off track.  It is a time for Fibromyalgia Recovery where you can have forgotten how you could barely walk up the stairs without having to take a nap afterwards and now that you have some energy you are frustrated you don't have more.    You may even feel like you are going backwards because you are not getting well fast enough.   In the Middle Miles of a Diet or Exercise Plan you may get bored or something happens that throws you off track.   Things like you sprain an ankle, or your mother in law comes to visit for a month and these are your excuses to not exercise or not eat according to your plan.  But I am here to tell you …. the MIDDLE MILES can be the FUN and FABULOUS.  Here are 5 tips to stay on Track with your health.

    1)   Give Yourself Grace.    I understand that you may need to see the Chiropractor every week or eat certain foods at specific times of day, or exercise a certain routine every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, but life will happen expect it too. And when you can't do those things Give yourself some Grace. Be lenient with yourself and don't beat yourself up.   Just shake the dust from your shoes and move on.  No one is perfect and you won't be either.

    2)   Make it FUN.  Although things like Colon Cleansing, Yeast Free Diets, or P90X programs may not sound fun your attitude and some simple planning could make them fun.  If you like to cook pick up some new cookbooks for Yeast Free eating or your eating plan and go to town. Invite friends to join you or be your team mate on your health program.  If you are cleansing and in the bathroom alot set up your favorite show reruns on your smart phone, or book on tape.

    3)   The Middle Miles need  REWARDS.  Some of us are motivated by the Challenge and Prize, others by the Fun and Friends, others by the Good they feel.  Whatever your motivation decide what REWARDS you will get in the Middle miles and stick too it.  For example, some clients who are on restrictive eating programs will make sure they have a massage of Raindrop Technique planned for their Middle miles every week or every couple of weeks.  Some clients allow themselves 1 FREE meal a week or 1 FREE day a month.  A FREE day is a day where they can eat whatever they want with NO GUILT.   It could be a pedicure or the purchase of a book you have wanted to read.  For us mommies it could be a  5 hours of Solitude, or a Day at the SPA.  Just Remember Rewards need planning.

    4)   Use Aromatherapy:  Studies show that the sense of smell has a direct connection to our emotional center. This means when you smell certain smells they can make you happy. So oils like Peace and Calming or Joy oil can be used as a perfume so you smell a feel great throughout the day.  Or Peppermint could be diffused in the kitchen if you are on a diet.  Peppermint has been scientifically proven to tell your brain your full.

    5)   Expect Success:  Sometimes when I consult with a chronically ill client, someone who has been sick for many years or months and has tried everything they have an attitude that “this is not going to work”.   I have to deny clients consulting because I know if they think in their minds this is not going to work then it is not going to work for them.   So no matter how many times you have tried other weight loss programs, or exercise classes, or supplements to get out of pain DON'T GIVE UP, and DON'T EXPECT FAILURE.

So remember plan for the middle miles.  No that you are going to lapse but when you do have Grace and get back up.  Have specific Rewards that will help you Stay on Track. Make it Fun to be in the Middle miles and use things like Aromatherapy.   And lastly expect and have an attitude of Success.

    Have you been mis-diagnosed?

By | Chronic Illness, Dr Mary Starr, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | 2 Comments

    Have you been mis-diagnosed?

    By Dr. Mary Starr Carter

For the past 5 years at least a minimum of 2 times a week I consult with new clients who I soon learn were mis-diagnosed. Being misdiagnosed can lead to frustration, pain, and worse disability.

Here are a few examples of clients who were misdiagnosed:

55 year old female with incontinence was told she needed bladder surgery. Surgery failed…. it wasn't until they realized her estrogen was so low that it was causing weakness in the bladder.

60 year old female spent 25 years on over 12 medications resulting in pain, constant respiratory issues, and a 50lb weight gain. The side effects of her medications were causing high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, respiratory issues, and blood sugar issues. After 1 year of recovery she is off all but 1 medication, has released 15lbs, has more energy and is way happier.

34 year old man with painful boils was misdiagnosed with skin issues and spent thousands on medications and specialists, including skin grafting surgery. After 1- $200 Wellness Coaching session the core problem leading to the skin issues was discovered.

But the most common mis-diagnosis I see in practice has to do with the Thyroid. More than 20 million Americans suffer from either an overactive or an underactive thyroid gland. As many as half the cases of thyroid disease in the United States go undiagnosed. So many times our clients have seen the doctor and the tests that the doctor orders come back with normal results. The clients have obvious symptoms of under active or overactive thyroid function but yet are mis-diagnosed as having levels in the normal range. Like Debbie who is obese not because she eats too much or doesn't exercise, she is obese because her thyroid, which regulates her metabolism, is not functioning properly.

There are many reasons why the thyroid will not function properly. On Tuesday August 23rd we will review some of those reasons. But first let's talk about how you could be misdiagnosed.

    1. The proper tests were not ordered

    2. The doctor is using older values of norm.

    3. They are looking for disease you are experiencing dysfunction

    4. The body is compensating.

    5. You are not in failure yet.

    6. Medication side effects

    7. Stress

    8. Everyone is not the same.

    9. Foods

All of these things could potentially be hiding the problem. With the thyroid, just like many other organs, dysfunction can go undetected before disease happens. Often times if we can catch a client in the dysfunctional stage total correction is possible. If we wait until it is diseased we may only be able to reduce symptoms by 30-60%.

If you are struggling with fatigue, weight gain, inability to release weight no matter what you do, depression, anxiety, always cold, lack of motivation, insomnia, allergies, or moodiness then you may want to join us Saturday July 30th at 12 noon EST when we review the Total Wellness an approach to identify and determine thyroid dysfunction and a simple protocol to get back on track with your TOTAL WELLNESS.

Although we always make sure the physical needs are always met the emotional and spiritual needs are just as important. A tip from from Part II  Support Systems a daily check in by phone  or visit once a day  can be helpful to a person who is home bound and doesn't have a chance to interact with anyone all day. I have noticed with my elderly single family members that having a visit or phone call to look forward too can be very positive to their emotional health.

Tip #1)  Daily Check ins or visits

My 90 year old aunt who lives alone makes us a meal once a week. She enjoys delivering it not just to see us but to see my 1 year old son. She has been able to see him grow up these past 15 months and it has been a great joy to her. Although she is not sick I do believe this has been very helpful to her.

When visiting my dad in the Rehab Facility after his knee operation  I would bring my little son. Not only did it brighten his day but also everyone Else's.

Tip #2)  Furry Friends:   They say pets can be extremely healing for a person.  Although some pets may be difficult to care for someone with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, or someone who is bed bound still pets like cats take little maintenance and can be very healing. I know when I don't feel good and my cat comes and kneads and lays on my belly I just feel better.

Tip # 6) Set Boundaries. Have the primary care giver give clear explanations and boundaries. What you can do or not do, when you sleep, what you need, how to speak positively over you. This helps everyone and is soooo good for your Emotional Well Being.

An example of a conversation might be, “ Aunt Dorothy Mary really isn't suppose to be going up and down the stairs, but she is hard headed and is embarrassed about asking for help. When you come over can you make sure to check in with her and bring her water and ask her if there is anything else she needs. “

Tip #7 ) Social media (Facebook) the good and the bad:

I found Facebook to be a saving grace after the birth of my son. With my mind half gone and my body not cooperating Facebook allowed for a distraction from my woes. I didn't get on and complain or visit support groups I just tuned out. Support groups can be helpful but I will warn you especially my recovering Fribromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue clients, “DO NOT SPEND MORE THAN 10 minutes a day on those types of Support Groups” . Why? Frankly because those people are not you and on those sites you will hear 90% depressing messages about the disease and very little about the recovery. It can very easily turn a switch on in your brain that says maybe I am not getting better. So to avoid that limit your time.

    Tip #8) Entertainment

Entertainment is important for both the disabled individual, the family and caregivers. If you can not turn off for a little while everyday it can lead to burn out and further health crisis. I encourage people to pick something they really look forward to. Maybe it is a favorite Soap Opera, CSI, or Star Trek re-runs those can all be beneficial as long as they are used as a once a day one or two hours of tune out. If you are going to watch movies pick a uplifting, funny comedy or something that will make you laugh. Don't forget reading, books on CD, inspirational sermons or uplifting music. My favorite was to listen to the nationally syndicated radio station K-Love .

    Tip #9 ) Keep a routine.

In some serious illnesses unfortunately routines are needed for medications and daily medical procedures. In other cases like Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue you may be lucky to have enough energy to do the dishes everyday. I don't mean you have to stick to a strict schedule but keep a routine with your approximate wake up, food, nutritional supplements, time with your children, spouse, entertainment, naps etc. This will help you with boundaries too. For example if the family knows 3-5pm is mommy's rest time then no one should be allowed in your room at that time.

Tip #10) Staying involved with your faith.

This was crucial in clients who are in the recovery stage. If you can not get to your church each week, see if a recording would be available for you. Make sure to utilize the healing ministries at your church or seek them out. Remember when we are the weakest He is the strongest. Having Faith in God can be quite comforting, as well as reading the Bible. It is full of stories of deliverance and healing.

    Tip #11)  Miracles still happen

Since 2007 I have personally witnessed over one dozen miraculous healings. Healings where the client had Fibromyalgia who was hospitalized monthly and in a day was delivered from her illness. I have sat in the hospital next to a friend who was literally at death's door and miraculously is healthy and healed today. I have seen heart conditions healed. I have witnessed a woman in debilitating pain, on 5 different pain medications and in a wheelchair throw their wheelchair away and get off all pain medications.  I have seen Stage 4 Bladder Cancer healed.

God healed all these people, miraculously. I am a skeptic and very scientific and had I not witnessed them myself may not believe. But I will tell you all these people had an amazing faith and believed that God would heal them….. and He did.

So if there is one thing I can tell you in all my years of working with those who are sick is this….  Believe with all your heart that you can get better and you can be healed and then let go and see what doors God opens for you.  For some those doors will be miraculous healing for others they will be resources and ways to recover.

I believe you can recover and have Total Wellness. Do you?

Part II in our Total Health Support Systems: The Home and Family Support System

By | Total Health Support Systems, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | 3 Comments

Stressful times require extra help. Whether it is a health crisis or extra work at your job both can cause stress on the family. Instead of turning to junk food and a messy house think outside the box.

Whether you have small kids or are single everyone should have ….

Tool #2 A Home and Family Support System

This Tool works best if it is set up before you need it.  I know it will be more of a challenge to do this when you live away from friends and family but I encourage you to begin looking now.  I promise you being prepared will help the stress an illness can put on a family.

This system is based about Cleaning, Cooking, Childcare, Sick person Care, and Transportation.  Again your Resource List will be helpful in setting this system up.

Tip #1) Recruit elderly relatives, friends or neighbors.  There are many older retired individuals who are feeling alone and useless, yet they still can be helpful to so many if given the chance.  Find a family member who loves to cook, or run errands, or watch your children.  This not only will help you but can help them too.

Tip #2) Recruit out of town friends and family to be a part of your Phone Call Check in Support System. Sadly in my town just 2 months ago a young single mom and her baby were found dead in their apartment because of lack of check in support. The mom died of a hereditary illness and since no one was checking up on them the 4 month old baby died too of neglect. How awful huh?! One simple phone call could have avoided that.

Tip #3) Teenager or College Student Support System.  Set up a local teenage neighbor looking to earn a few extra bucks and would be happy to come over do the dishes, clean up the kitchen, or help prepare meals. For those of you who are really busy and need help this is great because it gives you extra time with your kids and you won't be too exhausted if you have to do work after the kids go to sleep.

I have used this support system for years and it is helpful.  Be sure to set clear expectations, wages and performance standards.  Using their cellphone and texting every other minute is not appropriate while working for you. Maintaining a positive and pleasant attitude.  And the list goes on.  Be sure that they also understand that if they do not meet these standards you will terminate their arrangement.   (Don't forget to discuss this with the parents too. )

As you can tell I have learned through the years. Treat them well, honor them as adults, pay them well for work done well.

Tip #4) Look for local stay at home mommies who may want some extra cash. Having a mommy you trust pick up your kids, or cook double dinners, one for their home and one for yours, do some lite cleaning and the list goes on. It depends on your needs and theirs.

If you are thinking you can't afford that right now I want you to re-think that statement because you are forgetting that your energy is VALUABLE.  Remember your time and energy are worth something.   Spending $10 extra a week to have a meal made for you, a night of no dishes, extra family time, and less stress can be more valuable to  you then you think.

Tip #5) Transportation: When a Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue client is so weak they can't drive themselves to Doctor appointments or even to the store then the burden usually falls on the spouse.  This can cause many sick days to be eaten up or even time without pay if the spouse is working.  So go through your Resource list and see who could help with transportation.  Again be sure to honor them with gratitude and gas money.  Many giving people refuse an exchange and it is okay to receive but if you have to use them multiple times find a way to honor them. Sometimes a simple thank you card is sufficient.

Tip #6)  Childcare Sick person Care  Be sure of you and your spouse are clear on who can watch your children and who can't.  Even if that means you may have to send your kids for a week or so away to be properly cared for with someone you fully trust.  Leaving your children is really hard. So don't put yourself in a position where you have to worry, prepare ahead of time.

Also look and see who may have experience in helping someone sick, injured, recovering from surgery or could help take care of you if you needed them.

Be sure your have your HOME AND FAMILY LIST in a few different places so your spouse and or family member could help you put your Support System into place if and when you need it.

Remember your Home and Family are very important but so are you. You are hurting, injured, recovering, or suffering with a Chronic Illness like Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue. You must make sure you have resources set up for you.  If you are hurting and haven't found answers we would like the opportunity to help you find some answers.  Our Wellness Coaching programs help those who are lost in a Health Care puzzle get on a path to Total Wellness. Financial Support Systems before you need them

By | Newsletter | One Comment

    Setting up a Support System

    before you need it.

    Tool 1 & 2 :

    Your Resources

    and Financial Support System

Since 2008 I have been serving a special niche of clients who have serious health issues that require me to live with them for a few days or a few weeks. During the time I spend with them I set up support systems for their physical health and train other family members to perform some of the healing techniques they will need during their recovery. I learned from both my local clients and these live in clients that without Financial, Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Support Systems most people will fail to recover completely.

Here are the first of the Support Systems to Set up before you NEED THEM.

It is said by the age of 25 an average person knows or has met 2000 people. Your first support tool may sound extreme but it is a tool I have used in many areas of life.

Tool #1: Your Resource List : Your resource list is a written out list of 200 of friends, family members and acquaintances.

Be sure to get as many addresses phone numbers and emails as possible on your list. Having several copies will be important if something happens and you need help.

Tip #1 : I encourage you to connect with your resources before you need them. See how they are doing, if they are in need or if there is anything you can do for them. As Guy Kawasaki says, “Help others before you need their help.” Here is a link to print out a blank Resource list that we use in business but you can use here too. Knowing who your resources are important to your entire Support System Set up.

Our second Tool comes from the fact that without a plan way to many people run into hot water when they lose income, can not work, or an unforseen disaster comes their way. Maxing out credit cards or worse utilizing pay day loans can get people into hot water.

Tool # 2 : Your Financial Support System

Tip #2:  Start a Health Savings Plan . Talk with financial experts about a Health Savings fund that you could utilize for Specialty treatments. Most Natural Health Sessions and some Specialty Doctors are not covered under even the best insurances.

Tip #3:  Utilize Tax Deductions for Medical Expenses, Supplementation, Foods, Conferences, Mileage and more. (talk to a Good Tax Professional ahead of time so you know what counts and what doesn't)

Tip #4: Invest in Wellness Care and Nutritional Supplementation.  It has been proven over and over that regular Chiropractic Care, Massage Therapy and Exercise Classes not only can keep your body healthy and happy longer but also can save you lots of money on sick care. Insurance Companies are even offering discounts and kickbacks for those who participate in Wellness Care, Gym Memberships, and even take regular Supplementation.

Remember your HEALTH IS YOUR NUMBER ONE INVESTMENT!

Tip #5: Consider the Good Debt Bad Debt Principal. If you hurt your back and $350 of Chiropractic Care can get you back working in 3 weeks versus 3 months of being out of work wouldn't investing on a credit card the $350 be worth it so you could make back that money quicker vs continue to lose income.

Tip #6:  Save some of your PTO (Paid Time off ,Vacation or Sick Days) every year from work. Then if something happens it is a little less stressful on everyone and if you don't use them you get more time off in December.

Tip #7) Credit Cards versus Low Interest Person to Person Loan:  If it comes to having to use Credit Card debt to pay expenses you would be surprised at how many people out there are willing to offer lower interest loans versus 24% high interest credit cards and even worse Pay Day Loans. Start asking people on your Resource list if before you take on a loan with 24% interest if they would be interested in a 10% loan agreement. I bet you can't get through the first 100 people without finding someone who is willing to do that.

Tip #8:  Consider a Home Business Before or After: I always see this fund-raiser or that fund-raiser for individuals who have serious illness and are in financial need. Although I think these things are important for social and community support I don't believe they raise the income a home business could do passively in most cases. A home business either started in their name or something someone ill could work from home who is not receiving disability could significantly change their financial stress.

Tip #9: Financial Understanding : Make sure if you have a spouse that they understand and can take care of the finances if you become disabled. If you are single be sure your have what I call a Financial Proxy (a person you trust and you have clearly explained your financial records or how to access them just in case). Or even a Power of Attorney. Power of Attorney is a legal document giving the authority to act for another person in legal or financial matters.

Tip #10: Savings for a Time like This:  Some financial experts say you need at least 3 months of household expenses in your savings others say 6 months and even others say two years.  I don't know all I do know is the clients who don't have to worry about their financial status very much when health challenges come are the ones to recover the quickest.

I appreciate you taking the time to read about these Tools for your Health Crisis Support Systems, but more importantly I would feel much better if you started implementing them before you need them.

    Thank you.

What if your Health Failed you…. the Importance of a Support System

    By | Newsletter | 2 Comments
What would happen if your health failed you?
The importance of a Support System

The formal definition of a support system is a network of personal and professional contacts available to a person or organization for practical or moral support when needed.

My definition a support system are individuals that provide professional or practical assistance to you in times of need.

I have had to rely on my support system quite a bit during some recent health challenges, so I know the subject of support systems all to well.

I have learned that having help is not a sign of weakness or laziness but rather a way to eliminate stress, allow your body to heal and when I am healthy be more productive to do my main jobs.

What would you do if tomorrow you were bed ridden and could not go to work, pick up your children, or fix your own meals ?

Do you have the support systems in your life to survive or even flourish?

The end of March 2010 I spent 4 days in labor at a hospital with sleep only lasting 20 minutes at a time. After the birth I started to hemorrhage and lost enough blood to need to be given fluids. After a few visitors I got a full night's rest. The rest along with the fluids  made me feel like a million bucks ………artificially………….. or so I thought compared to how I felt with no sleep.  So feeling good I decided I would make the decisions about how long I stayed in the hospital because I was a doctor.  So I strong armed them in letting me go home 24 hrs after the birth. What a BIG MISTAKE !!

The first night home I refused help and said I would care for my son all night. My milk was not coming in so me and Joshua were becoming stressed out. To make a long and very painful lesson short for several weeks I contributed to the deterioration of my body and mind by trying to “Stay in Control” and not allowing help.

14 months later I still was not 100% and unfortunately just suffered a miscarriage. But I know this too is in God's plan and His lessons for me.

When you lose your health or have an incident where you are not able to “do it all” having a support system in place is crucial.

After our recent miscarriage just a few phone calls and emails allowed people to fill-in and help with our businesses, classes, lectures, cleaning ,cooking, child care, our emotional and spiritual health, and physical recovery. What a difference this all made for me for getting on the road to Total Wellness!

Now think about your Support Systems… What are they? Next article we will look at how to Set up a Support System before you need it :Tips and Tools to get you through the hard times , Physically, Emotionally and Spiritually.

Gluten Intolerance & Pain : Could there be a connection?

Gluten Intolerance & Pain : Could there be a connection?

    By Mari Ann Lisenbe

July 10th, 2002. That's the date I received my diagnosis:  "Severe gluten sensitivity, leaky-gut syndrome & candida overgrowth".

How could this be? In my quest to feel better, I'd even become a vegan. I was eating lots of fresh fruits, veggies and healthy, whole grains. I had become regular health-food nut!

Becoming a vegan, I'd lost a ton of weight. But also, I was losing bone mass. And the pain was getting worse.

    "OK. Where's the truck?"

That's the question I'd wake up asking every morning.

Surely that's what happened. If I hadn't been hit by a truck, why did I hurt so badly?

    Groggy Head.

Draw a very hot bath, and soak at least 30 minutes so I could face the world.

And, the crazy body aches was just one part of it.

I had excruciating bouts with cramping. And constipation.  It had even gotten to the point where I was regularly performing soap-suds enemas just to get rid of the bloating.

So, here I was again. Back in another doctor's office on my never ending quest to try to find out why I felt so miserable.

And she tells me I need to get off wheat? AND all those other "healthy" whole grains I'd been filling my body with?

How could it be so simple? I'd spent the last 20 years going to doctors in attempts to find out why I hurt. Gastroenterologists. Neurologists. Orthopedics. Gynecologists. Allergists. Pain management clinics.

How could they have missed something so basic? So simple.

But I was desperate, so I decided to listen to this new doctor's recommendations and eliminate all grains from my diet. Not just wheat, but all grains (including corn).

And, within 3 weeks, I felt as though I'd been given my life back.

I've spent the last 10 years learning about gluten and it's devastating effects on the body.

For one thing, you do not have to have "celiac disease" to experience problems with gluten. I didn't, and that is why the gastroenterologists missed it. They were looking for signs of celiac.

Gluten sensitivity causes inflammation in your body. And, the inflammation does not just manifest in your gut. It can manifest in pain all over your body. In my case, it caused excruciating leg pain, swelling, bloating and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Gluten is also linked to neurological disorders. This is one reason why "brain fog" goes away when you eliminate gluten from your diet.

Now, "gluten free" has become the new buzz-word. In a way this is good because people are becoming aware of problems with gluten.

However, many of the so-called "gluten free" products you see everywhere now, are not really gluten free!  They are only "wheat-gluten" free.

And, that is why many people go on a "gluten-free" diet, but don't see all their symptoms go away.

You see, every grain (including rice) contains it's own form of gluten. Even corn. ESPECIALLY corn!

In fact, corn gluten is often one of the biggest offenders, and it is added to many products in the form of "malto-dextrin".

So, even if you're reading labels, you may miss some of the hidden forms of gluten lurking in your foods. You have to learn all the hidden things to look for.

Why is this? Why are people suddenly becoming gluten sensitive when grains have been consumed for thousands of years?

It's quite possibly because of the hybridization of grains. Genetic selection and sometimes actual genetic modification produces grains that are vastly different than they were 200 years ago. Genetic modification of corn has become so prominent that unless the corn you buy specifically says "USDA Certified Organic", you can safely assume that it is GMO corn!

If you experience Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Crones, IBS, Carpal Tunnel, or neurological problems, let me encourage you to try going gluten free for at least 3 weeks.

    – No grains (not even rice). This means no flour, or products made from flour, too. Eliminate breads, pastas, rice, corn, corn chips, tortillas, etc. You really can get by with out this things for 3 weeks!

    – Read labels. If the product contains malto-dextrin, MSG, monosodium glutamate, "natural flavors", or any obvious form of grain…put it back!

    – At the end of 3 weeks, begin adding back 1 grain at a time.

Begin with quinoa since this is usually the least offensive grain. Then, try brown rice, corn, oats…waiting at least 4 days between the time you add a new grain. If you notice any of your old symptoms returning, eliminate that grain.

Being gluten free does not necessarily mean remaining bread free. Many people who are gluten sensitive can tolerate sprouted grains. The most commonly known sprouted grain products are by "Food for Life", the makers of Ezekiel Bread. However, there are many others. Just look for the words "made with sprouted grains".

There are also many truly gluten free recipes for products made with almond meal and or coconut flour. With many of these, you'd never guess that the muffin you're eating doesn't contain even an ounce of grain!

For overall good health, you should continue to be fanatical about reading labels.

This new way of eating may take a little getting used to, but feeling good again is worth the effort.  You can do it!

Moving your body regularly is one of the best things that you can do for your health.  In previous posts, I have emphasized that the human body is a perfect motion machine.  It is designed to move; to run and jump and hunt and gather.  Our current modern day world has taken many of us away from the motion that our body needs.

    Angels Among Us

By | Fibromyalgia, Mind and Soul, Total Wellness, Wellness Coaching | No Comments

Angels – The Body Guards that walk with me

    By Angela Brooks

I was raised in a small Methodist church out in the country where my family have always attended. I grew up hearing about angels and how they watch over us but had never had an angel experience, until I began working in  a state funded mental hospital.

As I drive to work, usually in the peace and quiet of the car – I use my time for prayer with God. I want Him to walk alongside me as I go into an environment that is so unpredictable.

On many occasions I will ask in prayer to be covered with a protective shield before I reach the unit. There are times I have been confirmed that it was answered by a client on the unit or an event that shows up.

After a long week of very difficult clients I dreaded coming into work this particular day. I felt drained going in. As I stepped on the unit a long term client who I have worked with over the years came in this admission in worse shape than normal for him. He had sat on the hall talking to his internal stimuli most of the time with little interaction to the staff.

This day as I stepping on the unit he came walking straight to me and I stopped because we had direct eye contact. He said, "Mrs Angie can I tell you something?" I said, "Sure how can I help you?" He says, "Mrs Angie when I see you walk on the unit. I know I am going to be ok. I said, "Thank you I appreciate that." He goes on to say, "You remind me of a light house." I turned my head – smiled and stated, "Really why is that" He speaks very clear and very sincere as he continues to explain. "A light house is a safe place for those that are out to sea. When the boat is rocking back and forth in rough water the sailors begin looking for the light. I see that in you. A bright light that shines all over this town reaching others. But your light is going to reach more than this town – it will reach way out into the world and others will see you. Thank you for taking care of me when I am sick." He turned and walked back down the hall way to his room. We did not talk any more that shift.

I was speechless. Actually I had to step across the hall in private to wipe my tears because he had just answered the prayer I had spoken in the van on the way to work less than 10 minutes before. I had dreaded coming to work that day and my prayer was – God just let me be a light to one person. Let that person see you in me.

When we have a disturbed client we have a buzzer than will sound called a 'Code D' all available staff will go to that area to assist on that unit. Most the time when a client sees a large group of people entering the unit they will stop on their own.

This young man around the age of 23 years old began throwing chairs. Raging until the staff felt he was out of control and called a code D. The buzzer sounded and the unit number was given over the loud speaker. You could hear people running across the floors above and doors opening and slamming closed as staff ran to that area.

When you go to a high risk situation you have no idea what will be waiting on the other side of the cold steel door. You put your key in the lock, turn the key and step in to the unknown. As I run to these situations I am asking for 10,000 angels to show up and go with me for protection for the client and the staff so that no one gets hurt. That is our main goal, safety.

I opened the door and locked eyes with the young man we were going to assist. He stopped, leaned back against the wall, slid down to a sitting position on the floor. We began talking to him to see what was going on. He became very cooperation with the staff and walked to his room to receive medication the doctor had ordered.

Later that evening I went back to check on him and see how the medication was helping. He was standing at the desk talking to the staff. He turned to me and said, "Did I hurt you earlier?" I answered, "No one was hurt how are you feeling?" He stated, "I am feeling better why did you have to bring those great big men with you? I looked at him puzzled and questioned him, "I do not remember any one walking in with me. I came alone. What men are you talking about? He said, "They were big guys that came in with you and pushed me to the ground.

It did not dawn on me until later who those men were. They were my body guards that I did not hire, but they walk with me. Angels really do walk among us.

Another gentleman that comes to mind has a long history of hurting the nurses that work with him. He stands 5'10 around 250 lbs. In 21 years not to many of the men give me the good ole creeps. He did. I did not walk close to him when out on the hall. This evening we were watching a movie with the clients.I stood against the wall because I felt more comfortable with him still awake on the unit. There was another male sitting in a chair between us and he leans over to speak to me.

His eyes carried a darkness and his smile looked so evil he said, "I ain't gonna mess with you." I looked at him and questioned him "What did you say?" He said again. "I am not going to hurt you. You always walk around with your big ole guards." The other client sitting between us smiled and snickered as he glanced at me listening to this man speak. There was no one standing beside me. No other staff. No other clients. Just me. I smiled and stated "Thank you, I am glad you feel that way." From that day forward – he walked on the other side of the hall from me.

Another Angel spoke, After a long hard stressful night another staff member and I were walking through the connecting unit to go to our cars. A lady sitting in a chair at the end of the hall close to the door sat rocking back and forth. I have never spoken to this lady before. I did not know her name. All I had ever seen her do was rock. Both of us were walking mentally exhausted from all the drama that had happened during the night and I was wondering to myself how could anything that had happened really helped anyone in those 13 hours. When the rocking lady looked up – not really gaining eye contact but looking upward and said, "God said, you did good ladies." She looked back down and went back to rocking. I smiled, looked up and said "Thank you".

Do you have angels that walk with you? Tell me about it by leaving a comment below. I want to hear your story.

Depression: Putting Yourself Last Causes Depression

Depression: Putting Yourself Last Causes Depression

    By Angela Brooks

Most women are doing too much, expecting too much, influenced by crap and were never taught to take care of themselves. As a mom of two handsome young men, I am guilty for putting myself last in taking care of myself and making plans for my own personal growth.

Guilt sets in when plans are made without the boys or my husband involved, feeling as if I am selfishly taken time away from my family. When in fact – when I do invest in myself, I give them a happier, better mom and wife.

Over the years women have been taught and some expected to take care of the children, the household chores,, the meals, errands for the household, take children to their activities. Plus in today's average families, also work a full 40 hour a week job. No wonder so many women are worn out, out of shape and depressed.

Unresolved anger, and fear cause women to drop out of the game and let their own needs go without realizing how it is making them feel. After taking care of a full plate of everyone else's needs they give the excuse of being too tired or it is to late. It becomes a form of self abuse, almost as if they are the sacrifice for everyone else to succeed.

    Putting Yourself Last Causes Depression

Expecting yourself to fill the shoes of wonder mom leaves you feeling empty and frustrated. Magazines and Television show moms with a baby on their hip, dressed for business, talking on the phone and smiling. The real truth in – one person cannot do it all without burn out.

Very few women are taught how to take care of themselves; most are influenced with so much crap the focus is taken away from their own health and needs. Leaving mom agitated and tired.

When I began my home business, I was working full time at night, multi-tasking on very little sleep. Attending the boys activities and not taken any time away from the rush of the daily events for me. I began falling apart at the seams and stayed frustrated. I pulled back and had to make a decision quick before mom popped like a balloon. Investing into my own personal growth, exercising – education for my business and branching out to a whole new outlook. I began to change how I was thinking.

After returning from a mastermind event with a group of talented women it shifted my thinking about me and my business – My husband gave me the best compliment I could ever have received. "You have a new business and I have a new wife." The smile had returned to my face. I felt happier than I have been in a long time.

Why? Because I took time for me and my dream.

Women need to step out of the dirty laundry room and re-discover who they are. Over the years, as I observe and listen to not only the patients at the hospital, but the nurses on the unit as well. Frustration is a common conversation around the water cooler. A lot of women feel that when they have children and get married all their dreams have to be placed on the back burner or forgotten. Within a few short years or working in robot mode – people begin to see a changed person.

    Who Am I?

I always think about the older lady who came to the hospital, whom for 30 plus years had served her husband and her children. She ran the household like a business. When her husband came home from work one day and told her it was over. She was devastated. She had no idea who she was without the role she had lived for all of those years. She had lost herself taking care of her family. To her surprise she had a serious wakeup call on her life. Who am I?

Don't wait until you're so worn out, out of shape, depressed before you start living. When you live a full life those around you will benefit from your new joy. Stop worrying about not being enough, or what people will think, (I mean who really cares anyway), forget the rejection, no one will notice if your clothes are ironed or your hair is perfect. When you give others your control, you're allowing them to determine yourself worth. Start a journal today and you will amaze yourself what you will learn about YOU.

    Know, Need and Want

    KNOW, NEED and WANT

    by Dr. Mary Starr Carter

If you are struggling with a Health Challenge ask yourself the following Questions

    1. Do I KNOW how to improve this condition?
    2. What do I NEED to do?
    3. What do I WANT to or What will I CHOOSE To Do?

    KNOWING

For the past 15 years  I have been submerged in Health through school, practice, and working with pioneers in the nutritional field. Many times I will learn about a new breakthrough or discovery years before it becomes mainstream. My clients will listen, learn and apply the information but it usually takes my family and friends to hear it on the nightly news or if Dr. Oz says it that they start to believe me.

I am constantly learning but I forget that not everyone has access or knowledge of what I know. I sometimes get shocked when I will be having discussions with intelligent college educated friends and they still believe diet soda is safe to drink or some other really bad nutritional choice.

If you didn't know diet sodas are bad for you that is okay it is kind of covered up by the fact that a little bit once and a while won't hurt you but unfortunately most people are not drinking or eating a little bit.

If you would like to learn more about Sugar free sodas and food and how it effects our health read the book The Crazy Makers: How the Food Industry Is Destroying Our Brains and Harming Our Children Carol Simontacchi. Here is an excerpt from the book: "One liter of an aspartame-sweetened beverage can produce about fifty-six milligrams of methanol. When several of these beverages are consumed in a short period of time (one day, perhaps), as much as two hundred fifty milligrams of methanol are dumped into the bloodstream, or thirty-two times the EPA limit."

(I promise I will do a blog on artificial sweeteners because I believe some of the Fibromyalgia out there is caused from these dangerous substances. )

    NEEDs and WANTs

A close family member battled prostate cancer. I sat at a table with him having dinner talking about celebrating his 70th birthday and I cheered to 30 more years, he stated oh no I will be happy for 12 years. I sat there a little shocked and after thinking why wouldn't everyone want to live to 100 years old. It wasn't that he didn't want to live to 100 years old he just wanted to live his life how he wanted too. He loved beer and food and that wasn't going to change. He knew he wasn't going to change his ways and that for the past 15 years his health had been deteriorating from it. Gout, arthritis, back issues, acid reflux, skin cancer and now prostate cancer. He knew he NEEDED to change his ways. But he didn't WANT to.

In contrast a recent client got lab tests back showing she had both liver and thyroid dysfunction. She researched sought out professional and nutritional education and made the decision to change her life. She was sick and tired of being obese, having difficulty breathing and sleeping from her weight and lifestyle choices. SHE WANTED A CHANGE and made the CHOICES to change. On a limited single mom's income she is investing almost a 1/3 of her monthly income on the right foods and nutritional supplementation that will improve her health. Her commitment to her health is inspiring ! No excuses why she can't do it, just moving towards getting her life back. She NEEDED to change and she WANTED to change.

As Health professionals, Spouses, Parents, or Care Takers we may KNOW that our loved one NEEDS to drink more water, get out and exercise, stop eating so much sugar etc but they may not WANT too.

You may feel frustrated with that loved one, but I am going to ask you to have ACCEPTANCE for their choices. (If you need help with ACCEPTANCE I recommend the Serentiy prayer )

After 8 years as a Health Professional I realized my job is just to educate the client so they know, then it is their choice to decide what they are going to do. Some do nothing, some do some of the recommendations and others follow their health plans. I am not here to judge your choices just to educate and provide them.

So again if you are struggling with a Health Challenge ask yourself the following Questions

    1. Do I KNOW how to improve this condition?
    2. What do I NEED to do?
    3. What do I WANT to or What will I CHOOSE To Do?

If you don't know how to improve your condition or what you need to do then go to Wellness Coaching and let's see if we can help you.

    Sugar Addiction: My Story

    By | Wellness Coaching | 2 Comments

    I am a sugar addict!

I come from an Italian family where food and desserts are just part of your culture. Every birthday, holiday, get together is centered around food and desserts. I also grew up where dessert was an every night thing instead of a occasional treat.

My sugar addiction really grew when I was 9 years old and candy, cookies and ice cream were my weekly reward for having a good piano class. I grew to associate sugary treats with a job well done.

When I got my license and a job OHHH Boy did we run wild. Ice Cream Flurry's, getting food here and there, celebrating with food, using food as a filler when we were bored, or if were upset. Later when more stress came into my life sugar seemed to help that too.

I never looked at food for it's purpose FUEL. Although I never had an eating disorder I definitely had some food dysfunction.

In college I had my first wake up call to what I was doing to my body. I suffered from allergies, insomnia, and headaches all of which my sugar addiction contributed to.

It was about my 4th trimester in Chiropractic School after spending over a year intimately understanding the human body and physiology I learned that sugar could be just as harmful as cigarettes or alcohol. YIKES. Tooth decay, pancreas, liver, and even brain damage, digestive stress, heart disease, obesity and the list goes on..

In 2009 the Journal of Nutrition published research showing sugar is addictive. It also showed that bingeing on sugar can cause withdrawal symptoms and cravings. The behavioral effects are similar to the neurochemical changes in the brain that also occur with addictive drugs like heroine and morphine.

Bingeing on sugar literally can increase your endorphins or happy hormones…. but it is short lived. Just like many drugs sugar will bring you high and then you quickly fall low and stay in a blood sugar low until spiked back up again by feeding the sugar monster. This process of up and down is extremely damaging to the body and actually makes you age faster than if you did not have these constant highs and lows. It is also a major cause of depression or what I like to call the Sugar Blues.

Once I understood what sugar was doing to my body I started to use Nutritional Supplements and Therapeutic Essential oils to break my sugar habit. One product that totally helped me get through the afternoon cravings was NingXia Red . I would take one or two ounces of NingXia Red and I had no desire for a cookie or candy bar. NingXia Red is a fruit juice that is fortified with natural vitamins and minerals plus it has 18 amino acids. Those amino acids helped me to maintain my blood sugar and not crave the sweets. Interestingly that today if I don't do my NingXia Red I will start to crave the sugar's again.

As I believe that Total Wellness is Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual I also addressed the emotional reasons for eating sugar, and had an amazing spiritual deliverance experience that helped me break the sugar addiction. Today even when I fall off the wagon for weeks or even months it no longer has the hold on me it once did.

My clients especially Fibromyalgia and pain clients do exceptionally well with a very low sugar diet.  Spiking blood sugar also causes inflammation and pain in the body.

Today I know when I fall off my nutritional regimen and am not getting all the vitamins and minerals I need I will start craving sugar. Or if I let myself have sugar day after day it will weaken my body to the point I will want it every day again.

Right now, May 31st 2011 I am in that sugar cycle again but I have committed to release sugar for 90 days. Not an easy task. We will talk about in another blog all the hidden places sugar hides in your diet.

I am committed to quit. Now I will do natural sugars but I will limit those too. I know I will be successful because I have done it in the past. I have more ambition right now because there is a little life growing in my belly. It has been proven in women who eat a lot of sugar during their pregnancies their children will grow up to have sugar preferences too. I am not going to set my child up for a life of bad health. I am ready to take control of my health how about you?

Self Care for Health: Part II Junk in the Trunk

By | Dr Mary Starr, Fibromyalgia | One Comment

What is Junk in the Trunk? ….

When a person harbors bad feelings about past circumstances it can result in result in “Junk” in their body. Junk are behaviors, habits, emotional states, and even physiological processes that are not good. Junk in our Trunk can build up from past abuse, abandonment, adultery, deception, trauma, the loss of a loved one, a period of lack, loss of trust and the list goes on. Little or big, awful or horrific terrible things happen and each of us will process it differently. What do I mean by process? The body and brain will take an experience let's call it a seed and grow a tree of emotions, habits, behaviors and real physiological reactions. Here is an example; Kathy * when she was 2 or 3 year old getting potty trained was severely spanked for pooping her pants. This resulted in 45 years of constipation issues.

    An Experience is a SEED

This experience (or seed) when she was 2 or 3 developed into a belief which developed into a bodily behavior. Don't believe me ? Stop now and think about an experience you had as a kid that has now resulting in a behavior of yours.

Kelly * was chased by her brothers with dead and living snakes when she was a kid. As a result she is petrified of snakes today. She can not even watch them on TV without freaking out. Her experiences resulted in a tree of Fear of snakes.

A SEED grows into a TREE

Another example from a client Sue * who at the age of two was mentally abandoned by her mother when her mother lost her baby at birth. From the age of 2 years to 3 and half years Sue had physical care but no love or affection from her mother. As a result she developed a series of bad behaviors, poor relationships, and mental disorders that were diagnosed as Post Traumatic Disorder, Bi-Polar, Detachment Disorder, Borderline Disorder and the list goes on all from this experience of abandonment.

    YOU CAN GET BETTER

After 10 years of drug addiction, jail and loss of custody of her children Sue was transformed into a healthy happy woman.

Kelly although she doesn't like them can tolerate snakes now.

And Kathy well let's just say she doesn't have a problem going the bathroom any more.

Do you wonder how these woman and hundreds like them after decades of dysfunctional behaviors recovered?

    PULLING OUT THE ROOTS

They didn't just identify the seeds they pulled out the roots. Think about it…. did you know a tree cut down but the roots left can eventually grow another tree.

Again my opinion only and you can disagree. I believe psychology looks at the experiences and seeds, identifies, manages behaviors, understands behaviors and symptoms but does not have a tool to PULL OUT THE ROOTS.

My practice and Wellness Coaching doesn't pull out roots either but we do refer to others that do. One seminar I refer clients to is called First Steps to Success. Over 100 clients I have sent through this system all have come out saying how much lighter and healthier they feel. Here are the stories of two clients who attended this seminar and got the roots out:

Andrea*  released over 30 lbs in just over 6 weeks after First Steps to Success.  It wasn't because she changed the way she ate or dieted she went through a Root pulling out exercise and released junk in her trunk. Her words, "My heart, shoulders, and chest feel so much lighter now."

Jessica * after years of suffering with Fibromyalgia, hospitalizing Migraines, and disability left one of these seminars completely PAIN FREE. It has been 6 months and she has not had one Fibromyalgia symptom.

There is a Biblical Proverb that says:

A PEACEFUL HEART MAKES A HEALTHY BODY

As a health practitioner I can tell you that this is true.  Your authentic self needs a peaceful heart, and a body that has released past hurts.

For some of you it may require a heart transplant, but believe me I have personally experienced and have seen hundreds of individuals from the worst possible circumstances and past be set free to be their Authentic Selves AND YOU CAN TOO!

We publish newsletters and blogposts twice a week for our readers for general education purposes only. We cover topics that are related to achieving and maintaining total wellness which includes our emotional, physical, spiritual and financial health.

Self Care for Health Part I : Strife and Worry lead to dis-ease

By | Fibromyalgia, Total Wellness | 2 Comments

At 36 years old I have spent many of those years striving in my life.  The definition of strife is to struggle or fight forcibly for something.  My strife began when I was 9 years old practicing piano 3 plus hours a day to get ready for this competition or this Program.  Then I was always struggling to achieve in school and work. I remember going to Chiropractic College where you were in school 40 plus hours, studying another 30 plus hours but yet I accepted a part time position at the American Red Cross as their Interim Health and Safety Director.  What was I thinking?

Strife fell over into my career, marriage and relationships.  I really thought you had to do all this to have success in life.

It wasn't fun, my adrenaline (the stress hormone) was running all the time. This caused weight gain, allergies, exhaustion and just about a nervous breakdown. Luckily I was in the natural health field and could keep myself from total body system failure.  But for many years no matter how much I worked and struggled I was financially and relationally going down hill.

In 2007 right about when I was ready to give it all up I found something that helped me recover, get into balance, and learn to be successful without strife.   Now I still fall out of balance some of the time, but my health, relationships, marriage, career, finances, and life is soooo much better. I am a extremely blessed woman from some simple things I found in 2007.  I hope these simple secrets can bless you too.

    Sincerely;

    Dr. Mary Starr Carter

Self Care Part I:  Strife and Worry lead to disease

I believe many women are striving in their lives because of pressure they put on themselves to be as good as, or to do the most, or to be the best.

It is this striving that many times leads to dis-ease….  In fact this kind of stress has been scientifically proven to result in heart disease, cancer, and a variety of other illnesses.    And my personal opinion is that some of the Fibromyalgia cases I see are due to years of strife and struggle.

Worry is in the same category.  Women especially worry about their children, bosses, finances, and the list goes on.  We even forward worry about things that haven't even happened yet.

Now I don't live with your problems and life so to tell you to STOP WORRYING may seem like I am being a jerk.  But I can tell you what the best success book written says about worry.

    Matthew 6:27-29
Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

    Proverbs 12:25
    Worry weighs a person down;

    Philippians 4:6-7
Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

So the bible may not be your thing but here is an example of a client who spent years in dis-ease until she got it.

Strife and Worry lead to dis-ease

Lynn * shared with me just recently a revelation she had after battling painful Shingles on and off for the past several years. She found that during periods of high stress and worry she would break out in painful and obvious shingles on her face and neck.

She had been praying and pouring her heart out to God and realized it wasn't the stress that caused the Shingles but the stress and false burden she put on herself. She kept striving to do as much as she could do with her time and talents. She spent years seeking God looking for what He wanted her to do.

When the revelation came that He (God) had planted in her heart the desire to be a wife and home-maker and that is really all she wanted to do.    That she didn't have to keep the cleanest house, to constantly be working and doing, she realized that just being was okay with her and God.

    THE DESIRE REVEALS THE DESIGN

When you can connect to your passions, desires and what truly makes you happy many times you can find your design. Some stay at home wives like Lynn feel like they should get a part time job or do something else to "stay busy".  When Lynn realized what her true God given Design was ….she became much happier and healthier woman.

I am here to tell you it is okay to be what you desire to be.  If your parents and others have put you down, or lead you down a path you don't want to be think about a different path. A path that makes your heart sing!

What are your desires and passions?  What makes you happy?

Sometimes it can be challenging to find out what our desires and passions are because their is so much junk in the way.

Part II of Self Care for Health we will share secrets to get the Junk out of the Trunk and find your authentic self.

    Ouch That Hurts

    By | Newsletter | 3 Comments

I have been in pain this past week after pulling some muscles in my shoulder blade.  As the mother of a 1 year old healing this injury is not easy when you are picking up your 24lb son dozens of times a day.  “Ouch that really does hurt.”  But I started to think of all my clients and those of you out there who are parents and in pain.  This is NOT FUN….

But now I am thinking of all the conditions my clients struggle with everyday, especially my Fibromyalgia Clients.

    Back Pain,

    Neck and Shoulder Pain,

    Joint stiffness,

    Headaches and Migraines

Dealing with pain without children is one thing but with children must be awful.  In fact, Heather Maidment who shares her story of recovering from Fibromyalgia at 2011-01-30_14-08-41_560.3gp   dealt with that very thing.  Can you imagine being in so much pain that it hurt if your children hugged or even touched you?  I can't.

My professional career has been spent treating and teaching people to get out of pain since 1999.  Yet it took me 3 days to remember to do that for myself.  Don't wait any longer. Try something that is simple and safe.  I used Deep Relief Roll on.  I rolled it on my neck and shoulder and the pain diminished by 60% in just 2 minutes.  A couple hours later I needed it again but this time it worked even better.  Compare this to my husband rubbing my shoulder for 20 minutes and the oils did much better.

At the Total Wellness Doc we offer many solutions that may reduce or eliminate your pain.   Here is a story that came in this week from Yanina Rivera who used Panaway essential oil.

These oils have me speechless…wow!   I forgot this was part of my Young Living Essentials everyday oils… I used it on my arthritic ankles (horrible flare up this weekend) and unexplainable swollen red bump on between knee and ankle… swelling went down, improved circulation and pain. Satisfied customer once again.

When I was first learning and experimenting with Therapeutic Essential oils I had a Landlord come to me with terrible knee pain.  He told me he had been taking Celebrex for over 6 months and it was really “tearing up”  his stomach.   So I asked him if I could try the Panaway oil.  I applied 6-10 drops all on the knee and then behind the knee, and down the leg.  A month later I got an email from my landlord telling me he has been out of knee pain since that day and he got rid of his Celebrex and his stomach was doing much better.

    Research and Safety

Thousands of dollars have been poured into research of the develop and quality preparation of these essential oil  blends.  Although more costly that an aspirin the benefits and safety are worth it!  Both Panaway and Deep Relief  essential oil blends are great to keep in your arsenal of health products.  I'd even suggest to keep them on you or near by.

If you struggle with pain every day these blends are safe to use daily. We know many pain drugs when used long term have damaging or addictive side effects.  Even over the counter Tylenol, Aspirin and Ibuprofen have been shown to  stress or damage the liver, kidneys or stomach with daily use.  Hundreds of our clients have used these oils with no side effects because they are safe.

How do you use Deep Relief or Panaway:

Deep Relief comes in a Roll on so you can simply roll on the area of pain and rub in with your hands or not.   The oil will absorb into the skin within a minute or two.

Panaway can be applied straight or put into a base of pure vegetable or olive oil and rubbed into the area of pain.

With both oils You will start to feel the deep penetrating tingly action which can last up to 30 minutes.  Even after the cooling sensation is gone many times the pain levels will remain decreased.

I suggest you combine the oils with a light massage, Chiropractic or if you are getting any other from of therapy.  The combination should enhance your results.

If you would like to try Panaway or Deep Relief visit www.orderoils.com or call our office directly at 315-883-1943.  Good luck and let us know your stories of getting out of pain in our comment section below or post it on Facebook at   Mary Starr Parmley Carter  .

    Thank you,

    Dr. Mary Starr

One Woman’s Journey from 310 lbs to 130 lbs

    By | Newsletter | 2 Comments
Gastroplasty including lap band surgery or stomach stapling is a restrictive operation for weight control.  Both a band and staples are used to create a small stomach pouch so you physically can not eat large quantities at a time and it slows down the passage of food.

Here is part of one women's journey of 180lb weight release with this.

    Interview with Karen Twomey
In 1987 a 310lb Karen Twomey had stomach stapling and released 110lbs in a year. In the next 21 years she would release a total of 180lbs. In the 24 years since the surgery Karen has been through more than most would want in their life. Including divorce and care-taking for her second husband until his death.

“At first I used the Stomach stappling as a tool to release the bulk of my weight. It's been 24 year long journey and I have learned a lot about myself through the journey.   At first  I used exercise to keep the weight off.  Later I started lifting weights to lift my husband when I was caring for him when he was ill. After many years on this journey I realized that weight lifting and exercise are keys for keeping off the weight but also other things.” Today Karen says she also uses good outlook, no dieting just common sense to maintain her weight.

What would you say to someone who was considering stomach stapling, gastric bypass, lapband surgery?

“50% of of people who get gastroplasty succeed. That means 1 out of 2 are failing. That is a big number.“ Even though gastroplasty creates a physical limitation allowing the recipient to eat only a small amount at a time. Karen says, “ People find a way around the limitation and can gain back the weight.” Finding out what her eating triggers were    was a key to Karen's success.

    Understanding Why you Eat
Karen says; “I learned what triggers me and what I can do to stop a trigger. I was an emotional eater not a food addict there are definitely two differences. I remember I had a friend who passed  and I went out and bought all the foods I used to eat. Sweet, salt for comfort. Then I looked and realized I was trying to fill the pain. This was the first time I realized I was an emotional eater.”

    One Addiction for another
For me exercise became an addiction until I would find balance in it.  Karen is right many gastoplasty patients transfer their food addiction to something else.

October 24th 2006 episode of Oprah Winfrey showed 30% of this addiction transfer to alcohol.   This is why it is so important to find root causes of our food addiction. At www.thetotalwellnessdoc.com we are committed to helping you find root causes.

    Support Groups
When you are off track you slip into old patterns. Patients are now told prior to surgery that gastroplasty is just tool. That diet, exercise and lifestyle changes are the key to success but Karen highly recommends those who have this procedure to be in a local gastroplasty support group for at least 6 years.   Support groups have helped Karen and 24 years later she still attends meetings.

    Determination
Karen was determined she would not fail. She had baby and says for her, “it was life or death.” I believe it is that determination that encouraged her to not give up, to learn about herself, and solutions for wellness. She is an example to any of us who are on the path to better health through her constantly learning and growing.

“It has been a journey. Every year I am learning more about myself and my relationship with food. To make it a healthy one not a destructive one. Food is something we need to exist. You have to maintain a good relationship with food.”

    Do you have Food Coma?

    By | Newsletter | 2 Comments

I am writing this Blog a little groggy still from my nap. It is St Patrick's day and I made Corned Beef Potatoes, Cabbage and Carrots with Rye bread. We don't do a lot of starches during the week and about 30 minutes after I ate I started to feel a little tired. It overcame me and I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer I was asleep on the couch within 10 minutes. I knew this would be the consequences of eating that meal and splurging on three pieces of bread. This rapid sleepiness after a meal is what I called "Food Coma".

What is "food coma"? I guess the correct term is postprandial somnolence (post eating sleepiness). My grandfather has had this condition ever since I can remember. After having dinner every night he goes in the living room and is asleep in his chair within 15 minutes.

What causes "food coma"?  When we eat the digestive process turns up our parasympathetic nervous system and turn down our sympathetic nervous system.
A simple way to understand these two systems :
-Parasympathetic let's you relax and digest your food
-Sympathetic also called fight or flight let's you move quick and deal with stress.

"Food coma" also happens when the body spikes it's blood sugar or insulin levels and results in a bunch of brain hormones like melatonin also called the sleepy hormone and serotonin the happy hormone to be made. This brain chemistry change may be responsible for some food addictions which we will address in another article.

    How to avoid Food Coma?

    1. Eat smaller portions . The larger the amount of food we eat at one time the stronger the parasympathetic response. This is why holiday meals where we usually over eat leaves us sleepy. Also if you are someone who only eats one meal a day and then falls asleep in front of the TV … that is FOOD COMA too. It can lead to some bad health problems down the road.
    2. Eat regularly (every 3-4 hrs) from your morning meal to your evening meal. This pattern will help maintain even insulin levels and has been proven to help release weight especially around the middle.

    3. Eat protein or full fats instead of refined carbs, breads and sugars. No more donuts or bagels for meals. Choices like a seeds, a delicious protein shake like Pure Protein would be a better choice for a meal. This maintains your energy until your next meal or snack.

    4. Use NingXia Red as a snack to keep blood sugar even. A fruit juice that naturally has protein and minerals in it . This drink can help decrease your cravings for the sweet or carbohydrate snacks. In fact Sally Sims says, “NingXia Red helped me release 70 lbs. I would drink 1 oz 3 times a day instead of my snacks.” To hear more of Sally's story go to this tele-class her story is at the end.

    5. Use Carbozyme . If you are going to eat breads, pizza, refined carbs, sugars use the digestive enzyme Carbozyme. It is not a carb blocker but rather a digestive enzyme that helps your body deal with the harshness of those foods.  Clients love to have Carbozyme with them when eating out at Buffet or Family Style restaurants like Maggiano's.  "I don't feel so stuffed and in pain if I overeat at my favorite restaurants" Jay Carter

So now you know a little bit more about what I call "Food Coma" and why you might get tired after a meal or snack. I encourage you to take some action to stop it because continuous spiking of blood sugars and the resulting hormone havoc not only lead to diabetes but also gaining weight around the middle.

    Understanding Fibromyalgia

    By | Newsletter | 9 Comments

I remember when I saw Fibromyalgia for the first time. I mean really saw it. It was 1999  I was still in Chiropractic school and a class mates wife had been diagnosed. I remember how exhausted he looked everyday. He would share, “my wife had a good night last night” or “my wife had a bad night last night.” I remember that they had to move where they lived because she was losing the ability to do stairs, and was extremely sensitive to mold and mildew. He ended up failing several classes and I am not sure he even got his degree. This was the first time I realized the impact Fibromyalgia had on the entire family.

About a year later I met Mary Moeller the author of Fibromyalgia Cookbook; A Daily Guide to Becoming Healthy Again and other articles and books of overcoming Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue.   This two hour lecture would change my life.

For weeks I talked to anyone who would listen about what I had learned. Through her training I learned about  yeast and Candida and the effects on our health. I reported some of this information in an essay I wrote for one of our nutrition classes but sadly it would be about another 5 years before the professor would come into agreement with this information. This was the first lesson that even in Alternative, Nutritional and Holistic Health Care practitioners can be years behind scientific and clinical research.

In 2001 I began training with a pioneer in natural health and the nutrition field and would soon find that most of what I would learn would take even the Holistic Practitioners about 2-4 years to begin using these things. It was at these cutting edge trainings where I would begin to meet more and more individuals healed from Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia.

From 2003- 2006 I began to see a large number of cases of Fibromyalgia at our Wellness Center.  We utilized some of the cutting edge therapies and treatments I had learned about.  The results were promising but disappointing. Clients would get 30-60% improvement in their symptoms, but if they stopped coming many times we would have to start all over. I didn't know then that I was missing a piece of the puzzle.

I worked harder and harder giving my patients everything I had until my health started to be affected  Not unlike many practitioners I was not caring for my body as I needed to. But this lessons would  give me an understanding how ones health could deteriorate without you really noticing.

In 2007 my eyes became open to a missing piece of the puzzle.  It was a HUGE piece that I thought I had before but didn't. I began to incorporate this missing piece of the puzzle in 2008 and WOW did I start seeing healing after healing after healing. My practice soon evolved and I started working with clients from all over the world through phone consultation. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome clients have been the majority of my clients for the past 5 years.

In 2010 I had a God appointed health challenge that would again give me great compassion for my clients and lead me to find another missing piece of the puzzle for them and me.

I know that I know that I know there are answers for those suffering. Here is a message I would like to share with you from a woman who has recovered from the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Lupus and much more. It is my gift to you that you too may learn some missing pieces of the puzzle for your health.

    Fibromyalgia Seriously

By | Newsletter | One Comment

Fibromyalgia Pain is a complex and unique problem with 100 or more different solutions. That is right– I said solutions. Maybe you are thinking I have tried everything; you don’t know what you are talking about Dr. Starr, there is no solution for my pain. I just have to live with it.

Well I would kindly like to disagree. In the almost 15 years of working in the health industry and meeting thousands of people in pain and hundreds with the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, I have seen and continue to see more and more people break free of this diagnosis FIBROMYALGIA.

Maybe you have heard these horrific words from your doctor; “It is all in your head”, “You need to seek psychiatric help.” “I am putting you on an anti-depressant.” WRONG. WRONG. WRONG.

Fibromyalgia pain is real and serious.

Why do Doctors write off this condition? I believe the reason is because it is a very difficult and challenging puzzle to solve that usually needs different and holistic approaches versus pharmaceutical drugs.

If you had a mechanical problem with your Porsche would you go to Cole Muffler or Wal-Mart to get it fixed? No, you would go to a shop that specializes in fixing your Porsche. Many times we go to a General M.D. or a specialist that may not be skilled in treating your condition. Don’t get me wrong, we need Physicians but they are not God. They have limitations in their knowledge and skill. One doctor said “I hope my patients get mad that there aren’t any traditional medical solutions, which they will go out and seek better ways of getting health!”

How can you find help with your condition?

    1. Know the Result you want. Is it to reduce your pain, to get off medications, to be pain free. Know the result you want before looking for help.

    2. Interview your specialist, whether it is a physician or natural health practitioner Here are a few questions to ask:

Out of all your clients what percentage of clients do you see that have fibromyalgia?

What percentage see ______________________ (the results you want to see).

How long does it take the average client to see __________ results?

At The Total Wellness Doc 65% of our clients have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and 90% of the rest of our clients have fibromyalgia type symptoms like joint pain.

Out of those who follow directions 100% get some sort of result including reduced pain, no pain, reduced medications, active lifestyle again, improved moods, weight loss, improved sleep and the list goes on.

    3. Now Follow Directions

Once you have decided to work with a practitioner follow the instructions. Those who follow instructions get better results, plain and simple. Better yet those who follow instructions with a good attitude do even better.

If you need to drink a gallon of water then drink a gallon of water. If you need to reduce or eliminate your sugar, do it.

On a personal note I struggle myself with following directions. As I know most of you do. But when I follow my own health directions boy oh boy do I FEEL AMAZING! So I don’t know everything, all I know is if you want to improve your health then follow instructions.

    4. Be Consistent

Many nutritional changes, supplementation and therapeutic techniques will take time to start to make changes in your body. Give it at least 6 weeks before you make a decision. If you are still skeptical I encourage you to have an open mind and get results. Some of you will need a consistent 6 months to regain your health. Just don’t give up.

*Healing takes time, energy, and money*

Time: Understand that getting healthy does not happen overnight. Many of you took years to get in this condition and it will take years to fully recover.

Energy: Some days it is going to take all the energy and willpower you have to keep with it, whether it is preparing a special meal or getting the exercise in you need. It may mean letting go of some responsibilities or hobbies to devote to your health program.

Money: Getting healthy will have costs. Most reputable practitioners or products are not getting rich on you. But in the case of Fibromyalgia it will take an investment to get better. Set aside a health budget and understand if you choose to use natural medicine and nutrition that it will most likely not be covered by your insurance.

Out of all the sufferers reading this I know some of you will not want to take the time, energy, or money it takes to get better. Others will do partial programs or get on track for short periods of time. It is all okay. We are each individual and have the right to make choices.

At the Total Wellness Doc we don’t judge your commitment level. None of us is perfect nor do we want to be. But if you are ready to get healthy, make some strides in your health, then we are here to serve you.

We have a special gift worth $197. A 4 part audio series and Action Guide about Fibromyalgia and how to affectively deal with sleep, anxiety, pain, energy, and much much more. Plus if you are registered at www.thetotalwellnessdoc.com you will receive a bonus audio that will shock you. I am not going to tell you what it is yet. Stay tuned.
